  • The Kiev 4, a Russian rangefinder that is really just a Contax III with some Soviet skin.

Saying “Russian” just simplifies it, plus alliteration

I have a Kiev 4a, which is like the Kiev 4 but doesn't have a light meter. After a few decades the light meter tends to not work anyway. Of the Soviet rangefinders I own, it is my favorite. The build quality is far superior to a Fed or Zorki, especially considering that the Kiev has a metal shutter curtain, while they both have cloth curtains. These tend to age over time, and are a pain to fix.

Agreed! I would love to get a 4a that’s fully functional. My 4 works but struggles occasionally, plus the light meter sometimes works sometimes doesn’t so it’s not worth using in my opinion.

"Kyiv" cameras are not Russian. "Kyiv" is Soviet or Ukrainian.

Ukrainian rangefinder doesn’t roll off the tongue as well. Plus most Ex-USSR gets referred to as Russian. Pretty much titled it that way just to keep it simple to understand. Thanks for watching the video!

I just bought a Kiev 4 out of Japan dated 75 on both the body and the lens. Credibly claimed to be working and new enough so it is distinctly possible, but we will see. I never shot a Contax but did have a Leica lllg and a Russian Leica copy which was shockingly crude. Nikon based their early rangefinders on the Contax and the Nikon F showed that heritage in the shape of the body. What I didn’t know was the Contax was very serious competition for the Leica in the 30s and was arguably a better camera - certainly in some ways. My Grandfather had a Leica ll in the 30s but my grandmother gave the useless old thing away in 48 when he died. Along with all those stupid lenses he had wasted so much money on. Even at 6 years old I had a pang of regret that she had done that. Sigh. So in some ways I’m looking forward to experiencing the alternative to what my granddad did in 1936. I enjoyed your video because it was nice to see a young digital era photographer exploring the ancient world of film photography with a real classic camera.
