Unfortunately, too many people, especially college students, have been taught that you don't try to have a rational conversation with people you disagree with. They have been taught that you must shout them down to prevent them from expressing an opinion that you don't agree with. This is the reason there is such a large division between right and left in the USA because people don't even try to have rational discussions.
They are not being taught that. They are learning that shouting people down works through experience.

Just when everything seemed doomed, a bright youthful light shines through. Ever so often I ask myself why do our youth seem so displaced, angry, defiant, selfish entitled crybabies and was this how my elders felt about
me? Certainly not but probably so. It’s probably the availability of instant access to information making it seem like it’s a bigger issue than it is. As someone who more closely identifies as conservative, I think conservatives pride themselves on being the party of logic, so they've gotta be extra careful about not coming off as over-emotional.
