    Great work as always. Towards the end of the video you speak about PAs not being able to reach the level of consultants and if this were allowed to happen, many doctors would be understandably upset. I concur with these sentiments and would indeed feel a little betrayed.
    Might I ask what are your thoughts on MBChB apprenticeships where students are paid to learn whilst on the job, so to speak.
    It feels rather dismissive of all the stress and student debt accrued for those of us who went through med school. What was it all for?

      I think the PA career progression issue is going to be a horrendously difficult circle for the GMC/Royal Colleges to try and square. Someone is going to be p*ssed off no matter what you do, especially as training numbers get squeezed further and further.
      I honestly don't know re the apprenticeships. It's one of those things that sounds good in theory, although I don't understand how it's supposed to work, and I'm very worried about these more widening-participation students getting saddled with either a second-class medical degree or being shackled to the NHS in some other way. I just don't trust HEE or the government as far as I can throw them in that regard. A captive workforce is much more valuable to them.

    I'm guessing by total this can mean almost 12 years of all the progress. In other European countries its half of the years around 6 and 4 years at US.
    Does 12 years of training mean you essencially become better doctors than those who did their internal years outside UK?
    Are many UK medical students unhappy and thinking about going outside for residency programme in other countries?

      It's certainly a peculiarity. UK postgraduate medical training is up there with the longest in the world. I think part of this is an increased amount of time doing general medicine (and there's been more of a drive towards that especially recently, given that I imagine it's more efficient and cheaper to not have to consult to other depts for everything). Becoming more common for people to look at doing residency outside the UK now. Indeed I know multiple UK registrars (residents) that have left training here and gone to the US because they would STILL be attendings faster.

    Hi, I was wondering if you could talk more about the jump from receiving your CCT to becoming a consultant? I just assumed as soon as you finish ST8 you just immediately become a consultant?

    • @OllieBurtonMed
      @OllieBurtonMed  Рік тому

      Unfortunately not, you become eligible for a consultant job after ST8, in theory. Actually getting that job is then a competitive process again - and increasingly for some specialties demands PhDs, Fellowships etc on top of finishing training.

    About international students who get to become GP or go through a speciality path : would their diploma and qualification have the same weight as native ones , through the United Kingdom and abroad ????
    (Flexibility and resilience my friend)

    • @OllieBurtonMed
      @OllieBurtonMed  Рік тому

      Yes your medical qualification (as long as PLAB etc done) is treated the same as a UK medical qualification.

    there are conversion courses into medicine

    • @OllieBurtonMed
      @OllieBurtonMed  Рік тому

      There are, but few and far between. GEM represents the most common pathway, there is a Scottish one intended for AHPs I believe. I could see a PA to Physician course being developed as a two year programme top-up to the PA programme and I don't think many medics would likely have an issue with that.

    Hi olie ! Would kind enough to explain the speciality subject of medicine where i do not need to work as med reg

    • @OllieBurtonMed
      @OllieBurtonMed  Рік тому

      Group 1 specialties are those that have continued med reg requirement as you dual CCT in specialty and general internal medicine. Group 2 doesn't.
