I battled with addiction from 18-26 im 27 now and just over a year sober. I lost my self & wasted my early 20s chasing a high I loved but realized the high didn’t love me back. Love this song. Was an alcoholic off and on. Meaning I would stop for 6 months then stop again for 3 yrs. Guess I still am but haven't had a drink in a yr. I did lose my family of 4 kids for bout 2 weeks, then we gave it to God and I haven't wanted a drink at all. It's hard when everyone around me still drinks. I don't ask anyone to not drink around me, I was a messy drunk and no one should have to stop cause of me. I still go to bars just drink water and continue being the funny me sober. Realized I am still the star of the show just sober and I remember everything now. Back in the gym and gaining muscle back and losing the whisky belly and red swollen face. I am here with everyone who is battling addiction. It's hard but find a reason to not drink. My family was my reason. I love them more than drinking.

I just got sober just under 3 months ago, and a month into my sober time was my 24th birthday, if I would’ve kept onto that bender for that whole month beforehand I wouldn’t have made it past 23. I’m so grateful, and I love country but never heard this song. It really struck a chord with me. If you’re struggling reach out to someone. We care, we get it. I lost my DaD in January He was 85.😢He was probably an alcoholic, but retired military and had an amazing career with the Phone company. He NEVER DRANK AND DROVE. Sometimes he went months with no alcohol. COULDN'T BELIEVE THE CONTROL HE HAD. Even if he got falling down drunk, the night before, in his 40s and 50s He would sober up, take a shower and go to his manager job without missing a beat. I'm pretty sure the jab he was convinced he needed by his soon to be exposed physician was the reason for his stroke and ultimate demise. He had been golfing weekly for years. It's not always the alcohol that kills folks! Washington State senior citizens BEWARE....

i don't even think you have the slightest idea about what you just said. The fact that you recognize the mistakes you have made is one thing. The fact that you "damaged her deeply, made her a completely different person" is another. You're taking ownership and recognizing the consequences of your actions. That's major!! I deal with many people with addiction issues. I am addicted to soda and chocolate. That may sound stupid but I cannot stop. I can only try to imagine being addicted to something that has a stronger hold on you.
I believe you have one of the greatest chances of survival than many others because of the insightfulness you have exhibited. As a nurse, I cared for a 23 year old alcoholic who died due to the damage he did to his pancreas from chronic pancreatitis as a result of alcohol abuse. Believe in yourself; you can do it.

Sorry for the delay in response. I am a nurse and encounter many people in varying situations similar to what you describe. When I was a kid I thought it was "cool" to smoke so I tried. When I found myself "getting the urge for one" I knew I needed to stop. It was snowing outside and I didn't want to let it control me. My father was an alcoholic who physically abused my mother and brother, fist, police, the whole 9 yards. It had devastating consequences on my life.
Please don't be insulted by this. I am addicted to chocolate and Pepsi, as a result have a weight issue. I cannot stop. This song helped me realize, OMG, I have a problem. This isn't just a craving, it's a darn addiction. I cannot begin to imagine what others go through in situations where the monster wants to consume you. The urge, the temptation to "just have one" knowing full well it will start all over again.
I am making a conscious effort to change my ways, although I have failed so many times. I cannot stand to look at myself. It's embarrassing. I guess it depends on how badly we want it. Please be sure to distance yourself from anyone who would put you in a situation to fail. If they do, they are not your friends!!!!@@theonlyDB

@@donnathompson1619 thats the difference in you and I, I never once took or done any drug because i thought it was "cool". first drug i ever did was hydrocodone syrup that was prescribed at 14 years old. when i felt the intense motivation and confidence i was instantly interested in any other chemcals thqat could alter my state of mind. opioids ended up being the main because i was severly antisocial and had social anxiety and it basically cured it. so i just got to learn to live life how it waas meant to be without that. psychiatrist said i was depressed and had bipolar before using which is what lead to my addiction. im on antidepressants and bipolor and anxiety medication now and im sober right now and feel srt of "normal" one day at a time

Simple as my mama said when I was very young

My uncle taught me how to drink
Well, I went California and I had me a band
And we played in all the bars in all the southern lands
We played all night, and we drank for free
All of my boys and me
Now I'm 23 and there ain't nobody who can drink like me
Soon I'll be 24 and the Lord knows that I can't drink no more
I know I shoulda taken it slow
It's not the way that my life goes
    Now I know
When you're passed out on the floor
    You're sober by 24
Well, I had a girl who loved me the whole damn time
And I'd drink my whiskey and she'd drink wine
But soon my bottle was too much to comfort me
Yeah, we'd sit on the river and we'd fish all day
And we'd drive across the country, let the radio play
Seven damn years, I never thought she'd leave
Now I'm 23 and there ain't nobody who can drink like me
Soon I'll be 24 and the Lord knows that I can't drink no more

Growing up I had an abusive, alcholic father, and being the first born, he treated me like a son. He was hard on me, gave that tough love men always love to dish out. Being an adult now, having my own alcoholism, I can see his pain and why he would lash out. It wasn't anything I did, but this song really hits home for me. The way that he says momma don't look at me, is exactly how my father feels. I know because that's how I feel. The shame and humilation is something you deal with daily, and hearing these words are so eye opening. Cause life is not worth living that way. I love the rawness of this because it could fit SO many of life's difficult circumstances.

By the end I was singing along with the tune, humming the melody. I'm 23...and have been battling bad Lyme for about 7 years. A whole lot of it I've been mopey and sad and blamey. To all the young blokes including myself im 23 turning 24.
If you yourself are having a few "drinks" but its every afternoon you have a problem, if you struggle to stop and keep drinking after just a few drinks you have a problem. If having a few drinks afterwork everyday is your normal because it helps you relax you have a problem.
Im just getting out of it, 12+ drinks every night since i was 16 maybe 6 months of somewhere in-between.
It takes alot to admit it and it takes a hell of alot more to stop it.
I just hope some blokes come to the realisation oneday that what they are doing will and does affect them.
Its not a matter of if it will happen, its a matter of when it will happen.
Imagine being 24 years old and you have liver cancer failing kidneys etc from drinking, imagine one of your mates refusing to stay at yours and driving home one night after a long shift, & all of a sudden you have to explain to the police and the courts how he only had a few drinks & why it couldnt have possibly been the cause of multiple people possibly being dead.
Drinking does us no favours, we should only be drinking on very rare occasions. In memory of somone a wedding someones significant milestone aka 20-30-40th bday etc.

By the time he was 20 he was fighting everyone. One mother's day I got an early morning drunk call from jail. After that he started turning his life around. Now he doesn't drink at all.
