Polly very informative video, I work in a ED program at a high school and I think we over accommodated to the point of no return. Behavior therapist has great coping plans etc.. but they still continue to come back after they calmed down and get themselves going again and this is mostly our seniors which is mind boggling to me and above my pay grade. Every day it's always something in our classroom and it's never about school work. And we have a major distractions with the cell phones! But a plan is being put in place to hopefully put up cellphones up in mornings and they get them at end of the day. Thanks for letting me semi vent! 😊 Be safe! 🙏🏿

      Mr. Rodney ,
The moral to what I have to say about that is to not over accommodate from the start .
Plus , a student does not need a cell phone to distract . Take it from me as a former autistic SPED school student .
If students using cell phones is your major distraction then avoid those kinds of distractions by doing something about it from the start .
I did not use a cell phone to distract . In fact , I distracted by talking out and driving everyone else off task , really to drive the teacher / instructor themselves off when their lesson or whatever else they are doing or having me do is going downhill with me and I get frustrated and I feel like scooting out the jokes or whatever .

In your classroom, you're correct, its never about classwork. That's why they are accessing your room. The "coping plans" are probably focusing on what to do in the reactive moment. Your focus is on teaching interventions so the kids can cope without needing so many accommodations or reactive managements.
As far as cell phones, it's the refusal to not use it when its a classroom expectation, not actually the cell phone itself. If it wasn't the phone it would be something else!
BTW...semi and even full venting is good... It helps us think about new ways to do things! While you are working from a distance, focus less on them getting work done, and more on making that regular emotional connection, that's the stuff that helps build willingness and that's the stuff they will remember:)

@@Polly-Bath Thanks Polly! I always value your opinion especially after your excellent training I attended for Paraprofessionals years ago. 😊👍🏿

You are welcome! I think there will be many strong feelings to address in the future of school and all kids will benefit from our guidance in using tools to help.

How can kids re regulate when they are dysregulated? They have to centre themselves and come back to the present. They cant do that doing nothing. Chewing, or doing something sensory has been known to bring kids back to the present moment. The kids l support, cant sit. They either hit or run out the class.
