Randy Bachman started this group after leaving The Guess Who. I grew up listening to both too. I saw BTO in concert when they were first starting. Excellent band.
Fred Turner, lead vocals and bass......both are a standout on this great highway drivin' tune. I don't believe Fred is active in music these days, but it was not that long ago that he and Randy got together on tour as Bachman Turner. And yes, he still had that gravelly rockin' great voice.
They are from my home town, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They are touring in the USA right now. The Guess Who and Neil Young are also from Winnipeg. Neil Young spent his teenage years growing up in Winnipeg where he started his first band called The Squires.
"Roll On Down The Highway" is a song written by Fred Turner and Robbie Bachman, first recorded by Canadian rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) for their 1974 album Not Fragile. The lead vocal is provided by Turner. Turner and Randy Bachman had originally been contracted by Ford to write a song for the automotive company's commercials, but Ford never picked up any of their compositions. Robbie Bachman later helped develop one of Turner's ideas into a Top 20 hit. "Roll on Down the Highway" peaked at No. 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on March 1, 1975. It hit 22 on the U.K. charts.
From the 1974 album, "Not Fragile", this is such a great tune, from the opening guitar riff, this has catchy pop appeal and definitely a great driving song from BTO.🇨🇦 Randy's lead guitar solo, fantastic full vocals, the driving bass line, the pounding drum beat, and the strong guitar hook in the chorus and for you Harri, cowbells, all make this a massive rock tune. 🎶🎶🎶 Funny enough it was written for a Ford car commercial but was rejected, the rest is history for BTO. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Miss Blondie. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Hi Mary It would have a perfect song for Ford or Chevy especially as it was in the Muscle Car Era vroom Love and Rock Music to you my Canadian Rocker Chick friend 🎶💜🎵🤘🇨🇦🇺🇲🥂🎸🥁
@missblondie2393 Hello my groovy Chick friend. Great request. Of course I have loved BTO forever. 🥁🎸🇨🇦 I'm thinking an F150 tearing up the highway, groovin along. Lol Love and Rock and Roll, my hippy friend from the South. 🎶🎶💎💎🎸🎸🇨🇦❤️🇺🇲🥰🥰🤗🤗

Brings back memories---Headed to the city for a concert, windows down in the '70 Chevelle, flip BTO into the 8-track and left lane all the way up the interstate. Hit the coliseum wide open with waist-long hair stickin' out of your head like you had licked a light socket.
I don’t remember anything in particular that might have been playing back then when I got a ticket, but imagine your a teenager out with your friends or on a date, just driving around town with the radio blaring! Harri - it wasn’t just one or two songs like this that rocked, the airwaves were full of great hard-driving music in the 70s!
Agree Randy Bachman is an often overlooked top tier guitar player The whole band is great all the Bachman Brothers and The Incredible Fred Turner on lead vocals and Bass 🎶🤘🎵
The first Canadian band I fell in love with. Of course many other Canadian band became the same way but BTO was my first. A smokin tune. Nice pick Miss Blondie. Thanks Harri. 🤟🤟🤟
BTO are/were a GREAT rock band. They have a huge catalogue: Lookin' Out For Number One, Let It Ride, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, Takin' Care Of Business!
Harri - as someone who moved from Toronto to a few places in the country as an adult, including the prairies (where BTO is from, they're from Winnipeg specifically), we NEED music like this to stay awake while driving. You could drive for 12 hrs on the prairies and look down to make sure you actually hit the gas pedal. Driving for 2 full days with the same scenery, one is apt to get a bit sleepy. The Guess Who, of which Randy Bachman is a co-founder, and BTO (Bachman founded that group) both toured a lot by road. I don't think it was founded on the working class rocker vibe they have as much as a necessary "we gotta stay awake on the road" vibe! 😂 Love this song and BTO. I hope someone will finally request Blue Collar, my favourite of all their songs. Great jazzy vibe!
One of my favorite driving songs! I remember when it came out! Can’t stay still when you hear this great BTO song! I didn’t get a ticket while driving but probably should have!😂
In my car playlist LOUD, driving 120, then suddenly you are at 140, down the QEII highway! Thanks Blondie from Alberta 🇨🇦 ❤❤❤❤ (QEII is Queen Elizabeth II highway) PS Beers in the truck were called road pops back in the day!

Brings back the days in my 1972 Mustang 351HO, basically a Boss 351 with lower compression that I got up to 155 MPH with a 455 HO Trans Am in Alberta long ago, we slowed down, gave each other a thumbs up because neither won but both had fun.... then onto our destinations....
I am Canadian. I saw BTO in the Ottawa civic center. People were all stomping the arena seats sections so hard and in perfect unison they were actually bouncing. I felt it. They don't make me think of the Stones. To Me they are like the Canadian AC/DC. I bet Angus likes them. Hehe.
had a helmet w/ headset built in, got pulled over for doing 110 mph on my bike with this cranking - cop asked where i got the helmet, tried it on, heard what i was listening to and let me off with a warning saying try something a little mellower next time ...
You really can’t go wrong with BTO, as long as you have cruise control. I will tell you that on I-80 in Nebraska way back when, I found out my brothers Studebaker could top out the speedometer in about seven miles with BTO blasting on the 8 track. And the speedometer went to 120 with the car still accelerating when I had to slow down for my exit. Proving God watches out for fools I had no mechanical issues while doing it nor did I see a trooper.
Damn! We're both lucky although I didn't get my license till 86 I always loved Rock from the 60s and 70s Flirting With Disaster by Molly Hatchet had my dad's old Buick Electra "deuce and a quarter" 455 engine The Batmobile up to nearly 120 and thankfully no ticket 🎶🤘🎵
Wonderful selection Miss Blondie. Until this moment I did not know that BTO was Canadian. I’m constantly amazed at how much great music has come from our northern neighbor. Love this toe tapper and enjoyed Harri’s input. Thanks Miss Blondie. 🌺✌️
These boys were from Winnipeg. Anywhere outside the city are endless flat, straight, empty roads and its a long way to anywhere. To get somewhere you have to do some lengthy high speed driving.
If you youngins want to know what the definition of rock and roll is? This isit. If I ever get pulled over by the police for speeding my defense would be I was listening to roll on down the highway by bto and I lost control of the car. He would probably understand and give me a warning.
This song kicks ass, kicking ass since I first heard it in 1974.

Mid- 70's Rock & Roll! BTO, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullett Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Joe Walsh...lots of great, hard-driving R&R! Great pick!

Missed BTO graduated H.S. in '73. Went to college.
Last time I got pulled over for speeding, I had BTO blasting. Though I think it was “Let It Ride”. 😂
And it was since Covid.
I got stopped but sweet talked my way out of it. The officer loved BTO too!!!
