How to Play Shoto Todoroki in Dungeons & Dragons (My Hero Academia Build)

- Today we're building Shoto Todoroki from My Hero Academia in D&D 5e! Armed with fire, ice, and methods to make fire and ice hit harder, this is a great build for someone who likes throwing out massive waves of damage. Also, we finally have a poll for Jojo's characters on this video, make sure to vote for that!

"I promise not to make any jokes that are dumb and obvious"
Our lie detector test determined that that was a false statement.
Total fiction. Dumb and obvious jokes are the salt to flavor these videos.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 It was invented by a writer. :D
Nay. 20 on detect motives
Little does anyone know UA was actually Unearthed arcana all along!
Dun dun dun!
He to dangerous to be left alive
omg lol
I thought UA was Umbrella Academy
The truth was in front of us the whole time! We were just to blind to see it!
His skillset is more ice at the beggining and gets more even as he levels up. Reflects his character development
Ah yes, Shoto's greatest move....
Grease
I see him more as a fire genasi/ice draconic bloodline sorcerer. You have the red skin on part of him and the icy scales on other parts of him.
I was leaning more sorcerer too.
I was as well but as I was thinking about it, one of the hallmarks of a Wizard is that they study relentlessly to learn and improve. Todoroki's been training since he was like 4. However, I do agree with a fire genasi/ice dragon mix, so maybe if your dm will let you homebrew?
@@MattHaku39 I get that, but nothing says a Sorcerer can't practice.
I suppose it's the whole "the power comes from understanding external forces" aspect of the wizard that gives me pause here. I mean, you can fudge the flavor and just use game mechanics and that is fine. But just finding the best conceptual fit, his powers are innate, inherited from two supernatural powers. That screams Sorc to me. He also doesn't "forget" his powers, so needing to study for a night to simply to activate his quirk would feel weird to me. Sorc's can still train, learn from a master, etc- the exact method of learning spells is kept vague from a lore point because there's a lot of variance in the class' background.
@@NeoConker626 yeah now that you mention it, that does make sense. I think you could make a case either way. He probably just went wizard since with Sorcerer you gotta pick ice or fire and especially currently, Todoroki's definitely halfsies. I would like to see a sorcerer build with Todoroki tho.... some fun meta metamagic options in there
You can make a disfigured character, you know.
I made a Red Dragon Ancestry Sorcerer with my White Dragon Heritage Dragonborn and it feels just as good XD
Alexandre Leal Pires Junior wouldn’t that just make you a pink dragon?
YESSSSSSS
Ok, honestly this is one of my favorite things you've done
Honestly, I'm so heccin into My Hero, I'm so glad I decided to do a build for it.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 honestly, now I wanna see you make Tokoyami as shadow sorcerer. That level 6 feature is perfect for Dark Shadow
(Though the whole class would fit in better with raven from teen titans 😅)
@Joeseph Moore But you can't smite with unarmed strikes. It's dumb like that
BEST BOIIIIIIIII
Every anime character can jump 20 feet straight up, and they never explain it.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 That one time Dio and Jotaro flew but they actually explained it. (Yes I know that later a kid jumped 20 feet in the air during rock paper scissors but shhh)
I never thought of a wizard/monk multiclass
The new UA Artificer, especially the Battle Smith subclass really reminds me of Steve? from Minecraft(no, really) You could change the terrain with Mold Earth and Stone Shape. You could have double proficiency with most artisan tools to craft almost anything your party could want. All this utility could justify a build that isn't that good at combat.
I've really gotta dive into that new Artificer. I think I'm just sad because I actually liked the old one (you can see I used it pretty frequently in older builds).
the Eberron artificer is good and a league legal character. it is still utility heavy but what people fail to remember is alchemy is used to make thunderstones acid & fire flasks. with the right class choices also holy water. was thinking tinker gnome with the Artillerist subclass you get to make turrets you can carry 1 to start then a second. also, the get firearm prof in any campaign dm approves of course but its a standard class feature. you get to add runs to wands/guns that add more damage to the spell/ammo in the item. alchemist subclass is a healer build but with all the tool prof you get you can craft any poison/potion/bomb like devise you want. especially with the spell storing item class feature usable 2x int mod.
If you continue dipping into My Hero Academia, I'd love to see deku, all-might, or bakugou
I would wait with deku since his power (s) are yet evolved
He has an all might build now.
You got your wish m8 lol
Episode 55 of the Fire Emblem stats: Shouto Todoroki.
Todoroki is a clear-cut reason user for the fire and ice magic. He's also good at brawling since he's surprisingly decent at hand-to-hand combat and he's also pretty good at heavy armor since he gives himself a suit of ice from time to time. He's bad at any other weapon since they burn or freeze in his hands.
His magic is his one great stat. His other stats are average.
I would have gone monk for my first level and after that focus on my wizard levels, just for the ac and martial arts.
Not a bad idea. I just wanted fire and ice as fast as possible!
OMG I've been waiting forever for jojo!! I'm hyped who ever wins the poll
If this video is any indication of how hungry this channel is for anime, its gonna be a big one. I'll make sure to do it justice.
I’d love to see you do an Erza build from Fairy Tail.
HyruleJose I am in agreement with this one, as well as Gray Fullbuster
HyruleJose, I agree. That would be awesome.
Jesse Lowe Gray Fullbuster is probably just the ice half of this, but also running around in nothing but boxers.
i've been meaning to give 5E a try for a while now.... and now i know exactly what i'll play first!
Thank you for making this. I'd always wondered what Todoroki would be like in D&D.
You can also use Rime's binding ice from Fizban treasury of dragons and the Metamagic adept from Tasha's caldron of everything. 😃
Can you make "How to play Alucard (Hellsing/Hellsing_Ultimate) in Dungeon & Dragons"?
Secretly ask the DM if you can be a Immortal Day Walking Vampire with no ill effects
@@aienma6660 and how about the Abridged version?
@@timkarlsson1750
Take a few levels in bard
Crossbow vampire!... Wait
They have a vampire race in the Plane Of Ravnica MTG DND stuff. After that, maybe a dex fighter? Eldritch knight?
This is rad as hell. I wanna play this build in a one shot sometime.
You can get both Elemental Disciplines at Monk 3.
Omg so good. Could you please do Eraserhead?
I’ve been looking forward to this one!
Same! Evoctation is kind of the basic wizard school, but it's so good at what it does.
Tulok the Barbrarian It’s one of those things where it’s often overlooked because it’s “basic” but when you really look at it it’s pretty cool.
"I promise not to make any jokes that are dumb and obvious"
*immediately starts playing "Hot and Cold" as the background music*
personally, if I were to do this I would choose the Way of the Ascendant Dragon (which, if I'm not mistaken, didn't exist when this video was made so no hate for not using it)
Do All-Might? I'm thinking Zealot/Totem Barbarian
Also, no mention of Heat Metal? It's an amazing consistent damage spell with some great effects, amd is in keeping with the theme. Yeah the restriction of casting it on metal only is restrictive, but there's a LOT of metal on humanoid creatures. Coins, belt buckles, weapons, armour, jewelry, you name it. Hit the Death Knight with it and laugh as he either spends the next 10 rounds removing his armour (good luck) or suffers damage per round AND disadvantage on all checks.
Heat metal is not a wizard spell
That first joke got me so hard
Trying this build for a my next d&d session. 😄
Youre doing god's work
I wonder how you would build Deku....
Maybe a Champion Fighter / Open Hand Monk? I dunno, he’s like Superman. Kinda hard to pin down in the DnD system.
Marcus Wright Eldritch Knight, maybe?
Don't forget warlock, with all might as the patron
Can you do Red Riot? I really want to make a build for him.
I think Eijiro Kirishima is way cooler
I'm mad late but you could always take Crossbow Expert then reflavor your spells as punches/kicks in close range.
2 Lock(feind)/x Wizard(Evoker)
Dad is definitely portrayed as evil entity doing what he can to get ahead(at first anyways)
Could also maybe do 1 dip to Lock (Hexblade) instead of feind as you were bred to be a weapon and Flavor the Hexblade's Curse as you focusing your training when it counts
For invocation options
Armor of Shadows and maybe Beguiling influence (playing up the nobility of being the son of a famous hero)
Lock Spell Options
Cantrips. Prestigitation, Frostbite, maybe Chill Touch (playing it as necrosis from the cold)
1. Armor of Agathys(icy armor), Hellish Rebuke, Burning Hands(if feind), Shield(if Hexblade. raising an ice wall to protect you at the last second)
Background options. Soldier still works. But the Noble (specifically for the position of privilege feature) works aswell (being the son fo the number 2 hero) maybe asking the DM to switch up the skills to the same as soldier's
For all the wizard stuff and feats pretty much the same will work.
I'd only argue that swapping out those six levels of monk for wizard would be more appropriate as Todoroki's main weakness has always been that in melee he just doesn't stack up to other characters
And you would be able to get a whole bunch of fire and ice spells as cantrips like Ice Knife, Burning Hands and Fireball
"jotaro joestar" Who?
I think maybe for the multi-tasking listeners, it would be better if you slow the script down a bit and give more detailed examples of how the different build choices would play out in a campaign, or how they were demonstrated in the source material. You give small ones, but they go by really fast for those who are doing homework/driving/working while listening, or even just those who aren’t as experienced in DnD and can’t picture everything immediately.
My first three characters had fire bolt as a cantrip after I played a bard it was my favorite spell
Now I wanna see your opinions on character builds for Midoriya and Bakugo as well. I've actually already made a character losely based off of Katsuki. Summer Eldarin for that extra fiery-ness, evocation (fire) focused sorcerer. A bit of thunder spells too but that's because they say boom.
I kinda found your channel after watching ABD Illustrates adapt a bunch of Disney charas for D&D (I'm super curious about what your take on those would be but no pressure if you'd rather not) and you've covered some of my favorite characters and series on this channel, many of which I would never have figured out how to tackle so, thank you so much for all your work! :) I hope you cover more MHA in the future, but even if you don't I have no doubt your channel will continue to be a fountain of awesome ;)b
Plz do Kirishima, I cant figure out where to start for his build in D&D
Goliath Barbarian/Monk. Goliaths get a racial ability that lets them roll a d12 and reduce the amount of damage they just took by that number. Barbarians get Unarmored Defense and Rage, allowing you to take half damage from physical attacks and deal more damage with strength attacks.
For stats go point buy,
12 Strength(Becomes 14 from Goliath), 13 Dexterity, 15 Constitution(Becomes 16 from Goliath), 10 Intelligence, 13 Wisdom, 10 Charisma. Your Rage feature represents your quirk for the most part, which grants you a +2 bonus to your damage, meaning your strength can be a tad lower than normal for now. Plus, these stats let you do the multiclass you're planning, which means it's a tad necessary.
Monks use their fists to fight and can also Deflect missiles which is a similar ability to the Goliath racial, allowing them to roll 1d10+Dex+Monk level to reduce the damage of a projectile by that amount. If the damage becomes 0 after being reduced, you can throw the projectile 30 feet at an enemy.
I'd stick around 3 levels of Barbarian for the subclass, and then 17 levels of monk. You get the cool benefits of 17th level monk (1d10 punch die, your subclass capstone) and still get a Barbarian subclass to really round out that part of your build.
For Barbarian subclass, go Totem. You're going to want Bear totem, because it means you take half damage from all damage types except psychic (which really works flavorfully) when enraged.
For Monk subclass, you want Open-Palm. It gives you some pretty cool abilities, like Stunning Strike and a Self Heal to really sell Kirishima's fortitude.
silver age d20 and modern 20 vigilanse has brick build too
I have no idea what this man's talking about but I'm here, binging, and nodding in confusion.
YES!!!
I agree! Yes!
I'd love to see you do the members of the Seven Deadly Sins!
We're u salty aswell when he canceled the escanor build lol
Hmmm shoto. Guess it's time for All Might
A fun way to play into Todoroki's aversion to his own fire would be to roll percentile after casting fire spells to gauge how he'd act. Like if he'd be fine, irritable, depressed, or straight up pissed.
I really wanna see a Deku vid, I’ve always wanted to know how one could make a character like him..
Probably a Barbarian who makes heavy usage of Reckless Attack and Tavern Brawler for that unarmed combat and good grappling. If you want Monk levels, go for Long Death. It's hardly Deku's attitude, but the abilities are similar to his high-risk high-reward fighting.
That was awesome! Also, pls Joseph.
Its neck and neck! I'm not against ballot stuffing if you want to tell some friends to fix it for you ;)
Joseph joestar?
Hey tulok! Thank you for taking my request for the polls! All of the Joestars will be created though, right? Eventually? In future videos?
Jojo runner up will be in a redemption poll, as for Jojo 3, I sort of am tracking how well videos do from various series to get a read on what people want more of. If they do well (I assume they will, you're definitely not the only person asking for Jojos) they'll be done as one of the non-polled Thursday videos sometime
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Thank you so much!
Hi i was just wondering if anyone has made a character sheet of this yet since it is very confusing and i cant keep track of it
EEEEH, my name is........ todoroni!! I'm a chef!!
"I promise not to make any jokes that are dumb and obvious"
The Title card: *CAUSE YOU'RE HOT AND YOU'RE COLD*
Idek I needed this
DM: Sure, you can Deal fire and cold damage with your Fists, but no blugdening them
Dm: A Remorharz attacks you, roll initiat- what I'm saying, he is immune to fire and cold, roll dath save
Death*
Elemental Adept, baby!
@@tyro334 Immunity, baby.
That's what your friends are for
CaronDriel elemental adept ignores immunities
@@thegayghost872 No, it ignores resistance. PHB Pg. 166:
"Elemental Adept:
Prerequisites: Able to cast at least one spell
When you gain this feat, choose one of the following damage types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder.
Spells you cast ignore resistance to damage of the chosen type. In addition, when you roll damage for a spell you cast that deals damage of that type, you can treat any 1 on a damage die as a 2.
You can select this feat multiple times. Each time you do so, you must choose a different damage type."
Maybe the winchesters from supernatural ( to celebrate the final season), cyborg, blob, sabretooth, magneto, luke cage, purple man, kingpin, bond james bond, abe sapien, ultron, ant man, martian manhunter, i would have commented sooner but i was at work
Ok, so I hope to have a Winchester by Halloween. I'm just currently in Season 2 and there are (*googles*) oh good gravy, 14.
Hmm, what other MHA characters would translate well? Mei Hatsume is definitely an Artificer. Tokoyami's probably a Kenku with that raven's head of his, but I'm not sure what class would best represent his Dark Shadow. Way of the Astral Self monk, maybe, or Warlock with a reflavored Eldritch Blast. Kirishima's Hardening quirk seems like it could be represented very nicely by the way Barbarian Rage is handled in 5e--possibly mixed with Fighter levels? Shinsou is a Wizard of the School of Enchantment...
Todoroki has always relied solely on his quirk to get by so I don't understand why you chose monk.
If INT is his spellcasting ability and we're going with a multiclass, the mystic Wu Jen discipline makes far more sense. Pick up "Mastery of Fire" and "Mastery of Ice"
He's shown at least basic hand to hand combat ability he's still saying to focus on ranged but he just picked it to make it an option that's not terrible
Todoroki was able to punch an injured Deku and send him flying back about 2-3 yards while also being low on stamina himself, I don't know about you but that just screamed to me "peak human" with martial arts training. In my opinion he should get the 'Open Hand Technique' of the Monk that allows you to knock back enemies 15 feet.
@@BrendenTait8858 Where?
I read the thumbnail and at first thought it said "How to Play Todoroki in BED"
That's the video Yaoyarozu wants lol
Hey. Have u thought about doing Aang from avatar? Got a pc in my game thats kinda going for Avatar like build with revised elemental monk
Do escanor!
I think instead of Evocation, maybe you could have used War Magic for defensive abilities? Anyways, I liked this a lot, don't stop!
The jokes are hilarious, I'd vote in your poll but i have no clue who those characters are.
Nor did I. Then I climbed aboard the JoJos hype train. It is... bizarre
Tulok the Barbrarian 10/10 200 IQ Play well done. As a jojo fan myself that just made me crack a smile
Could you makeing a how to play Spyro in DnD video?
Could you do song jin woo from solo leveling. A necromancer who can fight hand to hand
huh... I would have expected Sorcerer to be a part of this build
It is a bit more accurate to his lore and Pyromancer or pheonix sorceror works but then you can't really gain cold as easily
@@BrendenTait8858 Fair enough.
I would have mixed the Monk Levels in with the Wizard levels a little earlier just so you get the feel of a character who can handle themselves in a brawl but still better with their power
I may play this sometime.
What would hawks be I think that would be really interesting
Have you thought of making a one punch man build, I know obvious right just curious though.
Max level Monk of the Open Hand. You can One Punch 5 times a day, and otherwise you punch really well. This also conveniently covers that Saitama doesn't wear armor, use weapons, or fly, but can run really fast.
I'd love to see one of these for Shoji Mezo
Could the next character be Magic (Ilyana Rasputin) from X-men?
Ooh. Kind of a deep cut, not gonna lie. Eventually we'll probably cover all the X-men, but it just might take a little time.
Please do natsu dragneel from Fairy Tail. I've been trying to get a solid build for a while and it would be awsome to get someone like you to make it
feel like strength and charisma should be switched, he is quite strong and very antisocial...
this build is kinda op mgl
DO TOKOYAMI AS A KENKU!!
I know what I gotta do next time I die.
Oh, HECK YES
Technically fly is accurate now he can propel himself thru the air with his fire
CAN YOU MAKE ALL MIGHT OR DEKU?? I’ve been trying but I’m too dumb and this is haaaaaaard
I need an Izuku Midoriya build plz! I was trying to figure it out myself but the best I could come up with is a Pugilist 17/Barbarian 3
Icy hot
Try creating the movie version Van Hesling's Frankenstien's Monster.
What would be the modifiers for strength constitution wisdom and charisma and what would the hit points be I’m pretty new to D&D
My build for him is a silver dragonic bloodline sorcerer tiefling with flames of phlegethos. Dad's a fiery devil and mom's the icy dragon he used to make his "masterpiece".
Just play Mystic with Mastery of Ice and Fire disciplines lul
Jeremy Buban Good luck finding a DM that’ll allow mystics, lol
@@ascapedgoat8462 Already have 😎 Just make sure they're used to pathfinder and not 5e lmao
Dekuuuuuuu
As much as I empathize with the boy breaking themselves to get work done, I have no idea how to build that... I'll get more caught up, maybe find something to do a later season Deku...
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 but deku has much more control of his quirk in season 3,i imagine the main of a deku build is a way of the open Hand monk.
elemental adept does not reroll 1's and 2's for the chosen element type. Instead you treat 1's as 2's for damage.
I would have taken 1 level in Warlock fror Armor of Agathyst and Hellish rebuke to make everyone think twice before hitting you!
Please make all might
shota aizawa please
If you made a bakugou build from mha I'd totally subscribe to your channel.
Make froppy pls
Doesn’t Sorcerer for Todoroki better? He doesn’t exactly lug around a giant book wherever he goes...
Make Deku in dnd
I made my d&d character a Todoroki, but I was a LV 3 sorcerer, and only had fire type cantrips ...
Hay make Bell Cornell from its wrong to pick up a girl in a dungeon
Why all buids are lv 20, dnd have several limitations to cosplay a character, and its unjogable at lv 20 because fil campains are that level
*laughs in 23rd-level Eldritch Knight* The DM is the final arbiter. Unless you're playing Adventurer's league or have a DM who is strictly RAW with nothing allowed that isn't in the book, you can cosplay your character however you like.
The idea is that if you want to use the build you jump in at whatever level your group is starting at (1, 3, 5, whatever) and then follow along with the build as your character levels. That's the primary reason he goes level by level instead of just presenting a level 20 build and telling us what it can do (and of course the secondary reason is to show how he got there). Granted a lot of builds don't start to resemble their inspiring character until a few levels in, but in the vast majority of cases you're not going to be literally playing that character in D&d but rather an original character that's based on them (or at least uses their power) so it still works.
Okay but quirks are literally genetic powers like how are you telling me that’s not a sorcerer...
Fun
Do one on deku
I would make give him a level in druid. So he can get 2 cantips. Shape water & shape fire (forgot the name lol).that way he can use it more in an rp setting
Druid isn't necessary. He can get both in wizard or with a magic initiate feat. Both are wizard spells.
@@ericpeterson8732 oh, I didnt know wizard also had access to them!
You don't reroll 1's and 2's with elemental adept
