Battle of the Bass Saxes
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2008
- Giorgio Beberi & Bert Brandsma playing their bass saxophones.
Giorgio from Italy plays his 1983 Selmer and Bert from the Netherlands his 1921 Martin.
This meeting took place in Marialva Park Hotel during the 2008 Cantanhede Jazz Festival, June 13.
Giorgio played at the festival with the Tiger Dixie Band and Bert with his Dixieland Crackerjacks.
The tune is Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey.
The guys are just great. I like the horns, the sound.
I've listened to this 20 times and its better each time.
Awesome! Klinkt super!
This is the best bass sax on the web whenever I get discouraged I just listen to this and I am all better for another month.
P. S. I think I'll get some sandals to practice in too.
Thanks Dave in Texas.
We simply took th lead of the tune : Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey , and made up the parts
ourselves. Then we started improvising on the chords of that tune.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
Every now and then we are all blessed with a video camera, and that video camera catches moments that no one else in this world will ever see had it not been for the beloved video camera... thank God for whoever brought the camera this time!
That's probably about the most coherent arranging effort for two bass saxophones that there could be. Who would even think of that combination - well done!
Well said!😊
Fantastic!! Thanks Bert!
You guys ROCK!! Nothing like hearing two pro's just jammin' out the tunes!!
This swings PHENOMENALLY ! Awesome !
No video has made me smile like this one did! Love it.
Man that was nice.....sounds like some New Orleans second sine jazz....Great Job guys.
This is the most epic video I have ever watched.
Man those horns sound nice! I played alto and baritone for about 9 years through middle school and high school. Then gave my horn to my brother and now he plays it. Love to have another. One day i remember I didn't practice my scales and my band director locked me in the instrument storage room. I was all alone so I looked around and found an old dusty sax case. I pulled the horn out and it was a Bass! I put by baritone mouthpiece on it and played it! Sweet! Found out it was know as the Bitch!
That sounds great. Love the socks.
just awesome
Thanks gents - you've really cheered up my afternoon (and not just by being funky in sandles) - wishing you many years happy grooving x
I love this.
This video always puts a smile on my face...
What beautiful Saxophones!!!! AMAZING Tone!!!!!
@imakedookie Thanks!!! At last someone who doesn't discuss my socks!!! You made my day!
Amazing job.
Classical Playing, Clown Wardrobe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah....!
I Love this.. The Sax ,and the Cello are the two instruments I wish I had started as a child. Talent, and Yes The Blue socks Rule.. Plus you see the "Instant" Brotherhood, that music can create.. No matter who or how far apart, Universal.
+TheBlunt Instrument No sorry, I don't know that TV series......
You are never too old to learn one of those :)
Freakin' AWESOME!!!!!
That was great!
Very well done !
Thanks!
Great job !!
This stuff is also great. Thank you :D
great swingin' performance!
Whoa doesn't even describe this!
This is so tight, also humorous because you guys dont make the bass look so big. My Band director played bass at sax camp and hes like, 5'1, so it looks huge to him.
that was great!!
Sublime. Thank you. -teflon prosk
perfect!!!
Hi Linda, thanks for visiting our music videos. It was a lot of fun to make this one. We don't have many occaissions were we meet fellow bass saxophonists!
Kind regards from Holland,
Bert Brandsma
You Guys Rock
Bass sax still rules (even after so many years since this was posted) - greetings from Germany!
Nice video! Bass sax kicks ass!
Awesomesauce!
Beautiful symphony
Right on Man, who says those electric guitarists rule, us SAX PLAYERS RULE!!!
I think you guys should bust into a rock gig and chase the electric guitarist around the stage.
awesome
Oohh.. very, very good!
Awesome!
I'm a strings and brass player, but this is exactly why I would like to learn the saxophone! :-)
Great job, Guys!
this is very nice.love this instument .keep up the good work
I love my selmer:)
Everybody is talking about the socks! For the regular gigs during this Portugal tour I was dressed totally in blue. This video was just a lot of fun in between. I was too lazy to change my socks then.
Hope you enjoyed the music!
BB
Bb 1 full octave lower then a tenor sax
thanks for watching,
BB
i want to own one one of these days!!!! i have an alto and a tenor and would like to have the whole family! ....and great playing, of course ~ you guys have superlungs!!!!
On the Martin I used to play a 1950's Selmer Bass mouthpiece, number E. It is not so wide as a vintage original bass sax piece, but it worked pretty well. Had a lot of punch. On several other basses I use original wide pieces. you can play softer on them.
The first time I hear something for bass saxophone that actually sounds like music.
i think this is amazing!
i dont play bass but i wanna!
I’ve never seen any of those saxophones before
hello, great giorgio!!!
I'm dying, this is so cool.
Gooooooooddddd!!!!!!!!!
Everybody won!
Hahahah,
Dave, thanks you made my day.
The sandals are really the hidden secret.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
luv the left gus sox
they RULE!!!
FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH MY GOSH!!! hahaha you guys are my idols! xD
This is GREAT!! I'm a saxophonist and just got my first bass sax. It's a different beast for sure, and you sound great on it. I'm still not quite that comfortable on mine, but soon I'll be posting some videos!
What are THOOOOOSE!!!!!
Blue socks with sandals + bass saxophone = EPIC
It was a nice festival where we both happened to play. Just made this up for fun in the hotel where we stayed.
Thanks for watching.
BB
This is great stuff!!
Grandi..... siete Mitici con la Maiuscola.... (un baritonista)
Bravo!!!!
I'm sorry, we had no other location available at that time and place.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
@ABrandsma thanks :)
The bass sax looks sick.
Ik heb er 2 te koop.
Conn 1922, zilver
Conn 1921, goldplated met bijzondere gravures.
Met vriendelijke groeten,
Bert Brandsma
Blond = beautifull.
These are bass saxophones.
Contrabass is bigger, baritone is smaller.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
Thanks! The socks belong to the (blue) bandoutfit I was supposed to wear during this tour. BTW, we will be in the UK soon. We'll play the Birmingham jazzfestival next weekend.
Well, I have 3 conservatory degrees in studying saxophone and can definitly assure you that these two horns are bass saxophones. The baritone is a bit higher pitched in the key of Eb, and the contrabass saxophone is lower pitched compared to the bass, it is also in Eb. The bass sax is keyed in Bb, a full octave lower then a tenor. Exeptions are a few known original Adolphe Sax bass saxes from the 19th century that are keyed in C.
dude your socks are awesome but your saxaphone skills are great
@2flytubaguy Thanks!
Hi Redhead!
Thanks for listening,
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
Lindo
@honeybeeman yes, that's a great one!
This is so cool. I play bari, but i am definitely gonna get a bass sax now. Oh yea i am almost certain that at 2:56, one of you two was playing the trombone line from "Snake Rag" by Ellington....
I love Conn saxes, got a Conn sopranino, a 1929 straight soprano, a 1937 alto (Connqueror) 2 1937 Tenors, (both Conqueror) and 3 conn bass saxes.
It's my favourite brand, so I can completely understand your love for your Silverplated tenor.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
I started on clarinet, switched to alto sax to study at conservatory. It's only since 2004 that I have a bass sax, althought I did some gigs the year before.
The intro is just a socalled vamp, a short common harmonic progression. Theme from the Muppet show used something like this. There are others to.
Love the socks
This is fun. It makes me want to take out a 2nd morgage and get one of these things.
The socks belong to the (blue) bandoutfit I was supposed to wear during this tour.
This was filmed in between, I was to lazy to change the socks also.
Kind regards,
Bert
nice
I think those socks are the bee's knees! The music's great and the socks are swell.
Both of your playing is amazing. Speaking of Selmer, they now make their bass saxophones to low A!
this inspires me to switch from alto to bari sax or bass.
I want to play a bass sax sooooooo bad.
That's how it sounded when I tried to play it...
@97berryhill There is no part. Giorgio constructed it from the chord sequence.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
@ABrandsma Heard sopranos were a bit tricky to play but didn't know really why. NOw I know..
@Jazzman5456 When I wear these same socks in the regular band outfit, nobody complains!
We didn't see it, played by memorie.
Thanks for watching,
BB
rite now i play the euphonium and since the tuba player at my school might but probably won't leave but if she does i will switch to tuba and i also play the tenor sax and would eventually like to move on to the bass saxophone
In my experience that is often right, but it also depends on the shape of the mouthpiece. I mean the distance between the reed and the mouthpiece itself. If the distance is large, it is less easy to play soft.
Generally speaking, vintage mpc are closer to the reed. But not always.
