FILM DESCRIPTION:
Quentin Tarantino's sprawling homage to action films of both the East and the West reaches its conclusion in this continuation of 2003's ultra-violent Kill Bill Vol. 1. Having dispatched several of her arch-enemies in the first film, The Bride (Uma Thurman) continues in Kill Bill Vol. 2 on her deadly pursuit of her former partners in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, who, in a furious assault, attempted to murder her and her unborn child on her wedding day. As The Bride faces off against allies-turned-nemeses Budd (Michael Madsen) and Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah), she flashes back to the day of her deadly wedding, and we learn of how she was recruited to join the DiVAS, her training under unforgiving martial arts master Pai Mei (Liu Chia-hui), and her relationship with Squad leader Bill (David Carradine), which changed from love to violent hatred. Originally planned as a single film, Kill Bill grew into an epic-scale two-part project totaling more than four hours in length; as with the first film, Kill Bill Vol. 2 includes appearances by genre-film icons Sonny Chiba, Michael Parks, Larry Bishop, and Sid Haig; Wu-Tang Clan producer and turntablist RZA and filmmaker and composer Robert Rodriguez both contributed to the musical score.

David Carradine was just a brilliant actor... He was beyond awesome in this movie..
Yes. Sad that he was murdered. Talent is rare. That is why Nazi scientists were coveted whilst Nazi politicians, and soldiers, executed at the close of WW2. Because war keeps raging, while scientists and artists are always in demand. The lesson being, if you are useful, they are less likely to cause your heart to explode. And the person who killed Carradine is somebody who hates the Arts. .. So, I deduce that his drink was not poisoned by a woman.
I don`t think he was murdered,though.

Seriously, this scene is terribly outdated after years comic book movies making everything highlighted in the mainstream. It's just wrong. If anything, the concept applies MORE to Spiderman than Superman. Superman grew up as Clark Kent learning to hide his powers. Peter Parker just randomly became a spider-man one day without any choice or learning of how to balance 2 lives.
This is especially true with Batman. The socially-normal Bruce Wayne billionaire is made up because he's not really a socially normal person. Even without the mask & cape, he'd STILL have a pretty dark personality. He could survive in society, but they'd all know him as an eccentric billionaire, very dark and maybe even suspicious.
50 years of Superman comic books supported this speech. That quote is from 90s TV show Adventures of Lois and Clark. Is that more canon than the source material? Pretty sure someone of David Carradine’s age would be more accurate when referencing old comic books vs. a stupid tv writer for a wildly inconsistent show.

God, what I'd give to have seen more of this character. He had some of the best lines, and the way he said them was so freaking awesome, because he had the voice for it. Too bad we never will get another chance to see him in another movie. RIP, David Carradine.

This says much more about Bill than it does Superman. Bill is the one with the critique of the whole human race. Bill is the one playing pretend as a kind dad to BB.
I don’t think he would treat BB poorly, but eventually she would grow to be an assassin, which is exactly why Beatrix tried to leave Bill and the Deadly Viper Squad.

I fundamentally disagree with Bill’s perspective on this but that’s really the beauty of the scene. It so thoroughly explains Bill’s perspective on his role in the movies. Beatrix’s perspective represents what I think Superman’s actual intentions are: the desire to embrace humanity. Not critique it but be a part of it. It’s a simple desire to be normal because there’s an inherent comfort in that. Bill, however, is a cynic he doesn’t believe there’s a value to being flawed or that someone can choose to be who they want to be. He views Superman’s actions as an insult because he can’t comprehend that someone with so much power would choose to humble himself like that because he himself never would. He is as much the Superman in this metaphor as Beatrix. Perhaps that’s what drives his obsession for her more than anything else.

Based upon your analysis, bill would've been better off emulating Lex Luther because that's his perspective on humanity. That's the main reason why I, once, he rejected concrete evidence that Clark and Superman one of the same. He couldn't fathom, in his hubris that someone with that much power he choose to be an ordinary human. That he would be fooled by a pair of glasses and a business suit. In his words, "such power needs to be exploited consistently." Immediately as I heard this critique on the character, I wanted to knock bill out. He has no concept of Superman really is as a person and example of how warped his morality and ethics are.

When I was in highschool I swore that Vol. 1 was better but as I get older I start to appreciate Vol. 2 a little more. It's the little things. I just think the second one has better dialogue with just the right amount of action where as now I feel the first one was nothing but balls to the wall fighting but hey, that's just my opinion.

Why people separate those movies? It is one story that cuted in two pieces. Tarantino just did not show all details of the story in first movie to make people come to watch rest of it.

Also, simply not true. That's just the only explanation a psychopath like Bill can come up with for Superman's behavior. The true answer is way simpler: Kent is the antithesis of Superman, and is a way more effective cover. "How could mild-mannered Clark Kent be superman!?" Bill just can't understand why Superman wouldn't want to be Superman all the time. He doesn't understand the value of being able to live a normal life with normal relationships, so he invents this whole overcomplicated critique bit.
Its like how Lex Luthor refused to believe Clark Kent is Superman even after a computer told him that, he refuses to believe a living God would want to live a normal life and not either be disguised as a larger than life figure or as just Superman all the time
There are too many interpretations to say only this one is right, yes Clark Kent is a perfect disguise but he does find humanity weak and even states “its like living in a world made of cardboard, so fragile I have to be careful, I’m always holding back, I can never let myself go”

These two dweebs think they are so smart. Pre-Crisis Superman was very much what Bill was referring to. The original, true Superman. Superman became less arrogant throughout the years to contend with the lighthearted nature of Marvel comics, and he did a good job of being one staple hero that was infinitely more iconic than most Marvel Heroes. However, the Superman was know today is a betrayal of what he was before. Psychologically, Superman was designed exactly as Bill described him. He was never malicious, but he did used to be very arrogant.
@@waltermalone216 Not to mention the fact that interpretations are just that: interpretations. Some can certainly be more valid than others, and Bill does back up his interpretation with some very interesting reasoning, but in the end there's no absolutely "correct" way to interpret fiction.

The hell with the psychological analysis. This is one hell of a film, with great performances by all, fantastic music, amazing dialog, and an epic story. This will be viewed as Tarantino's magnum opus and Carradine's finest performance.
I think the irony of this scene is what makes it so good. Anyone who knows superman knows that this is a fundamentally incorrect understanding of the character and it really says a lot about Bill. Also I think it's funny that this is honestly a better assessment regarding Batman then it is Superman
Exactly. Bruce Wayne is the mask; Batman was Batman since the day his parents died in front of him. There was a very good comic series in the early 2000s in which Bruce Wayne was framed for murder and Batman decided to abandon his private identity and dedicate his life 100% to the vigilante side of it.
when you think about it, his monologue about Clark/Superman is really about how Bill sees Beatrix. he sees Beatrix as nothing more than an assassin the same way he thinks Superman cannot see himself as a human (Clark)

Bill's got this backwards, due to his resentment of Beatrix leaving him. "Superman" doesn't exist, Clark Kent was raised as a normal boy from Smallville and he still views Smallville and humanity with a protective lens.

Well, Bill is a sociopath. "Clark Kent" is a disguise, a layer around "Superman". In a sense both of you, you and Bill, are right. But out of Bills perspective (like if Bill was Superman), humanity does not matter. Bill does not care for people, so Supermans caring for others is alien to him.
This scene has two layers, one is the superficial one for people who just remember superman when they were kids, and it’s still good dialogue, but if you’re a nerd, you know superman is Clark Kent underneath all of it, he’s a paragon, the Clarke Kent the world sees isn’t the true Clarke either, he’s a persona made up so people won’t fear him. Now, on the other hand, Underneath it all, Bruce Wayne is Batman, who has honed his body into a weapon. Bill should view himself like this, but his superman analogy shows how he views himself and Kiddo, as something greater than normal people, not simply the best humanity has to offer

Y'all way too caught up on the Superman analogy. Bill's interpretation of the character lends itself to the point he's trying to make -- that Beatrix is pretending to be something she's not. Whether you agree with that interpretation or not is irrelevant, and you don't have to agree with it to a) see his point or b) appreciate how it speaks to his character that he would view Superman this way. I certainly do.
Bill is still full of shit, though. Snake Charmer that he is, he's only trying to talk his way out of the inevitable: Beatrix is going to kill him and nothing he can say will change that.
True except Bill is not scared if Beatrix and he doesn't see her killing him as inevitable. He's a trained assassin and he thinks he was justified to do what he did. It's just Beatrix outdueled him

I can't imagine Warren Beaty playing the role of Bill. Carradine has so much charisma, that's why his nickname is snake charmer in this movie. Bravo!
This dialogue is so perfect because it also shows a lot about the character who's saying it. Clark Kent is weak because it allows Superman to get a real look at humanity. Some people will naturally defend the weak, some people will antagonise them. Either way, it allows Superman to decide whether humanity is worth his protection. Judging people on how they treat those weaker than them is one of the most classic tests there are. But Bill interprets it as Superman defends humanity because that's just what he does, because they're weak and he is strong, with no real reason behind it. Beatrix kills because thats just what she does, because others are weak enough and she is strong enough to do so, with no reason behind it. But in the end, both Superman and Beatrix had empathy driving their actions and Bill was just too late to see it.

Humans are weak and unable to protect themselves, and Superman is essentially an overpowered but benevolent god. I think Bill is wrong in the sense that Superman doesn't especially look DOWN on humans as pathetic and inferior, but I bet Clark Kent wakes up every morning glad he isn't one of them and has those amazing powers. Superman loves the glory of being a world-saving hero. He loves being a god.

So we get people like OMNIMAN massacring a city or HOMELANDER having a bloodbath

But often we want something so "REAL" ,That we often discard what's GOOD
The simplicity of saving a cat out of a tree, Being a friend when someone needs help

Beatrix was not motivated by empathy whatsoever. She's not a heroic character. The whole point of Beatrix killing Vernita Green and not giving a f that her daughter saw it is that she's a fully self-centered person and perfectly happy keeping the cycle of violence alive. She wants to get revenge and get her daughter back, she doesn't care who's life she ruins or who she has to kill to get there. We can sympathize with her as the narrative frames her as our protagonist, but like Budd said "that woman deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die. But then again, so does she"
@@publiusventidiusbassus1232 I disagree that she's 'fully self centred'. Her own desires are her top priority, above not harming others, but that doesnt mean she doesn't have empathy. If she was fully self centred, she would believe she was righteous in everything she did, she wouldn't tell Vernita's daughter to come get revenge when she wanted because she wouldn't view what she did as worthy of being revenged. At basically every turn she displays high levels of empathy, giving pretty much everyone an 'easy way out' that they just never choose, and after that point, she's just not going to disadvantage herself by continuing to let morals get in the way. Empathy in no way equals heroic, and empathy in no way equals actually acting according to said empathy; she still has it, regardless, and calling her 'fully self centred' is a gross oversimplification that ignores the nuance of her character
She's also more obviously not wholly self centred because her entire driving force through the whole story is her daughter. When it was only about herself, she was happily risking her life day in and day out, going through whatever her probably unhealthy relationship with Bill was like. She didn't care until it meant her daughter would suffer the side effects too. The one time she couldn't ignore her empathy and overall humanity for the sake of her own needs. As Superman is Clark Kent because he was raised by the Kents, The Bride is Beatrix because she wants to give a good life to her daughter. Both are things Bill fundamentally doesn't seem to understand.
In my opinion, the idea of Superman/Clark Kent is almost the complete opposite. Yes, he's BORN on Krypton as Kal-El, but he's RAISED as Clark Kent in Kansas. He grew up in a small Midwestern town raised with the morals and values of Midwestern farmers. This is also why Clark's been seen as a bumbling, clumsy man. He's so intoned with the wide open spaces of Smallville rather than the fast-paced, crowded energy of the big city. If anything, Superman is Clark's critique of how a superhero SHOULD be
The point is, Superman was born with his abilities. His abilities are what makes him Superman. Without those abilities, he wouldn't be Superman, he'd just be Clark Kent. His analogy was about her being born a killer. Now maybe she wasn't necessarily born a killer, but what he was saying is it was in her "DNA" to be a killer. She was trained, she was one of his top assassins, and she did her job well. But she definitely had to be a killer before she ever met Bill too. So Bill didn't make her a killer, he found her as a killer, then recruited her, then had her skills upgraded by having her train under Pai Mei. She was already an assassin before she ever trained under Pai Mei.
To further elaborate on his point, when she tried to change her identity to start a new life, the identity she chose was basically one of the most boring little nobodies. That was how she saw normal people, and that wasn't who she really was. She was always a killer, and eventually that fact would have caught up to her even if Bill didn't, meaning she could never be happy in her new identity and would ruin it somehow and then run from that life too.
Just like how Superman could never just be Clark Kent. Superman even tried many times to become "normal" and not use his powers, doing things like ignoring calls for help he could hear with his super hearing, and even going as far as to have his powers removed entirely through use of a machine, but he couldn't sit by and let people get hurt that he could help, so he reinstated his powers. Clark Kent is Superman with the absence of his powers. Which means Superman only exists because of those powers. And the same is true for her. She could try to drown out the nagging feeling in the back of her head, she could try to make herself into a helpless housewife living in some backwater, but in the end, she would still be the person she is.....a killer who worked for one of the most dangerous assassin squads in the world.
Another one of his points is that by her being "Superman", means that her foes automatically become the villain. So Bill is saying he didn't want to be a villain, but by making herself "Superman", she by proxy made him the villain. He's saying that due to her choices, he's inexorably trapped into the role of a villain. We've seen this before in comics, where it's the Super heroes who are actually responsible for creating their archenemies.

As a life long Superman fan I too was thrown when this movie came out. This seemed so wrong to the stuff I had read. Then I realized why: I was very ignorant as to Superman's total history, and for the vast majority of it he was a lot different than what I had read. When I delved more into it, I realized the truth of the matter. And that is that outside of Bill's opinion on Clark Kent being a negative critique of the human race (which he's wrong about because Bill is a villain so he's viewing things in a warped villainous way), despite popular yet grossly misinformed opinion Bill is indeed describing Superman correctly. What he's describing is the classic Superman that existed for half a century before the 80s did a complete 180 on the concept.
How come Bill be a villain and still allow Beatrix to give birth to his baby and not finish her off and raise that child by his own

People are saying that Bill’s description of Superman is inaccurate, and they’re right.
BUT, the point is, it takes someone like Bill to reach this conclusion about Superman. The characterization being incorrect is the point of Bill’s character.
I'm a fan of Superman and I don't think he's inaccurate in his description of Superman at all.I don't see how people can see how Superman would often present himself as Clark Kent any other way BUT as a critique of the human race.
Even Henry Cavill subtly criticized previous versions of Clark Kent and said that it wasn't necessary to portray Clark as being socially awkward,shy,timid,weak,bumbling and clumsy.I never liked the idea that Superman,for whatever unclear reason,felt like he had to present himself that way while he's in disguise as Clark Kent,either. I love the character but there are aspects about him I never quite liked or agreed with and that's one of them.

I remember in one of the comics,when Alfred tells Batman he can take the mask off because he's in The Batcave and doesn't need to hide his secret identity from anyone and Bruce tells him that sometimes he actually feels more comfortable with the mask on then he does with it off.That pretty much says it all in terms of his psychology and how he views himself. It's just like how Rachel Dawes told Bruce in Batman Begins that Bruce Wayne is the mask and Batman is his true face.

And Bill is wrong...how was Superman born Superman. His powers don’t make him Superman. If it weren’t for the Kent’s raising him as Clark Kent, then later on in life he wouldn’t have become Superman. The whole facade of Clark Kent being clumsy and weak etc. Doesn’t happen until later on in his life when he officially *becomes Superman* because he knew he wanted to help people.
But also didn’t want the world to know who he really was. I mean yes he is Superman but he wasn’t *born* Superman he simply became Superman later on in life as Bruce became Batman the night of his parents murder. Same for Peter Parker, Spider-Man was officially born when Uncle Ben died. So Bill is wrong, Superhero’s aren’t born there made.

Interesting theory. I think Superman is unique, but in a slightly different respect. He wasn't actually born Superman, but born Kal-El. And yes, Clark Kent, the human, is an alter-ego, but he didn't choose the name Superman, it was bestowed upon him by the people of the world. In that sense, 'Superman' is another alter-ego.

I know as well as anybody else where and how these interpretations are wrong but I don't care because it gives us a more or less new and unique interpretation of Superman, which can be the result of Tarantino writing Bill that way or Tarantino misunderstanding or intentionally misinterpreting the mythology to give us a cool scene that otherwise might not have worked or happened. Bill is certainly a manipulative person (he is called Snake Charmer after all) so why wouldn't he change the facts to get his point across?
Cosmonaut Variety Hour talked about this scene in his video about The problem with DC heroes. He's says Superman is not Clark Kent's costume, he was Clark Kent before he was Superman which is very true. Everything he did happened on earth. Superman is the nicest superhero of all time he saves humans because he has the power to do it.
This scene is the first one I think of whenever I remember Kill Bill. It's a great observation on the superhero mythos.

I wonder why people are so overly critical of the notion that Superman disguises himself as Clark Kent. Been awhile, but I remember in one comic when Lex Luthor was confronted with the idea that Superman was Clark Kent that he utterly refused to accept that he would spend his time being someone so average.
The entire concept of an alter ego is to act and pretend, and Clark Kent has to pretend; he's had to pretend for the majority of his life to be less than he really is. He has to pretend to be that average face in a crowd. It's when he's Superman where nothing holds him back from being who he is. He may self-identify as Clark Kent, but Clark Kent is the one who has to play pretend; deep down he's the last son of Krypton: Kal-El. The heritage of Krypton means a great deal to him, and is shown that his heart's greatest desire was to have lived a normal peaceful life and raise a family on the planet of his birth.
Similarly, Batman is the inverse. Even though Batman views himself as Batman and not Bruce Wayne, Batman is the one who does the pretending: He pretends not to care, that his sense of justice is all that matters. In the same comic/animated episode that showed Superman's greatest desire, it showed that Batman's was of his parents never being murdered. Furthermore It was in the end the Joker who deconstructed him, disappointed that behind the mask and gadgets that his rival was really just nothing more than a child crying out for mommy and daddy.
that's not true. Although that may be Batman's desire, Batman is a rare type of hero. The trauma of his parents' deaths led to him forming an identity crisis of sorts. Batman, as a persona, represents everything that Bruce Wayne cannot be while Bruce Wayne represents everything that Batman cannot be and, it is because of this, that he is so conflicted as to who he really is. Bruce Wayne knows that if his parents were never murdered that he'd grow up to become Bruce Wayne, as he was born to be, but the trauma was what created Batman and, in essence, that is who Bruce had truly become, whether or not he admits it.

I was in a thrift store once and saw these comic books - and I could not recognize a single title.. Nor were they DC or Marvel. Makes me wonder if every kid grows up in his or her own reality bubble, such that certain books, music, and works of art, are for him, or her, alone to read, watch, or listen to. No, this is plainly wrong. Superman is assimilated immigrant, meaning that yes, he cares about Kryptonian heritage, but Earth is and will always be his home, he was raised on it, he speaks English, he THINKS in English and he has western values. That's why he will be always killing/stopping Zod. Finally he calls himself Clark Kent, not Kal-El.
Him hiding his powers is just like for Peter Parker hiding powers to protect those who surrounding him. And it's nothing more than part of secret identity, because inside, in his soul he isn't kryptonian, but a human, and it is actually Superman that's his alter ego.
BTW overly goofy Clark Kent is invention of Donner movies, watch Max Fleischer cartoons as it has closest to original portrayal of Clark Kent in comics.

The only person who sees superman like this, in DC canon, is lex luthor. And that's why he can't stand him. Superman is everything lex has made himself, through education, through inventing, through business, through his super suit. I know the character well. Bill speaks an inconvenient truth. Superman thinks we are week, but he Hopes for us to get stronger. The root of his character can be almost over protective, but that is how he was taught by Joe El. He can also be a surprisingly blunt here, in fact he is a lot.
He won't kill a man, but he'll cripple a man forever. That says something dark about him.

I agree to this speech somewhat. I don't think Clark is criticizing the human race, I mean he grew up on this planet and defends and protects it as much as he could, by acting weak and cowardly. I agree that the "Daily Planet Clark Kent" acts meek and defenseless because it''s a whole front while Superman is his real persona. DP Clark Kent is acts like an average guy to throw off any suspicion of him being Superman. That is his costume. Superman is his real identity.

One thing about the Superman monologue is that Superman would probably be the first one to disagree with it. While, yes, he does have abilities that separate him from humanity, its his innate humanity that causes him to use his powers to help others.
Superman was raised as Clark Kent, didn’t know he was an alien till close to his teens. Everything that makes him who is comes from Jonathan Kent’s morals and ethics. He was also raised in Kansas on a farm. That is who he is. Lois fell for and is in love with Clark, she just flirted with Superman. He was always an awkward man and portrays Superman as a strong symbol as a performance for the masses. Who he really is can be found in private moments with his loved ones

Its not about what Clark character thinks or what is his opinion..its an idea of superman and human real identity
It's a way to fit in with humans. If the opposite of superman is weak and tentative, then I would say its not a charitable way of viewing most people. But this is Bill's perspective. He's a guy who's assembled basically a team of super killers; he looks at disdain at normal human beings, whom he basically kills at will because he doesn't really feel they're worth consideration. Notice how he kills Bea's entire wedding party without much thought or care, but feels remorse and later shows mercy at killing Bea. He's basically General Zod from Superman (only the strong have value, and Bea is actually Superman.
This scene is cool, but I disagree on how he sees Superman.

That being said, I think Bill didn't see that fact: even if Beatrix was a killer, gifted with great capacity for addaptation and a natural talent to be a killer, that doesn't mean she had to be like that. She a killer, but she's human above all else. Ah, what am I doing here ? Trying to say what a psychopath didn't see in all of his twisted conclusions about life.

It's clever how Bill remain prepared for this moment ever since he left Beatrix for dead. As much as he may have wanted her dead for running out on him when he shot her in the head, he was also opening her eyes to the fact that she couldn't escape her old life and once she went on her rampage, she was proving him right that she'd always be a killer no matter what life she turned over to.

This is one of my favorite movies and I appreciate the hell out of it and its nuances. *But could Bill get any more pretentious and patronizing* ? I think not. It was his characters largest flaw. Except Superman wasn't born Superman.
He was born with the ability to gain those powers whilst under the yellow sun. So yeah he was technically born Superman.
And technically, according to the ORIGINAL origin of Superman from the '30s, he was born with his powers. Before all this "yellow sun" stuff came along, Superman was supposed to have represented the height of human(oid) evolution from a planet that was far older than Earth.
