My 102 year old mother in law remembers coming to Jaywick on holiday. Was really nice back in the day. She said they were chalets and were not made to last. They were not supposed to live in them full time. I believe the beach is lovely.
Jaywick was never designed for year-round living ... just holiday places. This made them relatively cheap, which then attracted the poorest of society, who could not afford anything else. Jaywick Sands are actually beautiful, but what needs to happen ... 1. fix/fortify the sea defences to prevent another flood of the 1950s. 2. Bulldoze everything ... and start over!
In think is was sometime around 1996 or 1997 that I visited the Jaywick regeneration scheme. My wife and even met a local councillor while visiting the regeneration shop. He assured us that we would not recognise Jaywick in a few years time. I don't think this was the designed outcome for Jaywick?
The reason Jaywick is so "poor!" As you say, is because quite a few resident in the Clacton area, who are unemployed, get put there, because the council can pay less rent, also there are many retired people who buy houses there because they are very cheap, and they can afford to own their own property mortgage free, maybe retiring early, or moving there after retirement because they couldnt quite afford paying off a mortgage in a more expensive area. Also, some of the really bad, run down housing, is filled up with the unemployable, maybe ex criminals or people with addictions, that cant get a decent reference from past housing land lords, because they have not looked after their last rented homes. The council seems to put people there that no one else wants to rent to. This is far from most residents, most are great decent people, but a higher percentage than normal, is what makes up the less desirable residents of Jaywick. I bet the area has more residents with a criminal record, than most other areas of Essex.
I would still rather live there than in america any day of the week . At least in England u really don't have to worry bout retting blown away by some nutter with a gun thats having a bad day . Not even in a church is it safe in america no longer .
I'm an American, yes there's a lot of guns. And a lot of people who shouldn't have them. But it's not as bad as the media might say it is. I've lived all over america and every city has area's you wouldn't want to be in. But you could literally be in the united states' and never see crime or be involved in a crime against you. Of course if you are looking for trouble it's not hard to find. But if you are just another person who isn't looking for drugs or hooker's you would hear about it on the news but I doubt you would experience it.
Jaywick is on the flood plain. building and car insurance is going to be expensive there. I would love to retire to a beach front property there, but it floods easily.
Jaywick has been the cheapest place to live in Essex for four decades all the most desperate people and problem cases end up living there, Clacton is going the same way its a dumping ground so many coastal towns that had declining tourism have ended up like this to some degree. There are no development funds to fix things in these towns and any money there is gets wasted on ill-thought-out schemes to revive tourism. Top 10 worst coastal towns is a good video idea.
