Thank you so much for sharing a piece of your grandfather and his life with us. I can hear the pleasure in your voice while talking about him! That's a wonderful memento to have. My mother and I shared a crafting passion in almost all the arts. I haven't been able to go through her craft room yet, but hope that when I feel emotionally better I will find some wonderful mementos too.
Indeed wonderful memories. I can understand it takes a lot more time to do that since it it's your mother. But yes, art is a nice thing to share - and I like the thought that she will somehow live on that way.

The character with the mop is "Jiggs" from the Jiggs and Maggie newspaper strip.
The Cows and the Castle on the lake and the Backpack ones are really polished. Be interesting to scan them and colour them in photoshop.

Why to colour them in photoshop? it's somebody else's art, what would be the point, really?
@@georgie5700 Kasper would end up with something nice to hang on the wall for the children to enjoy and be collaborating with his grandad on an artwork. It's common for linework to be colored later. The originals are still undamaged.
@@mrwoodandmrtin it's ok for your own sketches or from a coloring book to do whatever you please. But for something made by someone else who at some point watched it and decided it was finished, I find it sacrilegious (maybe that's too much but I can't think of another word), even if those drawings are from a 12 yrs old kid who lived in the 1930s and happens to be your grandfather. Not that he would mind, tho. But I'd rather create my own art if I feel the need to create something, to do something with my hands or to just kill the time.

Agreed. There wasn’t many good resources back then, so you had to make do with what you got. It was really a sink or swim moment
people used to draw more than they do today. lack of distraction, probably, and the lack of computers that do the work for us. drawing was more relevant then

This made me cry, thinking of my future grandchildren going through my sketchbooks.. I know it’s selfish to think of myself. I’m on the last page of my 3rd sketchbook and I hope someone spends the time to go through it someday the same way you have with your Grandpa.
I don't think it's selfish at all, you just wanna share your passion with your loved ones! It's going to be great.

Your grandfather sounds like he had a similar career path to my great grandfather. He was an artist, calligrapher and cartographer. We have his diary from his time in the British cavalry during WW1. It features sketches of horses and the French countryside. He had so much incredible belongings that we saved from my grandmother’s before she passed away.

Seeing your grandfather's drawings made me realize the beauty in just drawing. I've been drawing since I was a child, but after I grew up I feel like I need to draw perfectly, without mistakes. and that makes me stay away from my sketchbook for months. But watching this video I realized that just the act of drawing is wonderful and fun. this is so pure. Thank you for sharing something so valuable with us! hugs from Brazil.

there's something so entrancing about learning about tiny pieces of the past generations' lifes, and people tend to underestimate how much of a role art plays into human history. if you were to pass down this sketchbook for the next three or four generations, it could genuinely become a look into those years of living for the children of, let's say - 40 years from now. it's really amazing when you think about it - being able to contribute to this sort of lineage of knowledge. but i guess for now youtube does the job lol
Not only is it cool of you to share your grandfathers work, but it also shows that all you need to do to get good at drawing is to continue to practise.

Yeah, it's kind of interesting how long a period of his life the book stretches over.
If this sketchbook is from like 1939 and the grandfather passed away in 2018, it means that he lived until the age of 91. A very long life of a very interesting person! I'm glad you still have his works! My grandfather Vladimir was an artist too and I want to find his works.
It's interesting to see the portraits he drew, the old hairstyles and clothing

Isn’t it wonderful that the things which, in the present, are considered normal, routinely, boring contain an insane amount of potential to be considered as treasure and discovery just a few decades later?
Life is so short; we can either live to treasure that which is around us or die having never treasured it at all.
I just finished my work and turned on youtube, and i was lucky that i found this video.
really made me move. I also have a passion in art, and i hope my descendants will also have a passion art and have a wonderful time drawing a masterpiece together.

I’m a Norwegian born in 1967 but still recognise a lot from your grandfather’s drawing from 1949 09:10 The nikkers/knickers and leg socks which is still in use among many ski goers. And the bamboo poles, which we used up to the eighteies. He must have been pretty immersed into Norwegian outdoors culture 😊🇳🇴👍🏻

Yes, he spend a great deal of years (not sure exactly how many) in Norway in his youth =)
@@illustratornamedkasper The skigoer in your grandfathers picture is using the «fiskebein» or «diagonalgang» technique for up-hill climbing on skis (I don’t know if there is an English term for it). Its pretty advanced, so he know what he drew 🇳🇴👍🏻
BTW check out the drawings of Peter Wessel Zapffe - Barske Glæder or Kjell Aukrust (many books) for some Norwegian drawings contemporary to your grandfather
This is so beautiful, to have a memento of a dear familiy member, my grandfather loved writing, and i keep a lot of his novels in a portfolio, he loved romantic stories and i loved reading them.
It's so beautiful! When i was a child i paint very awful, but my friend and teacher always told me that i good artist. It wasn't a truth. But I thanks them for this support. Now i have 7 sketchbook and many many full arts. I just want to say that you shall belive yourself and continue drawing. Sorry for my bad English. I hope that you can to understand me

I found a child's sketchbook from probably c.1768 inside a 1768 Book of Common Prayer. Was really interesting seeing what they drew back then. A lot of it was quite similar to today (animals, scenes from the bible, people, silly faces etc) but also some more unusual stuff (hanging, agricultural tools, ships)

This album must have seen *a lot* of things, as it has drawings from the man's childhood and up until the military service. That's at least 10-15 years! And now these 1.5 dozen years of the personal story have got through nearly a century. That's just fascinating.
Thank you so much Kasper for sharing this wonderful treasure of your Grandad's! It made me think back to the many arts and crafts my Grandma and Grandpa introduced me to. I miss them terribly.

You should get some transparent sleeves for those pages, have them professionally preserved for display. Lots of options that will greatly prolong the lifespan of such a delicate heirloom.
you're right. I'm so afraid of silverfish, I see them now and then in our flat and they like paper.

Wow, it was wonderful to have a look through your Grandad's sketch book, how lovely that you have it safe and I can see where you get your drawing skills from Kasper! A shame he did not want to tell all of his stories - Ive heard a lot of people here in the UK kept their secrets for decades after working with British Intellligence during WWII. I wonder if it's partly that they signed the Official Secrets Act so felt they still weren't allowed to talk, but also because they were difficult times to remember, especially with people who didn't live through it with them. Iused to love to hear my Granny's stories about the war, it seemed like old history to me at the time, but when I think about it now I reaised that in fact it was only twenty years after WWII had ended that I was making her tell me those stories about what it was like to live through the Blitz. I think one of your comics would be a wonderful way to remember your Grandad's history if you have enough material.
Yeah, could be that they signed with them. I also think that that generation might be a more "dedicated" to staying true to what they sign - could be!
Oh, it's so interesting to hear stories from then, but of course they must have been hard to live through.
I also recall a story he told me of german tanks coming by on the road one morning. My granddad got mad with his dad not doing anything about it. Crazy times.
I don't think I have enough material unfortunately, but I have viviv images in my head of what he told me =)
So awesome! I have one my grandfather's sketch books. It means so much to me. Even though it is not full of drawings the ones that he did create are really nice. What I think is so cool is that he would go to the art museum near us and sketch the sculptures and African masks. I can still go to that same museum and see the objects that he drew as a young man.
It’s every artists desire that some day, when they are gone, that people will enjoy and find meaning in their art.
Now so many people get to enjoy your grandfather’s art.

My great-great-grandmother was the artist in the family, she drew on leather in the gauchos' equipment, it was so sad to hear my great-grandmother tell that all of her mother's sketches were lost after his mother died of tuberculosis.
It is wonderful that they keep the sketchbook, it is truly a relic, also that you were able to show them to the world in this video, your grandfather will live a long time in the memory of the people who have seen this video ❤

My great-grandfather also died on 2018. It was on December 18, 2018 its sad that he didn’t reach Christmas with us

ВаУ! Це так зворушливо. Ти наче гортаєш історію яка застигла в моменті, історію рідної людини закарбованої в тонких листах альбому, на сторінках яких, залишилась частинка спогадів пра-дідуся. Мій пра-дід теж був надзвичайно талановитою людиною і теж мав хист до малювання. Хоч таких рідкісних речей мені не вдалось дістати, моя бабуся(його дочка), передала його картини(ті які вдалося зберегти, а за своє життя він дуже багато малював), на полотнах, написані маслом. Це надзвичайно. І тому - Ваша історія відгукнулася теплом у моєму серці.

Amazing. It breaks my heart to think about people who live their lives, create things, collect things, and when we are gone, those things remain. What happens to a lot of these things? They get thrown away sometimes. It's kind of an "existential " thought that goes through my mind quite a lot. Like too much, keeps me awake at night, among other thoughts. I appreciate you showing this and giving respect to your Grandfather. It is very nice to see.♥️💔💙
i can relate. Imo it's a balance. For instance I threw out a lot of sketchbooks, but I am keeping a few, those who I really cherish, because otherwise I'd have to rent a container to keep it all in, and I don't want my kids to clear those containers one day. But that's many years from now - let's cherish the present! Thank you for watching!

This is so amazing I love pieces of family history like this, its so beautiful that people can leave something so personal behind. My grandma still has my grandads guitar from when he was a young man. Even though the world was such a different place back then, people's drive to create was just as strong as it is to day and this is a gorgeous example of that. Thank you so much

your grandpa was very good at drawing! for some reason, i love how the paper looks old and wary.
also, i somehow kinda came up with a story idea just by looking at your outfit. there are some parts i couldn’t really come up with something for, but i didn’t spend a lot of time working on it haha. if you want to see what it’s about here’s a copied version from my notes below:
A middle aged man tries to follow the path of his grandfather trying to make a time machine to make himself feel better after the death of his grandpa who he thinks is his fault he died. [idk what the reason is yet] his wife divorced him because the man was always working and didn’t spend time with her. the kids went with the mom. occasionally, the mom will come over to see her ex-husband to see if he’s doing okay (because she still loves him and cares about him). The man’s kids want him to stop working and they try all they can to make him take a break. As the story goes on, the kids teaches him lessons and eventually, he stops working and takes a break.
I think you should write that story. You could post it here on YT.

In the last year I visited my grandmother once every Friday, and we had a lot of really interesting things to talk about and share (she is probably the first person in my family with whom I share my passions, characters and stories)
Learned a lot of unexpected things about her as well, both she and her father were engineers back in Soviet Union, and it turns out that I am currently studying at the same university as she did, and this is honestly fascinating, I have noticed that we have so much in common!
Obviously I have a lot of similarities with my father as well, but I am really proud that his positive attitude and a bit of a rebellious spirit lives in me! Honestly, I am surprised that none in our family was a musician, especially my father, he just had the perfect style and aura. Although, I did learn that he used to paint a little bit back in his 20s, and I am currently teasing him a bit that he should give it a try again
I love how the flowers on the left page at 2:12 are clearly his rendition of the same flowers the woman was painting in the previous drawing. Very much enjoyed this, thank you for sharing.
That’s well-maintained for a 100 year old sketchbook. Mine’s 2 years old and is already disintegrating.

I think there's a huge difference between a diary and fragmented drawings. Also, comparing Kurt Cobain to a total stranger's granddad seems like comparing apples and windows.
In a way, I understand what you mean. I feel comfortable in sharing it with the whole world though, because only I in here know how he looked, how he smelled and how he talked.

This gives me hope. I'm thinking that my drawings are so basic because I drew one thing that came to my mind. But your granddad drew everything he experienced. And man those last drawings (the soldier sleeping, the cows, the gas mask man) were on point.

Its so cool to see this because my great grandmother was born in 1932. She's still alive, but my great grandfather died in 2002. He was in the Korean War and WW1.

I started journaling at 14 and now they are more than 30 years old. 100 years ago seems very far but actually time flies.
Wish I had more of the original art my relatives made. My grandmother did beautiful paintings. I only have some photos of them though. She did beautiful horse paintings. I have some crochet she did, and one small painting of a palm tree. My uncle on the Nielsen side who died several years before I was born was an artist and also made puppets and had puppet shows. My aunt Joy Nielsen used to send me letters with funny little drawings in them. I still have a few of them. My brother was a commercial artist. And I love to draw and paint. Animals mostly. Good thing you have his sketchbook.
