gideon went bankrupt after attempts at making a larp shop . then he stole money off customers and had to pay it back when he didnt supply goods and had to pay it back when courts were threatened
This is really well produced, and It's good to see you have put yourself out of your comfort zone, to investigate more into the subject, a very well made, and well thought out video, it's great you've chosen a subject that is possibly very unknown to a lot of people. very enjoyable!
The larp I attend is so much more put together and deep than these ones seem. We have a huge plot of forest and fields out in the middle of nowhere so you cant see civilization around you and you can get fully immersed in the world. Our typical weekly events host over 150 people with story lines and NPCs. Our days are full of fighting and our nights are full of mead and song. I've always heard larps in Europe are so much more than Canadian larps but maybe I'm just lucky.
Wyvern's Tales is not a good example of a LARP in the UK. I have attended a few events and it's very substandard. Poor costume. Members with ego issues. Surprised this group was chosen to represent LARP if I'm honest.
nice video Ray! i myself am looking if i can join any LARPing events in The Netherlands. i currently have one event in sight called Terra X , but i still need my costume , story , weapons and such :P i can't wait to go LARPing
Im a twelve year old and my first larping event was when I was 10 I was a fairy mpc that went around giving out candy that will kill you or not and now since im twelve I have a character her name is prim im a barbarian I was abandond in the graveyard and a character named shatare found me and now my best battle tactic is to run behing everyone sneak off and hug a tree out of site until the battle is over then I help heal everyone up
+gabs maso Very cool that you're already RPing. I assume it's your parents who got you into it, or something, maybe even your friends or family members. I wish I had that luxury, being able to get into roleplaying games is much easier to do when younger I would think.
I really like your open and interested interview style, it really comes off well on camera. You were good for a first-time player - all of us tend to not quite know what we're doing the first time. :) Hope you enjoyed yourself!
Ray I can see you doing this big time in future- you're a great filmmaker, but there's something about your unassuming interview style that brings out the best in people. You remind me of Louis Theroux. And that's a good thing!
This is brilliant -- I've just got into LARP this term, and it's great to see it being portrayed as something more than a load of nerds hitting each other with foam weapons. I mean, it *is* that, but it's so much fun! Heisenberg is an awesome name. Are you planning on continuing playing? Making a distinct personality for a character gets easier over time -- I've only been playing a few months and I've settled into my character quite well.
Not my cup of tea...but I've watched a few LARP clips & it looks fun...nothing wrong with whatever kinda fun as long as ppl are safe....do what makes you happy!!
Just a bit of constructive criticism here.. When doing your interviews and your narration you should try speaking up a bit mate. You seem a bit timid and quiet when you are speaking, which makes you quite difficult to hear... well it least for me that is. Speaking with a little more volume and confidence would make your documentary even more enjoyable and entertaining.. though I did enjoy it as it was.
My first time RPing (I've never done LARPing, but I play D&D) I actually was in a group that took the RP more seriously as well. I, too, was a bit shy. Wrapping your head around everything all at once AND thinking of lines isn't the easiest thing in the world to do, especially on Day One. I found a group that was more patient though and that made all the difference in the world, since this is easier to do with people you are comfortable around, but different groups of players value different things, ranging from taking the RP lightly to taking it VERY seriously. I like to do as well as I can and try to get in the mind of my characters, but it's not just a big rigid bore-fest where every fighter has to be loud and boisterous, like these guys said they _all_ have to be. The name was a bit strange, though, since I guess most people immediately thought of Breaking Bad lol but otherwise I personally thought you did well.
Okay, I've got to admit. I'm totally cool about stuff like this. I mean, I'm up for dressing up, and I'm ALWAYS up for a good sword fight, but this, THIS was painful to watch. Like literally, painful.
+Bee G. Well, I wrote my comment two months ago, and even tho the chances were low that I would remember what I was feeling and thinking when I wrote my initial comment I rewatched the entire video to try and trigger the memory and the pain, just for you. =) I have to admit that I have brain cancer and I had major brain surgery where they removed about a quarter of one of the frontal lobes of my brain, so memory is not a strong suit of mine any longer. Even tho I rewatched the video I was unable to remember exactly what I was feeling at the time of my comment. I will say this, however... I did feel extremely uncomfortable watching the video again. I'm not sure why, if it was because of their choice of venues, or the fact that I'm more of a rein actor rather than a LARPer myself, and I like to fight full out and it made me laugh, the way they were play fighting. All of these things together did make me feel like I was going into a seizure aura (not an uncommon thing for me - like I said earlier, I have brain cancer) and that is physically painful. Perhaps this happened to me three months ago too, and that's what I was referring to. That's my best guess.
***** I know I know. It's just that it's so silly since.. you know, that famous scientist was called Heisenberg.. and Breaking bad, of course. Cool video, though.
id totally get into larping if it was in a realistic medieval setting without magic. Like reenactments of actual battles and shit would be really immersive for me.
if you want to do seriously LARPing go to the Drachenfest or Conquest of Mythodea, in Germany. It's the top of the LARP that you can find around the world! If you want I can give you more information about it ;)
+Lizard84 Whether DF and CoM are the "top of LARP" is highly debatable. Impressive, sure, but in terms of game mechanics stuck in the early 2000s. Due to being large, (inter-)national events they are geared towards being open to anybody - and it shows. IMHO you'll find more immersion at select smaller events, or for a few years now at the third-largest LARP in Germany: Epic Empires. And I say that after happily participating at Drachenfest for 9 years.
im 13 and im gonna start larp and im going to be a poor thief. Heres his back story the young boys family was extremely poor but where honnorable people ( Didnt steal or do bad things) the boy thought he could help out. So (not knowing it was wrong) he began to steal food clothes etc. but his family became suspicious and notice he had a lot of money. so they watched him and noticed he began stealing. his family told him to stop and he wanted to but one thing happened , he became addicted. His father noticed he continued and banished him from the family. Not having any family he ran to another town and stole stuff to survive. over the course of a year he began to become unnoticable.to this day he continues....
Yeah, but Amtgard is really more battlegaming than actual LARPing. It's more focused on the combat, while LARP is focused on developing your character, upping your stats, telling a narrative, etc.
Larping is absolutely amazing~ I've been doing it for a few months now~ I roleplay a young Elven apprentice sorcerer named Folen in a clan called "The Dragon Mark" of the world of Vantacor~
I used to make fun of people who larped, until a friend convinced me to go. On behalf of all douchebags, i apologize! That was the MOST fun i had in a long time!
I've participated in and out of the SCA in the states for a number of years. Have known about LARP but never did it. There's lots of antagonism between the two groups, and after watching a few UA-cams, it seems pretty unfounded. SCAdians will bitch that LARP is all cheap crappy fantasy costumes and goofy magic gaming. It seems to be far more than than, actually. Looks like lots of LARPers go to extreme lengths for persona development and garb. But like any hobby, it all depends on what you put into it. The converse is also true in SCA. For every expertly tailored Elizabethan gown or hand-stiched 14th century cotehardie, there are a thousand shitty tunics worn over baggy cotton trousers.
SCA and larp shouldnt even be compared.they are two different things, and when an SCA complains bout magic and realism i say to them HEMA thats the real thing SCA is just a wattered down version of HEMA, then they ussually stop being such dicks
I often attend SCA practise fights and attend a local club. And since my city is HEAVY on larp, roleplay and tabletop miniature gaming and all sorts of nerdy stuff (by which all i do and enjoy) it is no chock, that many of the people at that SCA club, are also larpers. I myself find that both are really fun. But you have to approach them with different mindsets. And even after that, there is a bit of larping in SCA as well. Since SCA has personas, they have kingdoms, they have knightings and they have fights with safety-modified weapons. It's just that the level you portray a character is so much more important in larp, that SCA people might find it weird. And odd stats for your character may seem strange (i myself do as well, and i'm a larper) and they are. But it's part of the culture. For a larper, SCA is strange in many respects. But there should be no need for the two to feel animosity against another. The focus is on different things but overall, much is the same. And as long as you respect the differences i say attend both. Double the fun!

same thing where i live
Warthong that sounds awesome
Hmm... Huge plot of forest and fields... Canadian... Bit of a long shot but to the pain?
Wyvern's Tales is not a good example of a LARP in the UK. I have attended a few events and it's very substandard. Poor costume. Members with ego issues. Surprised this group was chosen to represent LARP if I'm honest.
Not to mention broken rules.
the creativity is the limit. And money XD
Great video. Bad LARP system
I don't like people who say "LARPing is weird". People who LARP are creative and social and in nature. What's wrong with that? NOTHING
They dress up and play, that's what make people see it weird.
ForeskinMan
Those who judge see this as weird. We shouldn't judge others till we get to know them.
Tristan silverwolf that's not how people of this planet works.
ForeskinMan I know, that's why humanity SUCKS
Tristan silverwolf humanity is awesome get out more and you'll see.
one day i will larp.... one day.
Whats the hold up? If you want to LARP just do it!
no people, here that larp, or a larp near me....
and i have asked around my city.
so glad you got to do it!
Really impressive, Ray!
I really like your sketches, but this documentary is a whole other level :)
LARP = acting and storytelling at the same time. People who diss larping should not be allowed to watch television, films or even play videogames.
c
this was so funny and professional at the same time!
Great work Ray, Really enjoyed this little documentary.
nice video Ray! i myself am looking if i can join any LARPing events in The Netherlands. i currently have one event in sight called Terra X , but i still need my costume , story , weapons and such :P
i can't wait to go LARPing
I get so excited when you film something in Southampton :D I can't believe I've never walked past you when you're here!
Good film mate. Love how you managed to make a lot of the fights at the Hobbit look good even if we did rig the whole thing.

+gabs maso That is cute. Stay clear of bronies. Have a nice life.
gabs maso omg! i would love to larp with you! im also 12 btw! please reply i would like to talk to you
That's a really well done professional looking piece of work there Ray. Be proud.
omg Its the "comic book guy" !
I really like your open and interested interview style, it really comes off well on camera. You were good for a first-time player - all of us tend to not quite know what we're doing the first time. :) Hope you enjoyed yourself!
THAT RAY GUY SEEMS LIKE A RIGHT LARP
Great doc. I love that you got away with 'Heinsenberg' without anyone noticing (I think)!
Ray I can see you doing this big time in future- you're a great filmmaker, but there's something about your unassuming interview style that brings out the best in people. You remind me of Louis Theroux. And that's a good thing!
Gideon the adulterer 😅
if someone was playing the guitar like that at the larp event on acoustic .. hell yea ..
Very professional, loved it. Very interesting, very engaging, very enjoyable :)
Still a classic
this was good, had never heard of larping before, great documentary!
I work at that pub, I had no idea there was a larp event that happened there!
i wish to take part in some larping...it looks fun...
Never heard of LARPing before, but it's really quite interesting ^_^ Lovely documentary!
Hey that guy with the pony tail on the shop came out in regular show !
Ray I actually love you!
Interesting video, good job.
This was brilliant, well made, well presented, well edited. Well done Ray, can't wait to see whats in store for years to come :D
Picked the wrong lrp. I heard gideon ripped off people recently an his business failed. Good video though
would have liked a little wrap up conclusion ptc at the end. but pretty good.
Yea playing in a public park sucked, I love how are group now leased thier own land,
Ray your voice over sounds amazing for documentaries with a decent mic you could be on the bbc
Not my cup of tea...but I've watched a few LARP clips & it looks fun...nothing wrong with whatever kinda fun as long as ppl are safe....do what makes you happy!!
On 6:46, one of those costumes appear large. Now, I'd love to be using a giant costume such as he does, but how do you do that?
Private Guy with quite a bit of work
Interesting way of explaining the hobby.
The music was a bit loud in the background
Just a bit of constructive criticism here.. When doing your interviews and your narration you should try speaking up a bit mate. You seem a bit timid and quiet when you are speaking, which makes you quite difficult to hear... well it least for me that is.

to be honest i do this all the time but without the costumes i didnt know it had a name
Okay, I've got to admit. I'm totally cool about stuff like this. I mean, I'm up for dressing up, and I'm ALWAYS up for a good sword fight, but this, THIS was painful to watch. Like literally, painful.

+911ambulancegirl thx for the paragraph
Heisenberg? Out of all the names you could have chosen you chose a scientist as a warrior's name?
***** I know I know. It's just that it's so silly since.. you know, that famous scientist was called Heisenberg.. and Breaking bad, of course. Cool video, though.
***** You're forgiven, Heisenberg. :)
Perhaps, toward the choice of name he was feeling...*apply sunglasses*...uncertain. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!
cool video, im going to create a role playing youtube game, think i'll play a talented young filmmaker - i'll call him ray :D x
id totally get into larping if it was in a realistic medieval setting without magic. Like reenactments of actual battles and shit would be really immersive for me.
Non-magic larps are actually fairly common, although it's easier to find "low-magic" larps.
He was so shy loll
if you want to do seriously LARPing go to the Drachenfest or Conquest of Mythodea, in Germany.
It's the top of the LARP that you can find around the world!
If you want I can give you more information about it ;)
anything in the ol USA u no of friend
DicKloadaLOVE I did not understand anything of what you have written, sorry ^^'

10:04
this shield is RIDICULOUS and is completely useless in reality
dor however larping isn't about reality
yea i guess
''your name sounds german, so you would probably be a vicking -_-
"Heissenberg sounds German. Making you probably a viking."
Did you name you name your character Heisenburg after Breaking Bad? xD
im 13 and im gonna start larp and im going to be a poor thief. Heres his back story
the young boys family was extremely poor but where honnorable people ( Didnt steal or do bad things) the boy thought he could help out. the character he created would have been cool for like a comic book character :P
what about Minds Eye Society :(
Should look into Amtgard.. its a lot faster and you don't have to hold back on your strikes.. our swords are made to actually strike..
Yeah, but Amtgard is really more battlegaming than actual LARPing. It's more focused on the combat, while LARP is focused on developing your character, upping your stats, telling a narrative, etc.
+Michael Welsh (Femoman) Plenty of LARPs are not geared towards "upping your stats", on account of them having none. ;)
Haha love this!
My boyfriend does this. He is in Jackson this weekend. I'm going worth him next month..yay!
I was smiling for the whole thing, especialy from 9:15 - 10:30
Not a bad intro. Now go back and kick some ass!
Larping is absolutely amazing~
I've been doing it for a few months now~
I roleplay a young Elven apprentice sorcerer named Folen in a clan called "The Dragon Mark" of the world of Vantacor~
Dude can’t put on a shirt
It would be nice if this group of LARPers knew how to use their weapons and shields...
Heizenberg, the Beardless
I want to sword fight so badly
dirtycommtroop HEMA
Yeah. HEMA or SCA
I love larp and have done it for years - but this made me sad - sorry. It was 11 years ago and lost have changed ....costume quality etc.
someone likes breaking bad
Make a spn larp
I used to make fun of people who larped, until a friend convinced me to go.

correction: Celtic warriors dont wear clothes or even have a shield
Huh. He's a leftie. You know that's a free win in most circles.
OXY 10 on your FACE dude.... JS
Scandinavian LARP is cooler, though... Just saying. More attendants and all. :)
worst player in the world mr. heisenberg!!! never ben to a improvisation theater?? standing there like a 5 year old who is looking for his mom.
artschool well then
Probably best to focus on Gideon who is a conman
These guys are heaps better than American LARPers.
