    Excellent content as always Mr. Heilbron. I don't believe I have mentioned before now, but it was your review of the Nikon D500 that gave me the best analysis to not only decide to purchase the camera, but to get so much more out of it in terms of navigating the menus and so on. I watch all your videos no matter the brand even though I shoot Nikon, because of your attention to detail and obvious understanding of the technology both in terms of where it is now and where it came from. So, although I have thanked you for your content in the past let me take the opportunity to say thanks for helping me to become a better photographer and videographer in sharing your understanding of the discipline.

    Maarten, your channel is becoming my reference channel for anything related to the Z series cameras. Thanks for your useful informations and professional videos, really, an excellent work. I own a number of cameras (Nikon D610, D750, Fuji X-PRO2 and X-T3, Canon 5D MKIII, a number of good lenses too, ...) included the Z6 I bought a few months ago. I am using Lightroom Classic CC v8.3 (still on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 on a mid 2011 iMac), I recently updated the camera profiles to the V2 versions from Adobe (mistake with the white balance interpretation when importing a NEF into Classic CC). This morning, while stuck at home with that awful Covid-19 virus, I played a couple of hours in my garden and around the house with the Z6. I am working only in NEF / RAW files, RAW lossless compression, sRGB color profile, no active d-lighting (OFF), very basic settings... And I still cannot find the way to have that proper blue sky you have up above the Royal Ontario Museum on that video. With those V2 camera profiles skies are always a bit on the pinky side and I don't like it that much, things are better when I use the Adobe Color or Adobe Standard V2 profile inside Lightroom CC. Could you tell me what is your own developing process ? The blue skies on your Flickr page are what I wanted to have myself, I surely missed something somewhere but I can't really telling what is wrong. Maybe a new iMac with the latest MacOS Catalina and the latest Lightroom Classic CC will help ? Regards from Belgium, cheers.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 роки тому

      So sorry to hear you've caught the virus, and I hope that your recovery is fast and complete.
      It's typically not the process, it's the sky - it's not always as blue as it appears. To improve (deepen) the sky, expose down, keeping the sky under 90% (away from the right). Highlight metering can help. Or just underexpose - according to the matrix meter, all of those shots are at least 1 stop underexposed. And even though I used identical settings on the same camera, and these are all out of camera settings with the standard profile, the two lenses provided slightly different results - which I attribute to the lack of equivalence in F stops (as I said, an F stop is the size of the aperture, the more accurate T (transmission stop) measures the amount of light passed.
      Hope this helps.
      Please say hello to all my friends in Belgium once the isolation is over.

    This was a very informative video. I have a couple of Z mount lenses and a whole raft of F mounts used with my D500. I find with the adapter, I can use most with satisfactory results and while the Z series is best for my camera, the lenses are still very expensive to buy unless one can write them off as a business expense but I'm not a professional and am retired. It took me awhile to go to a Z series camera and I opted for the Z50 as it suits most of my needs (plus I have the D500). It's a sweet camera and the more I use it, the more I like it.

    Very comprehensive Z lens introduction, I am a long term Nikon F user and I was hesitate to move to Z Cameras due to high Z lens prices. My recent search found that the Nikkor Z85mm F/1.8S outperform all current Nikkor 85 and even the latest 105mm F/1.4 lenses (I don't like Sigma which are too heavy). So, the better lens quality for F/1.8 is still an affordable solution if I shall upgrade my cameras. Thank you again!

      @@MaartenHeilbron I want to have the best 85mm Z lens for my Pre-Wedding Photography, I'm currently using D750+ 85mm/F1.8D lens. The Nikkor 85mm F1.4 or F1.8G are not a much better lens than mine. Other better portrait lenses are the Nikkor 105mm F1.4 and Sigma, but they are too heavy and expensive. Then, I search that Nikon did a fundamental new designs for all Z lenses, which are more costly, still, the F1.8 Z lenses are affordable to me.

    You have a way with words to explain technical specs and features for easier understanding. Your reviews are the best on you tube. I have a question for you. So I am hesitating between the 20 mm 1.8 (although I expect delay with the Corona virus) and the 14-30 f4. I tried using my 50mm 1.8 G lens on my Z7 but I found the focus was not as accurate as my 24-70 F4 Z lens. I was shooting portraits with eye detection, and my success rate with the F4 lens was noticebly better. Have you found this with the FTZ adapter F lens combination?

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I don't really have a lot of experience with the FTZ adapter - as I had the Z lenses, I only shot with it to create some comparisons. I thought the adapter worked as well as any adapter, but as I said, it's never the equal of native glass.
      If the focus is always similarly/slightly off, there are settings to compensate for that.

I am a Nikon since many years (D7100, Sigma 18-35 f/1.8), and I am interested in a full frame format camera as to be my 1st one. I mostly do street photography, portraits, travel, etc. Do you recommend the Z6 over the D780? I pretend to keep my crop sensor D7100 as well. Thanks in advance for your advice!

    Nice vid lots of detail. I own many many gold ring f-mount lenses and take my D6 and D850s when I go on safari. While I own a Z7 I use an FTZ to allow me to use my f-mount lenses on it. Today I bought the first 2 S-mount lenses. The 40/2 and the 24-70/2.8. I will add a 70-200/s when it is available. This decision followed my ordering a pair of Z9s last week and a pair of FTZ-IIs. Having read the development announcement for the 400/2.8S I am looking forward to buying one when it is released. The 600/4S will replace my current E-FL version. This will mark my shift to purely mirrorless shooting when I go to Kenya (assuming the system works well) otherwise I will continue to use my f-mount gear. I have no plans to replace any of my other f-mount lenses - they are not used for action or sport or I use the focal length rarely.

    I have a basic question on choosing between 24-70 F2.8 vs. F4 lenses: An F2.8 lens is said to give an an extra stop of light, but the depth of field is significantly reduced at F2.8. So this added benefit is not really useful if we desire a deeper depth of field. Is this correct?

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    Evening Maarten. I'm a big fan of your channel. Some of the most knowledgeable reviews on all of YT. I've watched/read every review of both the 24-70 f4 and the 50 f1.8. On the verge of a Z6 purchase. I'm a hobbyist going to FF for the first time. I will definitely get the FTZ adapter for my f mount super-telephoto as I love wildlife photography. I've read that the 24-70 gets autocorrected in Light Room (some sort of agreement with Nikon). If you don't use LR is it better to get the 50 mm? I've seen no mention of it requiring CA and vignette issues that need this auto correction in post processing. I'm looking for a general purpose lens.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words. Lightroom has specific support for many lenses for many manufacturers, typically the changes are minor - mostly vignette correction. This is useful only for RAW, as these are adjustments that Nikon already bakes into their JPEG images. Both are good lenses - are you looking for a variable focal length or a larger aperture?

      @@MaartenHeilbron that's the next question. My current aps-c camera is 10 yo and produces unusable images at ISO above 1000. I'd love to try astrophotography so the big aperture appeals. I do a bit of landscape so later in the golden hour at twilight or even blue hour I'd like to get more correct in the camera and rely less on ISO even though I've read the Z6 is a low light performer. But general walking around e.g. on vacation the zoom gives versatility but with less moving parts I think the prime will be more durable long term. They haven't been around long enough to say the extra twist in the kit 24-70 will end up an issue. I have 2 wide angle DX lenses I'd like to try out (if they don't work out I believe I'd trade both in for something else but that's another set of decisions LOL). As a kit lens they are basically the same price but if I want the 24-70 later it jumps from C$800 to C$1250. So if you can't tell yet I'm stuck in a bit of a "paralysis by analysis". As a recent convert to the Nikon Z System from the Fujifilm X-System (APS-C), my main reason for the switch is that I often print very large (30" x 40"), and while I was generally pleased with the sharpness and overall image quality I was getting with the Fuji kit, I found my wanting even better sharpness and detail in large prints. The Nikon Z7 with the awesome Nikkor S lenses (and the FTZ Adapted F NIkkors such as the Nikkor AF-P 70 - 300 f/4.5-5.6) fill the bill quite nicely! A question please...Have you noticed any difference in the sharpness level of each lens at say, f/8? One reason I went with the Nikkor S 50 f/1.8 (while also using the Nikkor S 24 - 70 f/4, is the glowing reviews I've read on the Nikkor S 50 f/1.8, some comparing it favorably to even the $5,000 Zeiss Otus, in terms of image sharpness! Nikon has the shortest 16mm flange focal distance and the larger thread diameter(threat) 55mm of of all APS-C and full frame cameras. That's gives Nikon an advantage.
    Also with the very short flange focal distance Nixon Z mount cameras can accept Sony e-mount lenses with the Techart autofocus E to Z mount adapter. Users of Nikon Z mount cameras can attach E-mount lenses without loosing autofocus or focus to infinity.

    Only one of my Nikon F lens with autofocus can use it via adapter with Autofocus on Z6. Sigma 24-70 2.8 cant use AF, Tamron 17-50 also cant. Just 50mm 1.4 Nikkor can use it, so to use Autofocus I should buy new Z mount lens :( Prime 2.8 is too expensive for me, so kit lens for now is best choice. And most sad is that Sony A7m3 can use both of my Lenses with AF with cheap Viltrox NF-E adapter, that is two times cheaper than FTZ. Nikon Z6 is very nice camera, better than A7m3, but AF features cant be used with non-nikon F lenses, also Sigma Art lenses, this situation is not good :(

    The primes are still huge compared to their excellent predecessors. Is this tendency for lenses and cameras to keep getting larger inevitable? I don't like it. My OM4 with a 50mm 1.4 feels like a snowflake in comparison.

    The new lenses are in general heavier than their ancestors. I prefer a sturdy camera and light short lenses; for me it's a joke that a 1.8/50 weighs such a lot - it could remain below 200 g (of course NOT with so much digital gimmicks). That's why I continue with DSLR, sans miroir will never become my choice.

      Falguer Morganson Nope not much difference. That doesn’t mean no difference but not much. The quality I get from my 24-70, 70-200 current model and several primes are brilliant. The difference between the F mount I use and the new Z mount is mostly just pixel peeping differences, or printing very large. I would only switch to Z lenses for video, which doesn’t interest me.

    • @OmarFadul
      @OmarFadul 4 роки тому

      Yeah! Basically, no difference! There is a company trying to sell new things they are producing. I think if the camera brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, etc) decide to change into a new "New system" today, these youtube guys would buy it immediately and start to make videos telling us to go buy it because the future in here, finally! The switch from film to digital was huge, really! But DSLR x Mirrorless... Just companies trying to sell more stuff. We can take the same pictures with our DSLRs or try to find a way to explain that "the future is here!" I take around 1500 shots with my D500 or D850, but with my Mirrorless Fuji X-T3 I take 250 shots with one battery! with my Sony A7II... Same story And try it in a cold weather... -15, -20 or very hot weather... You will see that my D500 will keep going a 1000 plus shots while my Fujis or Sonys will be dead with their promising "future is here"! I think Mirrorless is dead everytime one of these cameras "die" in my hands without power,while the DSLRs keep going very well and alive indeed!

    What am i missing here - why are these lenses so expensive? they look plasticky and dont let through very much light.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 роки тому

      What??? With the large opening they let through more "light" than most. Quality, which includes taking the time to do it right and using the best materials is always expensive. If cost is your only objective, maybe you should consider another brand.

      @@MaartenHeilbron cost isnt my only consideration - its more cost relative for what u get. an 50mm 1.8 doesnt sound extreme exiting to me. i bought a sigma art 50mm 1.4 ef for 500€ used and i ask myself, is this new 50mm s lens better in any way? nikon made such a big thing about their new bigger mount, so i expected more interesting lenses to come out. perhaps a 50mm 1.1 or something like this. they dont look hich quality to me either... so my question was, what am i missing - why are ppl paying so much for these relatively standard lenses?
