@@gmac9987 You seem to have delusions of underwhelming grandeur. You do understand that the acquisitions process and how things get fast tracked at the end of a year or when the military is building up for a conflict spends it's money are a few different things, right? There are programs, joint programs and adopted programs. To fast track an orphaned program they can have the original branch create the thing then simply reimburse the original branch. The marines have a habit of getting hand me downs from other branches. That doesn't just mean second hand gear but templates of gear from other branches as well as surplus.

This isn’t the only time it’s happened this is just one of the most effective. Thanks to MASSIVE Weapon stockpiles sometimes the Military needs to recycle to make room, so they make what is known as Frankenguns. Weapons made by stitching together two or more guns like a Frankenstein Arts and Crafts Project. A few of them have been made and used recently.

My Marine MOS was initially 0351 - AntiTank/Assault. The Ontos MOS was 0353, since the M40 recoilless rifles were used by each specialty. You wanted at least two M40 rifles in the area, since if you missed the tank, it could shoot back faster than you could reload. That back blast told the tank where the M40 was. The 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or 5th or 6th) would shoot before the tank could react.
So, I trained to shoot the M40. The quietest place to be was just to the side of the breech block in the rear where the back blast and muzzle blast cancelled each other. Fun times.

wich is prettys much on brand with the Marines. take a look at what those guys did. they captured multiple ships and a city with 8 Marines. They built the, in my opinion, best LMG of world war 2: the M2 stinger. Marines never leave the house without a fucking grenade machine gun. and their tanks and helicopters are transformers, being the Osprey and the AAV

To understand why the Marines wanted them and why the Army didn't, you have to understand the culture differences between the two services, and those culture differences come from how the services funcion.
The Army is about mass. A lot of regular grunts in the same area, which means you have to have a lot of standardization - you have a low tolerance for fucking around. The Army literally has a concept of grunt-proofing things. (Make it hard to screw up, because you've got so many grunts that a lot of them will screw it up.)
The Marines on the other hand, even the lowest grunt isn't a regular grunt. They're individual super soldiers. They're all hyper trained to be the best at everything and not screw anything up. Instead of fool-proofing the equipment, the Marines fool-proof the grunt. They'd totally give their troops a bunch of experimental weapons and tell them to go experiment, because they're trained to be good at that.

I might have missed it, so sorry if I'm repeating what was already covered... The "Thing" was always the Thing... because the official name, Ontos, is actually Greek for "to be". Consider 'ontology', the study of being. So the M50... was. By name, it existed. It "be". What was it? A thing. No... THE Thing. I guess they could have called it the M50 Prama but that's a little too on the nose.

Mostly cause better shit popped up you gotta think this is a like a ww2-korea era battle tank design modified to serve a new purpose that served as a tank killer and then as an anti personel/anti material vehicle into the 70s by that time we're getting to some of the more modern tanks still in use and we have better vehicles and or infantry level anti material and anti personel equipment basically it was outdated for it's original purposes reused for a secondary purpose and eventually got out classed or out specialized in its new issue and got retired

I was quite impressed with this vehicle when I was a kid, but later I wondered what they were thinking. Not a bazooka and the recoilless rifle is nothing like it. It was meant to be used by infantry as a man portable artillery piece. The worst thing about it is that the crew have to exit the vehicle to reload. Live span on modern battlefield? About 10 seconds. The Marine Corp usually end up with Army cast offs because they are always at the bottom of the funding list. The smaller version of the rifle (57mm) was a favorite of the mujahideen in Afghanistan where it was used as intended to ambush Russian armored columns, and later by the Taliban against American forces.
I like the guy who makes these videos, but he has a mental age of about 8. Pro tip: Never stand behind a recoilless rifle of any caliber, which was why the whole recoilless rifle family was abandoned by the US military and sold off around the world. You get one shot and then everyone on the battlefield knows exactly where you are. Many of them found their way into the hands of various rebel/terrorist groups, and were used as the artillery they didn't have.

The ontos was the best tank of the Vietnam War, because it was small and light, and could go anywhere in the rough terrain. The 105mm recoilless rifles that it mounted could fire tank style rounds, to destroy bunkers, but it's best round was the grape shot. The 6 giant shotguns could clear the jungle so well that enemy forces would retreat as soon as they saw one of these tiny tanks rolling in.
