He had several memorable roles akready, like Titus Pullo in HBO's Rome or the bad guy in RRR. He wasn't an A-list Holywood actor because he was too tall (he often got cast as the big dumb guy) and unlucky in his mid-career casting (The punisher reboot, which would have been his breakout role flopped hard), but you can have a good career without being one.
I'm a big Black Sails fan and when he played Black Beard it literally sent shivers down my spin. Best portrayal of Black Beard and I think similar energy was brought forward for Ashoka. I really wish he had at least been around to have seen the fan's reaction
Yes. Blacksails never gets enough love, and Ray Stevenson was such in incredible part of that show. Baylan’s line “I miss the idea of it, but not the truth” is so similar to Edward Teach’s feeling towards the Pirate Republic on Nassau.
Liev Schreiber would be best, in my opinion. He could easily match the look and physical presence that Ray Stevenson possessed. He could also learn the fighting style and vocal cadence to carry the character of Baylan Skoll. Disney would be well served to approach him with a serious offer.
There's an option of Tales of the Jedi series where Baylan Skoll would be voiced by someone making a good impression of Ray Stevenson and also explored of his backstory as a Jedi pre-Order 66.
Maybe Kevin Mckidd would be willing to do it. He was his counterpart, Lucius Vorenus, in Rome. And he also voiced Fenn Rau in rebels which would be very poetic.

Baylan could find this great darkside power in a Tales of the Jedi. He has to make a sacrifice for this power that deforms him. Then he needs a Vader like mask to live. When he shows up in Ahsoka the recast is less jarring and visually it will be similar to a rematch with Ahsoka and Vader.

Scottish actor who played Dwalin in the Hobbit movies and Dougal MacKenzie in Outlander. He's also done a lot of voice-work for Marvel. He's almost as tall as Ray Stevenson and can do the soft-voiced looming presence, but then get really menancing or explode into action. And he's done a lot of sword work for tv-shows and movies. Plus, probably not as expensive as Sean Bean or Lief Schreiber.

I wonder if Karl Urban would be available. It would likely depend a lot on the filming schedule of "The Boys" but I think he might be able to do this character. Ironically there are likely plenty of actors in SAG that are relative unknowns who could do this role if given the chance at similar or less money than Stevenson did, who would kill their own mom for a chance at such a role and high visibility character. Another actor might be Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

It seems that Baylan, and Shin Hati, were played more like Knight and Squire in Arthurian Legend than as either Jedi or Sith. The clothing styles and armor fit more a knight on a quest such as the search for the Grail. There was a very Shakespearian manner in how he delivered his lines that reminded me of Brian Blessed in Henry V, who would make an excellent choice for the role, except for his age.
Yes, I think they deliberately borrowed from both to indicate his roots in the jedi order but then switched sides and incorporated what he felt was relevant from the sith, his goal is still that of the Jedi but he lost faith in their way of doing things but hes not like the sith since hes not doing this not for personal power, at least not as far as the story shows so far.
Ray Stevenson's passing truly saddens me, as his acting performance as Baylon Skoll was very powerful. Not only does he act like an experienced fallen Jedi from the Republic era, he shows it by his action, facial expression, voice, and body posture. I think Schrieber would probably be the best fit overall for this role, because he looks similar enough that it wouldn't be as visible a change as Glenn, his voice is similar, and as far as I know, he's still in good enough shape to do lightsaber duels well. Glenn's voice and already being familiar with sword use seems like a good fit, but his face is just way more angular compared to Stevenson, and a broader face like his is important to make it easily digestible that it's still the same character. The face is the most recognizable part of Baylan's appearance, so any man replacing him has to look very close to the same. I have to agree Bean is just the perfect replacement for Stevenson if they could get him, because they look more alike than me and my brother, and the only issue would be maybe him having to mimic the accent a little. The height would probably not matter considering how much you can make it look different on a screen. Gimli looks short next to everyone, but Rhys-Davies is a big guy, and they already made Christensen look bigger as Vader, so doing a height adjustment for Bean seems very workable.
One thing I really enjoyed about Ray Stevenson’s performance was the chemistry between him and Ivanna Sakhno, and I know the characters have at least for now gone down their separate paths, but still, I think whoever replaces him needs to be able to recreate that same kind of dynamic with her. WOW the guy had range. I didn't recognize him and until you put picture of all his roles next to each other I didn't realize they were all the same guy. He really embodies the roles where as some actor's it's like that person playing this character but for him it just was the character.
I'd like to see Nick Offerman. Obviously he's american but if he could do the brittish accent, I think he would be a good adition to the Star wars universe. Although I'd like him to have his own role.

It's was indeed a shock as much sad hear of Ray Stevenson passing and with his amazing work embodying Baylan Skoll. And if the do decide give his character a send-off. Choice could be Sean Bean and Liv Schreiber in sort of a 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' type take? Similar to when Heather Ledger pass mid production.
The fact that Ray Stevenson earned way less than he was probably actually worth actually gives me hope for Sean Bean. He is already rich, but think of the franchises already under his belt! I could easily see him taking a major pay cut for the opportunity to join the Star Wars franchise.
I see why people say Liev Schreiber, he and Stevenson do have a similar performance style now that i think of it. just put him in beards and i think he would deliver a very similar performance. other Guys like Gerrad Butler, Sean bean have the presence on screen covered but their performance would be different from Stevenson but still great
Being honest, the production did an amazing job in the Casting... as a fan from childhood the characters are so eye catching that I already have the wish to have them figures... Also, in the part of Ray as an actor, I only seen his previous work as the Royal Navy destroyer captain in Das Boot Show, and his work was simply amazing, how he can portray advanced age males with conflictive feelings inside but the guts and presence to stand against the fights... he gives really an admirable presence to these two characters, sad to asume we lost such a great actor... and even more sad for the production, that is the hard thing about having to reeplace a character's actor once they already got the perfect one and viewers already had him in the memory, however, we have seen that a wise decision for the casting could even bring a better performance for the character... we must wait to see what happens next
Another possibility for Baylan moving forward would be his character finds the enigmatic power he was seeking, albeit off-screen. The consequence of obtaining that source of power would be to relinquish his physical form. Like fusion of atoms to form new elements, unleashing powerful energy like the sun. From shadows to starlight. In this transcendence into higher energy state, Baylan inhabits a new form, one that doesn't embody Ray's appearance nor his voice. Perhaps Shin meets her former master in this transformative form. She doesn't recognize him, but implicitly senses his presence.
Assuming Disney and Star wars are still viable over the next 3-5 years , I think the best way is to have him become a background character that is seldom seen on screen and then only briefly, perhaps audio only with an impersontor (ala rick and morty) or the camera could be focused on Shins face with a body double standing behind and lines dubbed over. Then, either once CGI is good enough and with the families permission, bring him back to the forefront or recast him at that point.
Gerald Butler. All candidates were good, and I thought that yeah yeah, it could work, but in the moment you told his name, I felt "that's it." I know that in 300 he mostly played a war beast. But in the peaceful moments, his calm masculinity was really similar to Skoll's.
All good choices, but how about Graham McTavish? He played an imposing Scottish warlord in the tv series Outlander, an imposing supernatural gunslinger in "Preacher" and also a spymaster (not so imposing) in "The Witcher." He's 6'2", strongly built and2 years old and can connivingly wield a Scottish Claymore, so a lightsaber would be easy. He's my pick.
He played the closest thing to a "grey" Jedi that we could get in Canon. His character feels like an aspect of Vader/Anakin in way. I only say that 'cause he reminds me of Dooku, but fought like Vader. Idk, or was it just me? I feel like his character is key to a big change in destiny or fate. My tinfoil hat went down a rabbit hole. It felt like the show implied that he has connection (of the Ones) the Mortis gods? Like, "What if?" he ended up in some time loop or something and becomes the Father (far reach, pulling straws at tinfoil theories); Mortis, is a mystical realm outside of the galaxy's normal time and space. In Rebels, depicted in a painting on the Lothal Jedi Temple, opened a gateway to Ahsoka, saving her; changing her fate and time. What if the sculpture on Peridea, points to something like that? It just seems like his character is important to changing destiny.
I love the character and it's sad about Ray. I want them to do a quick CGI Ray/Baylon getting seriously injured - then the Night Sisters could heal him which could make a plausible reason for a slightly different looking actor.

I can't say I'm a fan of Ahsoka or any Disney Star Wars, except possibly Andor, which I've not watched yet but heard good things about but, seeing as this is just a discussion about who should replace the late Ray Stevenson, I'm going to suggest Craig Fairbrass. He has the look and the stature and, given his recent performance in One Piece, the acting chops to more than carry off the role.

Sean Bean would be too expensive but Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones) would be a good choice. Like you've said, he's from a similar region of the world as Rey Stevenson, they're similarly build, he has experiences with Baylan Skoll's fighting style since it resembles medieval swordsmanship and he's not that famous which means he's not that expensive.
Ray did a phenomenal rendition! He made the series… period! Lord Stark (Sean Bean) would be a perfect replacement or Ian Glen! Either way, great replacement proposals.
This is sooo tough. On one hand, I wish Baylon's story ends with Ray's performance. But on the other hand, I really want to see the rest of Baylon's story. It's tough. A recast is scary cuz who knows if they will do justice to Baylon and Ray. I know there are actors out there who could fill that role, a few actors look like him, many have the skill n love he had, but I dunno. Part of me doesn't want a recast, but part of me does kinda. I would love to see James McAvoy give it a go, he can pull off the English accent very well, he can bulk up (as seen in the Book of Clarence set photos) and he has experiences with big franchises like his dark materials and x men
What I personally like to see them do is just use his standin to flim a couple non dialog scenes of Baylan walking with his hood up to a font of power later revealed to be Abeloth and being absorbed in a puff green smoke/magic. Then having Shin continue the storyline that they obviously had set for Baylan to do.
If Baylan's story is continued, I find the most likely possibility to be that the character will be possessed (Abeloth, The Son, or whoever) and he will be portrayed as taking on that character's appearance. However, if they do choose to go for a straight recast, I could 100% get behind Liev Schriber in the role; I think he is an amazing and underrated actor who could carry on the character in a way that simultaneously honors Ray Stevenson but still makes it his own. A name that came to mind for me was Ray Wise. Yes, he's older than Stevenson was, and notably shorter at 5' 9", but he has a similar enough look and is also a gifted enough actor that I could see it working; he has a similar tone and quality to his voice, and I feel like I've seen him do accents before (though I can't think of where, so I could be mistaken), so I feel like he could pull it off. Another actor that I think could pull off the look for Baylan Skoll is Dennis Quaid; he's one of my favorite actors and he too has a wide dramatic range, the one thing I'm unsure of is his ability to do the accent.
💯 Abeloth is a pretty clean transition for Baylon, if they were already planning to bring her into canon. He frees her from some spiritual/world between worlds prison. She possesses his body and then can just shape shift into new forms.
To be brutally honest, he is my favorite character in Star Wars. So sad. He was a truly gifted actor.

I'd like to see Nick Offerman. Obviously he's american but if he could do the brittish accent, I think he would be a good adition to the Star wars universe. Although I'd like him to have his own role.

Schreiber could be a good alternative, but Butler imo could actually be the one to portray with a less noticeable difference in appearance....

It's was indeed a shock as much sad hear of Ray Stevenson passing and with his amazing work embodying Baylan Skoll. And if the do decide give his character a send-off. Choice could be Sean Bean and Liv Schreiber in sort of a 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' type take? Similar to when Heather Ledger pass mid production.
No one can replace him. They should do a deep fake with a look alike, like they did with Luke recently.

The fact that Ray Stevenson earned way less than he was probably actually worth actually gives me hope for Sean Bean. He is already rich, but think of the franchises already under his belt! I could easily see him taking a major pay cut for the opportunity to join the Star Wars franchise.

I see why people say Liev Schreiber, he and Stevenson do have a similar performance style now that i think of it. just put him in beards and i think he would deliver a very similar performance. other Guys like Gerrad Butler, Sean bean have the presence on screen covered but their performance would be different from Stevenson but still great
Being honest, the production did an amazing job in the Casting... as a fan from childhood the characters are so eye catching that I already have the wish to have them figures... Also, in the part of Ray as an actor, I only seen his previous work as the Royal Navy destroyer captain in Das Boot Show, and his work was simply amazing, how he can portray advanced age males with conflictive feelings inside but the guts and presence to stand against the fights... he gives really an admirable presence to these two characters, sad to asume we lost such a great actor... and even more sad for the production, that is the hard thing about having to reeplace a character's actor once they already got the perfect one and viewers already had him in the memory, however, we have seen that a wise decision for the casting could even bring a better performance for the character... we must wait to see what happens next
How about Clive Standen? He played Rollo in Vikings and looks a lot like Ray Stevenson. He also is big, tall and imposing and has a deep voice.
Another possibility for Baylan moving forward would be his character finds the enigmatic power he was seeking, albeit off-screen. The consequence of obtaining that source of power would be to relinquish his physical form. Like fusion of atoms to form new elements, unleashing powerful energy like the sun. From shadows to starlight. In this transcendence into higher energy state, Baylan inhabits a new form, one that doesn't embody Ray's appearance nor his voice.
Perhaps Shin meets her former master in this transformative form. She doesn't recognize him, but implicitly senses his presence.
Or... Shin finds Baylan's corpse (facing down). To honor the memory of her deceased master, she seeks to finish what Baylan sought.
He came across as a combination Oliver Reed and Richard Harris in Gladiator. it was awesome. I like Sean Bean and Gerard Butler

Assuming Disney and Star wars are still viable over the next 3-5 years , I think the best way is to have him become a background character that is seldom seen on screen and then only briefly, perhaps audio only with an impersontor (ala rick and morty) or the camera could be focused on Shins face with a body double standing behind and lines dubbed over.
Then, either once CGI is good enough and with the families permission, bring him back to the forefront or recast him at that point.
Don't think Sean Bean would be as expensive as you'd think. He been doing a lot more small tv shows recently and even some adverts for tea bags
Several creators didn't recognize the monuments of the Father and the Son at the end of the Ahsoka Season Finale.
Gerald Butler. All candidates were good, and I thought that yeah yeah, it could work, but in the moment you told his name, I felt "that's it."
I know that in 300 he mostly played a war beast. But in the peaceful moments, his calm masculinity was really similar to Skoll's.
I would like to see Anson Mount. Star Trek's Capt Pike: Strange New World, he also played Kevin in Lost. 6'1" 50 yrs old. My wife's fav!😂
All good choices, but how about Graham McTavish? He played an imposing Scottish warlord in the tv series Outlander, an imposing supernatural gunslinger in "Preacher" and also a spymaster (not so imposing) in "The Witcher." He's 6'2", strongly built and2 years old and can connivingly wield a Scottish Claymore, so a lightsaber would be easy. He's my pick.

He played the closest thing to a "grey" Jedi that we could get in Canon. His character feels like an aspect of Vader/Anakin in way. I only say that 'cause he reminds me of Dooku, but fought like Vader. Idk, or was it just me? I feel like his character is key to a big change in destiny or fate. My tinfoil hat went down a rabbit hole. It felt like the show implied that he has connection (of the Ones) the Mortis gods? Like, "What if?" he ended up in some time loop or something and becomes the Father (far reach, pulling straws at tinfoil theories); Mortis, is a mystical realm outside of the galaxy's normal time and space. In Rebels, depicted in a painting on the Lothal Jedi Temple, opened a gateway to Ahsoka, saving her; changing her fate and time. What if the sculpture on Peridea, points to something like that? It just seems like his character is important to changing destiny.
I love the character and it's sad about Ray. I want them to do a quick CGI Ray/Baylon getting seriously injured - then the Night Sisters could heal him which could make a plausible reason for a slightly different looking actor.
I was thinking Vincent Regan who played the vice admiral in One Piece when I watched it at first couple of scenes I wondered if it was Ray. Ray was a fantastic actor. If you get a chance check out Accident Man 1 and 2.
I can't say I'm a fan of Ahsoka or any Disney Star Wars, except possibly Andor, which I've not watched yet but heard good things about but, seeing as this is just a discussion about who should replace the late Ray Stevenson, I'm going to suggest Craig Fairbrass. He has the look and the stature and, given his recent performance in One Piece, the acting chops to more than carry off the role.

Sean Bean would be too expensive but Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones) would be a good choice. Like you've said, he's from a similar region of the world as Rey Stevenson, they're similarly build, he has experiences with Baylan Skoll's fighting style since it resembles medieval swordsmanship and he's not that famous which means he's not that expensive.

This is sooo tough. On one hand, I wish Baylon's story ends with Ray's performance. But on the other hand, I really want to see the rest of Baylon's story. It's tough. A recast is scary cuz who knows if they will do justice to Baylon and Ray. I know there are actors out there who could fill that role, a few actors look like him, many have the skill n love he had, but I dunno. Part of me doesn't want a recast, but part of me does kinda. Am I making any sense? Rest in peace Ray Stevenson. May the force be with you, always. SKÖL!

One idea is that the new actor wears a mask akin to Vader or Kylo Ren.
I would love to see James McAvoy give it a go, he can pull off the English accent very well, he can bulk up (as seen in the Book of Clarence set photos) and he has experiences with big franchises like his dark materials and x men

What I personally like to see them do is just use his standin to flim a couple non dialog scenes of Baylan walking with his hood up to a font of power later revealed to be Abeloth and being absorbed in a puff green smoke/magic. Then having Shin continue the storyline that they obviously had set for Baylan to do.

If Baylan's story is continued, I find the most likely possibility to be that the character will be possessed (Abeloth, The Son, or whoever) and he will be portrayed as taking on that character's appearance. However, if they do choose to go for a straight recast, I could 100% get behind Liev Schriber in the role; I think he is an amazing and underrated actor who could carry on the character in a way that simultaneously honors Ray Stevenson but still makes it his own. A name that came to mind for me was Ray Wise. Yes, he's older than Stevenson was, and notably shorter at 5' 9", but he has a similar enough look and is also a gifted enough actor that I could see it working; he has a similar tone and quality to his voice, and I feel like I've seen him do accents before (though I can't think of where, so I could be mistaken), so I feel like he could pull it off. Another actor that I think could pull off the look for Baylan Skoll is Dennis Quaid; he's one of my favorite actors and he too has a wide dramatic range, the one thing I'm unsure of is his ability to do the accent.
I have an off the wall suggestion for an actor who could still imbue the character with sufficient depth: Pierce Brosnan
💯 Abeloth is a pretty clean transition for Baylon, if they were already planning to bring her into canon. He frees her from some spiritual/world between worlds prison. She possesses his body and then can just shape shift into new forms.
