She may not have been rich, but she had the biggest treasure of all, something neither Queen Victoria or her children had, a happy close family. She could swim well, was an excellent horsewoman and tandem driver, ice skated and hunted. She was a good pianist, could dance and was very sociable. She had a slight hearing problem which her firstborn probably inherited, but that did not stop her from having fun. Neither she or her husband read books and she was a true Christian and faithful to her marriage vows. After developing a limp due to her problem with arthritis in her third pregnancy, it did not stop her walking about using a cane. I saw footage of her in Pathe news in her late seventies, and although she did use a cane she walked at a fast pace and the limp was not noticeable. In her later years she became more deaf, yes probably, but somewhere I read that she deteriorated rapidly. This is pretty normal in old age, and she had been through a lot in her lifetime but was always smiling and hiding her pain. Shortly before her death she came out of retirement, and seemed spright and very normal for an important charity event.
