Poetry by RUMI -- Only Breath

  • Only Breath is one of Rumi's most powerful poems on the Spirit. Here he so clearly shows us that we are all one and inextricably linked to each other even though, through thousands of years, we have been conditioned to believe otherwise. Our true nature transcends race, religion, gender and borders. Looking at our beautiful blue planet from the outside, how can we possibly believe otherwise.
Rūmī was a thirteenth century poet, theologian and mystic. By his mid 20’s he had become an accomplished and highly influential figure in the community. However, a chance meeting with an eccentric dervish by the name of Shams Tabrīz, who was in search of a master student, would cause him to walk away from his life of privilege forever. And the world would never be the same.
    Only Breath
Not Christian or Jew or Muslim,
not Hindu, Buddhist, sufi, or zen.
Not any religion or cultural system.
I am not from the East
    or the West,
    not out of the ocean
    or up from the ground,
    not natural or ethereal.
not composed of elements at all.
    I do not exist,
am not an entity in this world or the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve
    or any origin story.
    My place is the placeless,
    a trace of the traceless.
    Neither body or soul.
    I belong to the beloved,
have seen the two worlds as one
and that one call to and know,
first, last, outer, inner, only that
    breath breathing human being.

@@bernadetteoflaherty2617 I soon after found that Coleman Barks recited the poem in this recording, as I'd known if I'd read the fine print in the info, above. After that I found many UA-cam videos of his performances, plus some interviews. I'm still in love with his voice.

I watch and listen to these words and am moved. Then I read comments from others and
am overcome with sadness. Why can't we just
allow the spirit in the words to move in us? If it does not, move on. Why the hate filled comments?

With out doubt one of the gretest Sufi and this poem fully symbolises what is in his mind. Forget about where's he from and who he was celebrate this amazing thinkers depth of understanding that most of us will never come any where near close to in matching and then show him the respect by following his example.

it is not to be understood with the intellect but with the heart .....the heart that beats in all humanity and that One conciousness and the Source of all beings. Awakening to this knowing no matter the differences of belief or culture ..they are only superficial learning with the mind the Truth of Life that cannot be Believed but experienced arises from the heart. Rumi s words belong to that which transcends the mind.

Rumi is speaking on the formless self. That doesn't have to do with religion, race, politics or education. Rumi is speaking on being the formless. But people's ego's tries to come up with labels to try and name something that is fomless. They try and label thru Reilgion but it can't be named. It can only be experienced thru the individual.
