This phenomenon is called LME (stays for liquid metal embrittlement) and happens when a metal with low fusion temperature (like gallium, mercury, bismuth etc) is poured in another metal or alloy's notch. This liquid metal can reduce the atomic bonding strenght and the result is to change the type of failure from ductile (caused by development of internal microvoids) to brittle (in general intergranular or called cleavage).

It would be funny if the gallium didn't weaken the integrity of the alluminum sheet and he just punched and nothing happened but he starts to scream in pain
unlike mercury, gallium "wets" things, like water (but not as effectively). You can poke a blob of it and put it in your hands and nothing will happen, but if you "pinch" it while it is liquid, then you'll start staining things. It's more of a dark silver than a dark brown. I'd say iIt's easier to clean than motor oil, but more difficult than flour. All that being said, NurdRage wore the gloves because as a chemist, he doesn't want to contaminate anything if he were to have his bare hands. Gallium eats away at a handful of metals.
Nitrates can stain the skin. Silver nitrate in particular stains things a darkish brown to black, and that might be what you heard. Not personal experience with gallium, though a quick search says that prolonged exposure will stain similarly to graphite.
logsforburning I wouldn't say prolonged exposure, but rather rough exposure. So like I said before, you can poke or tap the blob and you shouldn't stain your hands, but pinching it will leave residue. And yes, the residue is very similar to graphite.
I don't have suggestions for perks but will be happy to pay a subscription fee- really missed these videos during the days when the channel went "dark". Happy to hear you're going this way to get some monetary support for your awesome videos.
NurdRage, just the man i need. could you give me a little info on a few things? so i was making hydrogen for fun, doing electrolysis, with 12 volts, to blow it up (yes, im a pyromaniac :D ) using copper electrodes and a salt solution (about 10% of the volume was salt). doing this gave me the desired gas, but for the millionth time, the green stuff was left behind, and for the millionth time i was curious as to what that is, so i did a little research. now this is what i need the info on, to see if my info is correct. so the green stuff is a contaminated form of CuCl (copper chloride)? the green stuff which may be CuCl, was not dissolved in the water, and the water was a little greenish (so im assuming SOME was dissolved) but if that was gotten rid of too, would the clear substance left behind be sodium hydroxide? if so, is there a way to get rid of the hydroxide and have pure sodium left behind? i tried boiling off the water, but all i achieved is a thick coating of white (salt, im assuming, or burned sodium, as the process burned it away) and no sodium... also, if i wanted to make iron oxide, could i simply do electrolysis using pure iron or steel and instead of green stuff, have iron oxide left behind? and if its possible (that im 99% sure is, but im still asking) would i have to chemically wash it to use the iron oxide to make thermite? please, dont be concerned, im not doing this alone, and neither my buddy or i are idiots, we know of the dangers of playing with this stuff, and we know the precautions we have to make and in what conditions we can use them.. we're adults, not stupid kids eager to burn through a car or bow something up :D thanks for ur help in advance!
Probably I'm too late to answer your question but I'll answer it anyway . Yes the green compound you got is most likely copper chloride. Copper is more readily oxidized than oxygen depending on the pH of the solution. If you don't want to have copper chloride in your solution, use a more inert electrode (one with a bigger standard potential, look up the galvanic series). I do NOT recommend doing this, because you would generate chlorine gas instead. And chlorine gas is highly corrosive. The solution you produced was most likely some sort of sodium hydroxide solution. If you were to evaporate all the water from it (which is very hard, as sodium hydroxide is a so called hygroscopic chemical) you would produce sodium hydroxide salt. However you would not be able to extract the sodium out of it, because you would have to reduce the sodium first. Doing so is possible when electrolyzing molten sodium chloride (pure, not a solution). But it's not really feasible from sodium hydroxide. The reason being that sodium is a very strong reducing agent, it fiercely reduced many chemicals like water or organic compounds. However this also means that it is very hard to perform the reverse reaction: the reduction of sodium salt to metallic sodium. Yes, it's possilbe to make iron oxide in aqueous solution by electrolysis. This is how it's done in the lab at least. And you can use this to make thermite reactions. Wikipedia recommends using sodium bicarbonate as electrolyte. This will make it easier, as bicarbonate will make your solution acidic. The iron oxide you get from this still contains crystal water. Be sure to remove it by heating the salt to over 220 °C first. It's extremely dangerous to put water anywhere near strong heat sources. It evaporates instantly and can spread the source of the heat (thermite, burning oil, etc).

im sure you've probably answered this question a bunch of time earlier, but im relatively new to your channel, and i was just wondering.. what's with the voice changer?
its because of galliums molten state. It is simply making an alloy, not actually dissolving anything. Happens that galium makes a poor brittle alloy with aluminum. The same can be done with mercury.
Small fact: Mercury was used in gold mines to dissolve the gold out of the ores. After that they boiled the 'solution', leaving pure gold residue behind.
Fun prank idea: go to your friends car and pour a ton of this over their cars axles and the nuts on the wheels. Laugh your ass off when the car falls apart as they are on the highway.
cool! any chance this could be used a perhaps a movie effect such as someone punching through a metal wall if the camera angle was shot from the back of the metal plate?

"I do not have a Black Belt in Martial Arts but i do have a PhD in Chemistry" I lost my shit when you said that
"just a PHD in chemistry."
I'll trade you my black belt in Karate, and my black belt in TKD for your PHD.
And then the world would become a better place.
0 dislikes as expected from a beast of a video.
Always happy to see new videos from you.
That's some supervillian shit right there. "it's amazing to have something that was stronger than you just crumble in your hands" *insert evil laugh*
"I don't have a black belt in karate, I only have a PhD in chemistry" I died laughing.
2:30 Am I the only one who thinks that is a beautiful quote that can be used in a ton of different ways?
Very cheeky putting your channel name under the piece of metal you punched through.
"Actually quite interesting to have something that was Stronger Than You crumble in your hands" said everyone in history
im sure you've probably answered this question a bunch of time earlier, but im relatively new to your channel, and i was just wondering.. what's with the voice changer?
Never knew such a process existed - a metal that dissolves metal? Bizarre!
its because of galliums molten state. It is simply making an alloy, not actually dissolving anything. Happens that galium makes a poor brittle alloy with aluminum. The same can be done with mercury.
Do you know what happens when two metals collide slowly in space?
Pretty much all metals dissolve in mercury. It's called an amalgam.
Small fact: Mercury was used in gold mines to dissolve the gold out of the ores. After that they boiled the 'solution', leaving pure gold residue behind.
VicariousReality7 Contact welding.
thanks for the amazing videos keep up the good work nurdrage!!!!
I always enjoy your videos!
thanks!
"I do not have a black belt in karate, just a PhD in chemistry" epic.
that is such a dramatic chemical reaction SCIENCE is awesome thank you
Cool !!! Does this work on iron or steel? Or do you need to use another thing instead of gallium?
i jus love this guy... and his Ph.d , and THE VOICE
"I don't have a black belt in martial arts, I just have a PhD in chemistry."
quote of the year
I noticed you cut the glove a bit when you punched the aluminum sheet. I hope you didn't cut yourself! Cool stuff, can't wait to see what's next!
Martial Artist: I can break bricks with my bare hands.
Me: (Pulling out gallium infused metal) Hold my Beer.
That's really cool. Does the reaction create any fumes or other gases?
Fun prank idea: go to your friends car and pour a ton of this over their cars axles and the nuts on the wheels. Laugh your ass off when the car falls apart as they are on the highway.
"I do not have a black belt in martial arts, I just have a phD in chemistry" - I am laughing my ass off.
very cool, thanks for the video! but what happens if you slice yourself to the Bone when you punch through the metal?
That looks amazing. Takes a long time to work, so its out as far as a party trick is concerned.
cool!
any chance this could be used a perhaps a movie effect such as someone punching through a metal wall if the camera angle was shot from the back of the metal plate?
Woah dude! Cool to watch but, does the word lacerations clue some possible dangers in using your bare hands to punch through that metal?
awesome! and thanks for that closed captioning since i don't always like turn up my speakers :P
I love the aluminum and aluminium arguments.
I love that "I don't have a black belt in martial arts, but i do have a PHD in chemistry"
The hand survived while the glove did not. That's superhero shit right there.
Is this his real voice? Or is it modulated? Awesome video.
