  • On 23rd March 2020 the UK Government locked down the nation because of the spread of COVID-19. However, it was probably too late and had a huge effect on Ireland.
The Cheltenham "Festival opened on March 10th with at least 60,000 racegoers in attendance each afternoon, while 68,500 were at the track to see the Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 13th - four days before prime minister Boris Johnson announced extensive UK-wide lockdown measures. It is estimated that 20,000 Irish people travelled over for the festival" (Irish Times, Apr 2, 2020).
On the day I post this over 5 million people around the world have died of COVID-19. To date 140,392 have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus in the UK. In Ireland (excluding Northern Ireland) 5,436 have been recorded to have died of COVID to date. Northern Ireland has reported 2,691 deaths to date, but 3,611 have COVID listed on their death certificate. All of these figures continue to increase each day. Millions in UK and Ireland now suffer from long COVID.
This virus has touched so many people around the world, in the UK and in Ireland. Those who died and the lasting hurt should never be forgot.
This video is of some photos I took on the short walks we were allowed to go on, plus going and coming back from the few essential shops which remained open.
Let us never forget and let's try to never allow it to happen again.
