Unsurpassed to this day. Thanks for uploading, have an old poem: WHEN I play on my fiddle in Dooney, Folk dance like a wave of the sea; My cousin is priest in Kilvarnet, My brother in Moharabuiee.
I passed my brother and cousin: They read in their books of prayer; I read in my book of songs I bought at the Sligo fair.
When we come at the end of time, To Peter sitting in state, He will smile on the three old spirits, But call me first through the gate;
For the good are always the merry, Save by an evil chance, And the merry love the fiddle And the merry love to dance:
And when the folk there spy me, They will all come up to me, With ‘Here is the fiddler of Dooney!’ And dance like a wave of the sea. WB Yeats
Not only 15 minutes of Kevin Burke but a picture of his county Sligo, Ireland and Flemish,I believe Belgian Violin fiddle.Thank You Chris Young an old Fiddler of Albuquerque NM D A E B,E G# B E ( D) ,and for StWilliiam and his Blarney Shamus Innis!!!
A master.....and one of the nicest men that I've ever met!! Just a really great gentleman that also happens to be one of the best fiddlers on earth!! God bless Mr. Burke!!
I remember when I bought this album on vinyl. It was so exciting. You would usually hear a review on The Long Note on RTÉ and that would really whet your appetite. Even the cover was revolutionary for its time. Mulligan Records brought modern graphic design to Irish albums. It’s still one of my favourite covers. Not to mention the incredible playing and arrangements. From the golden age of Irish music.
You don't get better than that. Irish to the hilt. Your music drives me. Your pulse is perfect. Thank you for inspiring me so much Kevin. You are the best. Pete
I’ve spent hours on his reels trying to understand his style, when I back to my feedle it’s seems to be better to change instrument. Kevin Burke, for me #1. I wish... I wish... ona day in the life as Kevin Burke
Forgotten the ti.es of the tunes. What a beautiful legacy, old people facing around the kitchen. Mind the dresser !!! Dear ma cairdre, anseo, jigs and reels, saline na heireann
Kevin has said that he studied classical violin and Irish traditional music at the same time. One characteristic of his playing is that is up bows are just as strong as his down bows, so he often starts tunes on an up bow. That amazing bow technique powers his perfect rhythm and his exquisite tone.
I think it was people listening on their phones. They scrolled too quickly and hit the down thumb by mistake. I've done it at least once myself. Ah sure..
Sometimes you come to youtube looking for something specific. Sometimes you're looking for something general. Regardless of what intentions brought you here, if you're lucky you'll stumble upon a previously unknown gem that sticks with you long term. I think I just stumbled, and I'm not sure I want to get up! : D
Or rediscover something that set yer heart racing 20 years ago and reminds you that your true purpose in life is to play beautiful music. I got this album off my uncle maybe 6 months to a year too late to realise my destiny in life. This and Matt molloys stony steps were two fantastic recordings my wonderful late uncle gave me. My biggest regret in life so far is not getting together and learning tunes from him and jamming with him. I can only ask him to send me them and help me on the spirit level now.
@gillieduncannon You can find them if you buy the CD (which I did long ago). The first and last are the same, "Toss the Feathers". My personal favorite is "The Hunters Purse". It's the bad myxolidian tune towards the end with the pipes. Or just go to the store and look at the CD and write down the name of the tunes. They're all great and some are probably in the Fiddler's Fakebook.
If you are going to bother analysing whether or not he is playing "Toss The Feathers" in the keys of D or Em you are missing the whole point of the track, I would guess

I remember John Peel playing this over several nights on his late show in the '70s, in amongst the punk, new wave and others. Great times.
Fiddling at its finest, love the whole Whom the Cap Fits record.
A master.....and one of the nicest men that I've ever met!! Just a really great gentleman that also happens to be one of the best fiddlers on earth!! God bless Mr. Burke!!
Life can be divided in two periods: before you hear Kevin Burke and after you hear Kevin Burke. Simple as that.
Back in the 70s I loved British and Irish folk music. How the hell did I never hear of this guy? Oh well, better late than never.
For two years back in the early 80s,
i had this on a cassette in my car. Nothing else. No radio.
You hit d nail on head with that statement. Love the crack.
And Then possibly a few guitarists and soloists who had to plug in,so the world beyond into they
Old Chris a retired fiddler of Albuquerque NM
absolutely brilliant.

Sublime in EVERY sense of the word!.
J'écoute cette suite de réels depuis tant d'années et je suis toujours autant transporté par le style de Kevin Burke. Fantastique...
always remembered and appreciated for his contribution to the unsurpassed Bothy Band. A world heritage band if they ever designated such a thing.
Am re-visiting music from past times and this takes my breath away
Will have a Kevin Burke week.
Ireland should have a Kevin Burke week - free holiday for the whole country. He deserves it...
no one plays like Kevin Burke

Could listen to Kevin Burke all day!
A talent blessed by the Divine.
Now this - Kevin Burke's fiddle playing is "supernatural" - about a close to "God" and "The Devil" you can get at one and the same time : < [)...

Magnificent! I always liked this record!!!
16 minutes of brilliance.
Who disliked this???? Amazing.
I play most of my fiddle tunes by ear, god help me when I try to learn one of Kevin Burkes. His style is mind blowing.
I think it was people listening on their phones.
They scrolled too quickly and hit the down thumb by mistake.
I've done it at least once myself.
Ah sure..

I was replying to Furbax's question of what is the reel after Hunter's Purse and before the reprise of Toss The Feathers.
I'd like to see a fiddle b battle between Kevin Burke and Martin Hayes.
With John Sheehan as referee.
And André Rieu as an independent observer.

I believe after The Hunter's Purse he plays two versions of the other Toss The Feathers in D before the one in Em
Could someone time stamp the numbered tracks (1-8)?

Move over Paul McCartney, you've been replaced!

Sounds like a bagpipe
