    This is by far the BEST video tutorial on setting up a FreeNAS home server that I have viewed. After viewing Part I and II, my main question is do you have any estimate when Part III will be available? Thanks for all your help, I would have been really lost trying to set this up without these videos. Great Job!!!

    Very nice video and a very nice and clean build you got there. I just completed building my own FreeNAS box and I'm loving it. For anyone considering this, I definitely recommend going with good server grade (like the parts in the video) or really good consumer grade parts. It will be cheaper in the long run. Trust me ;)

    I look forward to being able to send the links to your videos to friends and colleagues with questions about how to build out what I'm running at home.
    There are quite a number of Dual Xeon 5420 quad core, Dell SC24 1U server boxes on Ebay that can be bought and shipped to any US address for around $150 right now. They are a great platform for this as they come with with up to 24GB of ECC memory, four 3.5 drive slots, dual intel 1g NICs, and a very functional BMC/IPMI card, and a PCI-e slot that can take any modern 6G SAS card (for expanders/JBODS).

    One reason for why motherboard manufacturers like Realtek network cards is that they can use the same solution for both intel and amd motherboards and it is cheaper for them.

    for all the people that have issues with my GIGA pronounciation:
    read loud the following name: GINA. Now ask yourself why you should pronounce the GI in GINA differently from the GI in GIGA. The (wrong) way to prononce the G hard in GIGA come from the germans and started to spread around the world the second world war....if you still have doubt read loud the following words:
    GINGER, GIOVANNI, GINKO, GIN and then think hard at the reason why you didn't thought before at that.

    @Leroy Rondo:
    Gilmore is a English Family name...how you people pronounce it that is your business, GIGA is ancient greek and if your are not ignorant you should pronounce as was pronounced 4000 years ago.
    How you pronounce "gigantic"? mmh? as G of GHANA? 'cause in Italian as you pronounce Gigabyte you should write "GHIGABAIT"
    hard G is written "GH" ...in gigabyte there is no "H" so it needs to be pronounced as in GIGAntic ...simple as that.

    Hi, i like your build very much. What is about power consumption (idle) or WOL capabilities ? (I think here QNAP and Synology nas devices have their greatest advantages ?)

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  10 років тому

      I will talk about power consumption in the 3rd part. This system have more than WOL. It have IPMI. with IPMI you have all the benefits of WOL + Temperature + CPU FAN SPEED, different alarms that can be triggered if somebody open your computer, if the disk are degrading, if the last backup failed, etc....You can even monitor the electricity consumption in real time if you have an UPS connected to your NAS via serial or ethernet

    Great post..thank you for all the information! What if I want more volume. ..say 24 tb? Obviously I need more RAM..but what drives do you suggest?

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  10 років тому

      Well you shoud definively look for another case and keep the same kind of HDD because actually they have at the moment the best quality/price ratio.
      However a case capable to accomodate 24 disks it will be quite expensive....here one:

    What I need to do is prevent users on my LAN to do torrents when ever they want. I want to put a NAS device on my lan that would do two things. First to allow users to log in that add torrents to a torrent client. The second thing that it needs to do is make these users unable to see the files of each other. So I am not sure if it is better to set up some regular server with many virtual machines for each user or use FreeNAS but can it do any of the above? Would it be possible in FreeNAS to prevent regular users change settings settings in it like modifying the torrent client?

    I followed your guide. Everything was working great yesterday, but today I cannot connect to my server. I tried to click on the IPMI iKVM32 file but it will not load (through java) like it did yesterday. I can't access the IPMI or my freenas interface. SUggestions?

      If you've already setup everything before as you mentioned that you were able to access it then simply connect it from any web browser(As long your server is running).

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  8 років тому

      Hello, Stephanie!
      Buying components allow you to save some money, moreover build a computer is fun! However, if you feel that this task is not for you, you can always buy a preassembled system. I suggest you to take a look at the official site freenas.org and purchase a NAS directly from them. Just remember: never use a "normal PC" as a NAS : normal PCs (for games or office applications) aren't well suited for being used as a server....
      Don't hesitate to ask here or at the FREENAS.ORG forum if you have more questions, we are here to help!
      Thanks for watching my video and let me know which NAS you'll buy! :)
      Bye!

  • @patricksul71

  • @stephanusgonsalvus

    So why didn't you use a Xeon ? I couldn't understand.

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  10 років тому +1

      Well I said that if you're gonna use your NAS just for SAMBA (windows sharing) and FTP you don't need a Xeon (too expensive for these simple tasks) . Moreover SAMBA runs on one core so it's more important to choose a cheap processor with high frequency than a multicore that run at low frequencies. Of course if you do multiple SIMULTANEOUS SAMBA transfers than you need to look fast multicore cpus.

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  9 років тому

      Because for doing what we need to do, xeon would be a waste of money....my CPU utilization in the last 12 months never rises over 10% even during multiple simoultaneous reading/writing during a scrub. As I said in the video, if you are NOT compressing your drive (Compression and decompression use a lot pf CPU) then you don't need to buy a Xeon because a 50€ cpu already is more than enough. Does it make sense?

    decent NAS for 1000 €? That seems kinda expensive.

    • @n0pt4u26
      @n0pt4u26  10 років тому +2

      The price Include 4x3.5" 3TB HDD....the price of this NAS without disks is 473€....a mere amount considering other solutions that offer Atom processors and 1GB of RAM for 600-700 dollars...
      Moreover if you will build your own NAS instead of buying one, you will be able to replace faulty components by yourself.
      i saw many times people completely lost after purchasing LACIE or other vendor solutions realizing that they cannot access anymore to their data because they were written in a proprietary format and/or because the NAS that they purchased is not anymore in production and the migration toward another vendor is impossible.
      With FREENAS if you connect your disks to ANY PC with FREENAS installed (DIFFERENT HARDWARE and even DIFFERENT FREENAS version) you will ALWAYS BE in the condition to read and use your data.
      How's that?

    • @slaxplaysgames
      @slaxplaysgames 10 років тому

      Don't get me wrong... I do not prefer buying a pre-built NAS solution... FREENAS is awesome and yea, somehow i didnt really think about all the HDDs. Anyway for home NAS you could go cheaper... but this is what-so pro solution. Great answer tho :)

      Every dictionary of the English language published at least before the '70s will list the soft-g as the *only* pronunciation. My c. 1950 edition of Merriam-Webster's (7th Edition, I believe) is an example. No hard g to be found.Then, the 9th edition of M-W, allows that abominable hard g as a second acceptable pronunciation. The 10th, I fear lists the hard g as the 1st.The trouble is the mass use of that prefix brought on by the computer industry. I used to compare "gyroscope" to this, but then I learned there are few people who actually use a hard g there. There are a few, but not many. Anyway, hearing a hard g with "giga" sounds as awful to me as "guy-roscope".

    moreover: you know why you pronounce giga in gigantic and giga in gigabyte in different ways? because unfortunately you people have a language that doesn't have a clue of the rules of pronunciation of ancient languages and every word of your language is written in a way and pronounced in another. Italian and Russian are probably the two best examples of languages that you pronounce exactly how they are written. English and French (expecially) are the worst ones. I actually heard french people pronounce "Jejér" the Geiger counter for radiations (that we italian pronounce exactly in the way that should be pronounced: Geiger was german and so we pronounce it as germans do)

      I'm sure that you are aware that you cannot use the point ( . ) in youtube video titles.
