Star candies are pronounced "Kon-pay-toe", real sugar candies to nibble during tea (NOT to be put in the tea). Tess is so right about the clsoxlcial commentary on greed and consumerism (with the parents scene). River pollution is also a big problem, hence the stinky sludge monsters garbage, and he became a clean river which is also represented as dragons. Although the Ghibli name was inspired by an Italian plane i think, and was pronounced with a hard "G" like you guys in the video. But Miyazaki thought it was a soft "g", so it is "jib-lee" in Japan and Asia. If he would prefer more serious themes, Nausicaa, Mononoke, and Fireflies. My personal favorite though is Laputa.
This movie also shows how much Chihiro grew up, how independent she became. No face grows up of others' greed. It's one of my favorite movies. Please check When Marnie was here, it's really underrated one of the last Ghibli's movies.
Love the energy you both bring into watching a movie! I'll definitely be sticking around for more reactions :) I'd love a howls moving castle reaction because its one if my all time favorite childhood movies
Hi, I'm about to watch your reaction for the first time right now. In your preview you mentioned the stars that the sprites eat. They are real sugar treats for tea time and they are colourful. Also in Japanese it's pronounced "Ji-Bu-li". Miyazaki named it after a type of plane I think but he may have mispronounced it but in Asia it is known with the soft g pronunciation. Now to watch your reactions😊
@JessAndTess Hi and thanks for your response🥰 in his films, on the blue title card, the phonetics are spelled out in the company name "ジブリ = Ji-Bu-Ri", there's no doubt about the pronunciation✌️🎶
@JessAndTess Hi, they are tasty, and also come in fruit flavours. These are called "Konpeitow" pronounced "Cone Pay Toe". Loved your reactions and looking forward to more😆🍁👍💕✨️
It was very fun to watch your reaction ! Btw, what tiny black creatures ate is konpeito, Japanese sugar candy. I’ve tried once but it was so sweet and good.
Hope you guys check out more! There are so many classics and amazing Ghibli movies! I've watched most of them just recently, and I have loved all of them! I'd definitely recommend Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind. It came out in 1984, before Studio Ghibli was founded. Castle In The Sky came out two years later in 1986 as Studio Ghibli's first movie. However, Nausicaa is still considered their work, and is included in many "Ghibli collections" as all the same people were involved such as Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, Hideaki Anno and Joe Hisaishi. So, all in all, my favorites and most recommended are Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, Castle In The Sky, and Princess Mononoke. Also, as a bit of a change of pace, I'd recommend The Wind Rises, loved that one as well.
@@JessAndTess it's actually a really serious piece based on real life people so don't approach it as purely entertainment or you'll be disappointed/upset
When Sen (Chihiro) and the rest of the Bath House Spirits pull the Bicycle and the trash from the Stink Spirit which turns out to be an injured river god, it was based on an actual real life experience by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki and 10 other people had to pull out a bicycle from a local river that was polluted and once the bicycle and trash were removed, the river eventually became clean again and the fish returned as well. Hopefully you get to react to _Kiki’s Delivery Service_ along with _My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle,_ and _The Boy and the Heron_ but be careful because Studio Ghibli has been notorious on taking down video reactions to their movies due to international copyright, in fact it’s one of the main reasons why there aren’t many reactors doing reactions to the Studio Ghibli films because of copyright, yet surprisingly I still see 1-2 channels specifically Suzy Lu who uploaded reactions to the Studio Ghibli and their reactions weren’t taken down.
It was very difficult to get this video past the automated copyright checks, something to consider if we do additional Ghibli movies. But Tess will be wanting more Ghibli movies for sure.
Im still watching but i love the reactions and Tess's love for the Soot sprites! I have a quiz for you! There are other Ghibli animals that do cross-overs, can you name one of the pairs? Miyazaki was very opposed to CGI but I think it was his son or one of the new Ghibli directors convinced him to try a little, so the statue during the car ride was the very first use of it.
I have an advice for u two guys If u wanna get more viewers I recommend u to watch all of Japanese anime with Eng subs so that u could get more Japanese viewers. (I guess every single video would reach around 50k views easily hahaha) (here ppl hardly understand Eng and they tend not to watch videos with only Eng that’s why I’m telling u😢) And there’s one more reason. we’re proud of our VA so if u guys could enjoy it with Japanese we’d be so happy :)) oh and as u were wondering, in Japan we pronounce the studio’s name like “zibli” not “ghibli” but we really don’t mind either way for real (I didn’t get anything when my bf said ghibli and I was like “wtf r u talking abt” tho😂) anyway pls just enjoy our anime and movies !!
I recommend vampire hunter d bloodlust 2000 and ninja scroll 1993 It’s a good movie and have beautiful Art anime You can watch both movie in dub it’s ok and if you want dark anime I recommend Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen I - Haou no Tamago 2012 There is three part of the movie. This anime really popular among anime fan And please watch this one in Sub It’s a lot better
I don't know if it's just me but I definitely found Chihiro's parents less likeable in the dub. Ofc they make the same mistake in both but something feels different about their intonations and stuff.
also I think you don't have to understand everything about this movie. when we were child, we don't understand many things but still get along like Chihiro. I think that's the charm of this movie. back to the kid's eyes❤ I saw the Totoro in the theater, and children just accepted everything and enjoyed it! also the last part remind me of the Hades and Orpheus, Eurydike's story.😊 great reaction!
@@JessAndTess I get that - I guess I'm over touchy when it comes to foreign films - I'd be fine if they used native Japanese to do the voiceovers so it would at least have that "sound", but dubbed stuff is weird in any other language if it's not done by the originators really. It certainly won't stop me watching any reactions to foreign films though - keep it up :)
The English dub is terrible because whomever made the lines, added some sounds and phrases that weren't in the original movie, making it annoyingly predictable. As if they're assuming viewers are idiots who can't understand the plot without making it more expository (I wonder why 🙄). It's ridiculous, like giving away spoilers about yourself. And let's be real: English-speaking audiences don't use subtitles because most of them are a bunch of lazy people. Everyone in the world can do it, are you guys saying you're incompetent in this matter? I woudn't say the same for many dubbed movies out there, even in the ghibli studio, but spirited away is my favorite and pains me seeing it with such awlful work of dubbing.
You're making a lot of assumptions here. The reason the reaction is with the English dub is due to the way that I edit it to bypass copyright restrictions. If you watch the video you will see that a lot of dialogue is cut-off to make the clips as short as possible. Or that the movie is completely hidden while the audio still plays. These are tactics that I have to use to allow me to upload as much of the movie as possible without it being taken down or blocked entirely. If the movie was in Japanese, it wouldn't make any sense to our audience, which is primarily English speaking, that couldn't see the subtitles due to these editing restrictions. I'm sure you already knew all of this, because you're definitely not "incompetent in this matter".
27:05 - Allow me to introduce you to the works of Makoto Shinkai and his landscapes. It's not a coincidence that one of his films is jokingly referred to as 5 Wallpapers per Second. ;)

What is the best Studio Ghibli movie? We need to know what's next!
Grave of the Fireflies truly one of d best. If u wanna watch it, please watch it in original Japanese language dub.
Tess said the same thing about the original Japanese.
I agree grave of the fireflies next pls...
princess mononoke please!
Castle in the Sky. It's much more linear compared to the other Ghibli movies, and Jess might like it as it has strong Indianna Jones vibes
Not just any kind of water spirit. It's a river spirit. In many Asian myths, rivers are represented as dragons.
For example the four great Rivers in Asia is located in china. The biggest is the Yangtze river. If I'm not mistaken.. 😅
And, the junk is all the stuff dumped into the river by humans
When Chihiro almost looked back before exiting the tunnel, the hair band appears to have protected her.
The train ride is the best part. That calmness after all that has happened is soothing.
Very beautiful!
I was so mad when they edited it out and didn’t say anything about it
@@cxo9378we can't leave in stretches of the movie or it gets flagged for copyright issues. 2-3 seconds max.

The name Ghibli comes from an Italian airplane, as Hayao Miazaki is a big aviation fan

The original Italian word uses a hard G. So I think it's one of those rare instances where both are correct
