I’m Polish and this salad is a must on Christmas menu in Poland. We make it little different no meat at all and we use cucumbers in brine It’s my favorite and remainds me of my childhood. ❤

    • @athelwulfgalland
      @athelwulfgalland Рік тому +4

Cucumbers in a brine is still a pickle! It's just a different way of pickling as it uses brine pickling versus vinegar pickling. 😊
Do you know if the recipe has a long history in Poland or was it something introduced to Poland from Russia during it's period under communist rule? I'm just curious.
My Great-Grandmother fled the territory on her father's orders in the late 1800s because he & her eldest brother were involved in partisan activities against the foreign occupation of the time. She wound up in a small town in the US while her younger sister wound up in Paris France. I don't know of many Polish recipes though.
Her Irish daughter-in-law, my Grandmother, wasn't exactly a great cook to begin with & was perfectly fine with slapping together anything that was edible. My Grandfather only spent time in the kitchen at the table to eat, read the newspaper with his morning coffee, read whatever sporting magazines had arrived that day & work on crossword puzzles.
My Aunt made something she called "Polish Borscht" but it had a vinegary yellow broth, chunks of kielbasa, hard-boiled eggs, potatoes & carrots. I have no idea if it was a real recipe or something she just invented on her own. I doubt it's any sort of "borscht" though, that means beetroot in Russian, doesn't it? We saw no such thing anywhere near the table!

@@athelwulfgalland your aunt made Bialy Borscht or in Polish Bialy Barszcz
. Bialy means white. It's more of an Easter soup using alot of Easter basket ingredients. It's a real recipe, not your aunt's original.
There are variations in ingredients so there is Russian, Ukrainian and Polish Borscht recipes.

@@christinawrobel4869 That's really interesting! Thank you for providing the answer to a question which has been in my mind for over half of my life!
My father & his sister, my Aunt, are no longer of this world. My cousins have scattered to the four winds of the Earth. Some still live but others too have joined those whom have passed before them.
That leaves only my sister & myself who were seated at that table with whom I could share this interesting news. However she was far too young to remember anything about it.
I think I will try to look up a recipe so as to reproduce the Bialy Barszcz broth. I remember the major ingredients but I will see what others typically add to it as well. In this way perhaps my wife, two adult age children & I can sit to a traditional Polish meal.
As an aside, I don't keep much hope for this, but I was wondering if you know much about the origin of different surnames in Poland? While I'm pretty sure I know of the origin of my Great-Grandfather's surname I cannot say the same for my Great-Grandmother's surname.
The name is Lezuchowski & I've been under the impression that this is based on the name of a village, township, county (the equivalent thereof) or region. However I cannot seem to figure out where that would be?

There is a place here in Atlanta, Georgia that sells a lot of meats and other products from Europe (including Russia). They even ship all over the United States. I think they will sell to me the most authentic style of meat. Or I guess I can use something simple from the grocery store. But I will try it. Looks so delicious 😋. We use cut up smoked chicken instead of ham, and also add cooked beets for color and sweetness and diced red onions for added crunch and a hint of spice. When I started my current job over a decade ago, I toyed with the idea of bringing salad olivier to our Christmas office potluck but thought most Americans would likely not like it and made spinach lasagna rolls instead. Imagine my surprise when I saw that an African American colleague brought salad olivier as her contribution to the potluck! We eat the same thing here in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, only we call it "Russian salad". I found so many things in common, and half of them I was not aware before I watched your videos. Very interesting.
Wish you and family all the best. ❤️

In Poland, this salad is just called a vegetable salad. And it is present on a table during any important celebrations such as Easter Eve or Christmas, or any other family gatherings. Apart from all the ingredients you have mentioned, there is no meat added, but we add apples, celery - this white root stuff, and leak or onion. In Slovenia, where they also love it, it is called a French salad and there is no meat, no onion, and no apple, but otherwise all the same as in the Russian version:)

Im from Spain and we know this like "Ensaladilla Rusa" we dont put pickles and instead sausage we put tuna, olives and/or anchovies. Usually we eat this in summer but you can find it as a "tapa" in most of spanish bars.

We cook that too in Romania but we call it boeuf salad (idk why cause we rarely use beef in it, it’s usually a bit of chicken or just no meat). The only difference is that for serving we cover it with a thin layer of mayo and decorate it with slices of egg whites, red peppers, olives, that sort of thing, it looks very festive. I’ve never heard it being called “russian salad” though🙂

I had to think about salad de boeuf aswell, but there are some major differences between the salads (e.g. meat choice) so I think they are different salads on their own... but both salads are really tasty. :D

His reaction was the best part of the video. I was grinning away the whole time watching him come into the frame, rubbing his belly after the first mouthful, complimenting you, asking if you were going to film it and then the discovery that that's exactly what you were doing. Beautiful!!

It looks so interesting. I will definitely try it but I wont add eggs because personally I dont like eggs but I think it would be okay without the eggs right? maybe if you have any suggestions of an alternative to the eggs let me know.
In my culture we dont celebrate christmas or the new year, but that doesn’t mean that we cant try other meals and things from other countries, this meal seems easy and you can find all the ingredients in almost every house, I’ll make sure to try it very soon, thank you for sharing ❤.

I‘m from Austrian and my Girlfriend is from Russia. After 3 years of relationship she has invited me last year to meet her parents and aunt for new year. Nevertheless I couldn’t understand what they talk (little bit english and broken with my polish/russia) i enjoyed the food a lot. Except one salad it was mixed meat with transparent gelatin it was horrible and everyone laughed except her aunt, because she loves it.
Edit: Thanks for the video I'm going to do as surprise for my girlfriend when we live together next year :)
Edit 2: While watching I recognized I know this salad from my polish parents, because they do it exactly same :D

I am from Canada and we call this potato salad. We serve it usually in the summer for parties and gatherings more often than Christmas but I have seen it served at Parties during winter too. We add ham or bacon instead of sausage. I like to add a bit of pickle juice too. ❤ I also do not cook the carrot. I just peel and grate it. Not using too much. Some people add onion but I don’t.

My husband’s mother was from Poland. She made a very similar salad (which I now make) The only difference in her salad was that she added a chopped apple to hers and I don’t think she added the meat. She always just called it a vegetable salad. I loved it because all of the veggies were cut into tiny cubes!
