My first and favorite opera - Madam Butterfly. My music teachers Mom and Dad would take my sister and I to an opera every year or so at a large nearby city. Mom would read the opera summaries to us as Dad drove. Even at age 6 I was able to understand and even though they were in another language, enjoy each opera immensely.
My first opera too. When I was ten or so my parents had the 1952 Renata Tebaldi record of it. I just out of curiosity put it on and started listening in the middle. Just so happened to catch the last few minutes of the love duet Viena la Sera and was so blown away I had tears in my eyes and was shivering! I somehow felt I had a glimpse of adult passion and emotion - a whole secret world ahead of me.
They had to repeatedly ”sotto” for the leggiera. JK, but this role requires a bigger voice. And a smaller and younger looking body! But I’d take a 300 lb woman with a voice to match over a tiny thing with a similarly sized instrument. Her mf sounds more like mp - not good.

This opera awesome, invaluable. I am told about this tragedy when I was a teenager, then I was frightened that I couldn't hear the opera. Now I hear it - a mystery of love, a human experience expressed so beautiful
This was my first ever opera. I had long dreamed of going to one, and, after I got a sat grade that was upseting to me, as it did not appear good enough for my dream college at the us, my mother told me she had won tickets for our family to go to an opera that same day. It was a unique and amazing moment to me. As if the university was signalizing:'dont give up on your dreams yet. Miracles happen.'
Bela montagem!
If you're here because of Online Class, this is the summary of the opera. The opera starts with a US naval officer Pinkerton who rents a house in Nagasaki, Japan, for himself and his soon-to-be wife "Butterfly" she is a 15-year-old Japanese girl whose real name is Cio-Cio-san. He intends to leave her once to find a proper American wife and he did, since Japanese divorce laws are very lax. Three years later after he left, Butterfly is still waiting for Pinkerton to return, as he had left shortly after their wedding. She gives birth to his son and waits for his return. The American consul comes to break the news to her, and Butterfly have to give up her child to her husband's new wife, who has agreed to raise the child. When Pinkerton's ship arrive in the harbour to find Butterfly is waiting for him to return. As he realizes he has made a huge mistake of leaving her, he cannot face her. When butterfly hears the news she then prays to statues of her ancestral gods, says goodbye to her son, and blindfolds him. She places a small American flag in his hands and goes behind a screen, killing herself with her father's seppuku knife. Pinkerton rushes in, but he is too late and Butterfly dies.

This happened to even the best of singers in top opera houses all around the world. Overall, it is still a lovely and sincere interpretation of this classic opera.
Opera provides a musical outlet for our emotions. Art, music and dance as well as good literature, books, films, or other artistic endeavors allow us to reflect, express and therefore understand our emotions better and life in general. Stories help us know that there are others who have experienced similar emotions and can be a way of connecting, coming to terms with strong emotions or life events so that we can heal from the inside out. I pray you will find such healing for whatever you need, Aljane, through the gifts of art and be able to overcome any and all obstacles you may be facing. God bless you.
