  • Dr. Judith Campisi, a professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, focuses her lecture on senescent cells and their role in cancer and aging. She explains how cancer is an age-related disease by describing the many conditions beyond DNA mutations that must generally be met for a malignant tumor to form. Dr. Campisi acknowledges that while cellular senescence is a powerful anti-cancer mechanism and while senescent cells may even play a key role in wound healing, senescent cells can nonetheless cause inflammation in their local environment and actually support the formation of tumors.

she has no answers though, only states problems, i.e. diseases of the 90% chronic type.

Very good talk , her humor and intelligence shine through , although I still sat baffled in lots of places .............. oh well.
At least being in a classroom setting the sound setup was MUCH better than in a lecture hall with rubbish sound and idiots stamping about and getting in front of the projector .

4 billion years of random mutations evolution has created many counterintuitive and complex molecular mechanisms that form and maintain our bodies. To say it's a cluster frack is an insult to cluster fracks. Maybe super intelligent AI will be able to understand it but at that level it will also understand that it's better of without us humans

it boils down to health, health, health. The healthier the organism, the better it can fight and prevent disease, including cancer. Eat your veggies and exercise.

      What was the argument about?

  • @joeschmo5699

Yeah, I'm not buying the hypothesis. You could argue just as easily that younger people are more metabolically fit and therefore avoid cancer. As metabolic health decreases with age, the likelyhood of cancer increases. We are now seeing type 2 diabetes in children and young adults and, guess what, cancers typically associated with aging are occurring in younger and younger people. Hmmmm

Hi Schmo ... we are crossing paths ... But is it clear that Modern Diseases and Driven by SAD ... since there is no known carbohydrate deficiency disease, there is no reason to eat carbs, this is not true of fats and proteins .. as humans are now OverLoaded ... there were no fat people when I was a kid ... Mom was right ... Sardine sandwiches, Pickled cucumber salads, Local farmers, Home cooking and Eat you Veggies ...

I don't think that evolution happens the way most people understand it. Instead of a desire to survive, it might all be due to envieonment and time. - not natural selection in the sense that it's what individuals desire, but something that simply happens due to time.
That genes and what gets picked is "random", but due to time tendencies accumulate.

So ìn other words environment impacts change demand? This is not natural selection but forced adaptations?
