- In autumn, the fascinating forest landscapes in the Siegerland shine in many wonderful colors. From golden October until November, the forests now shine: Anne Willmes hikes over the Rothaarsteig, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany. Part of the 156 km long long-distance hiking trail goes through the Siegerland.
The Siegerland - a good hour's drive southeast of Cologne, in the extreme tip of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Siegen-Wittgenstein district extends over a total of 650 square kilometers and is home to around 300,000 residents. With around 70 percent lush greenery, one of the most forested areas in Germany, the region invites you to go for walks, but also for long hikes. The Rothaarsteig, one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Europe, leads through here. If you don't want to run the 156 kilometers in full, you will find numerous shortcuts and circular hiking trails to the right and left of the climb.
But not only the extensive forests attract tourists to the Siegerland, the region also has a lot to offer architecturally. The dark struts of the symmetrically arranged half-timbered houses have shaped the panorama of downtown Freudenberg since the 17th century. They are referred to by the residents as "old spots", the "spots" describing a settlement in the Middle Ages. Eighty-six black and white pieces of jewelery make up the old patch of Freudenberg. And it looked like this from the 17th century. The town center burned down twice, the last time in 1666. The fact that Freudenberg looks like it did back then goes back to the then sovereign Prince Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen. He ordered the city to be rebuilt as it was before the fire. The popular photo motif is one of the most important city centers in South Westphalia in terms of architectural history and is internationally recognized as a monument.

@@ARDReisen Yes, as North Americans we often like to do genealogy, also to see the history of our names or origins of it, turns out the earliest ancestor I found through online research was from the late 1600s in Hilchenbach which back then was part of a Grafschaft called Nassau-Siegen, I guess like a small state.
Anyway, this research gave me an excuse to visit this part of Germany too, with a little personal connection. Thanks for giving me a preview!

@@hirsch4155 *Hilchenbach* is a town northeast of Siegen. There is a small lake there, and you can get there in a bike from Siegen or from nearby Kreuztal. The town is somehow like the front door of a mountain range and natural park called the *"Rothaargebirge"* (Red Hair Mountains), which became famous lately because of the re-introduction of the european bison.

Als Beatles Fan hat mir besonders der Teil mit dem Museum gefallen aber das Siegerland ist schon toll. Ich lebe
ja nun mittlerweile fast 50 Jahre "nebenan" im Westerwald und der Kreis Altenkirchen grenzt ja direkt an das
Siegerland.
Im Bergischen, wo ich ja eigentlich geboren bin, hiessen diese kleinen Messerchen "Flüxchen". Ob die Screibweise
jetzt korrekt ist k.A. aber sprachlich passt es.
Ein weiterer sehr passender Name 😄 Wir hoffen, dass du vom Westerwald aus auch mal Gelegenheit hast, das Museum zu besuchen 🤗

Ja, auf dem Parkplatz über der Sieg habe ich auch x-mal geparkt 🤣 das Beatlesmuseum war ja toll, aber in Siegen gewesen sein und nicht im Schloß ins Bergwerksmuseum gegangen zu sein, ist eine Unterlassungssünde ....
