I'm not a colorist either. I'm a former Wildstorm inker. I'm trying to put together a crowd funder too, so I'm adding new 'hats' to wear because I don't have any collaborators. I learned a couple new things out of this video. Thanks, Joe!
Thanks Chuck! Coloring is a new world for a lot of us. I recently figured out how to do line holds in Clip Studio Paint too. Good luck with your crowdfund. If you'd like to promote it, send me an email.
@@jaro4742 -- I did -- about 3-5 issues I think -- it was a really long time ago! I also did some Stormwatch, Backlash, Grifter and a lot of other odds and ends over there at one point or another. I have digital inking demos on my channel here on UA-cam and more coming soon.
I felt that same way when figured out I was going to color my comic. I'm glad it helped! I stream on Wednesdays 630 est if you want any live questions answered.
amazing video! I personally just do flats by separating them into different layers at the start, I have the art layer, then I create a layer folder for the colours, in which I do those separate layers of flats, and then, onto each layer( named like" background walls" or" sky" or even " skin" )I add new layers to put the real colour, some shading and effect if needed. was just colouring a comic book cover when watching your video
I needed this, I'm a drawer at heart (I've always jokingly called myself a good drawer) and I've stepped foot into painting many many times, but I've noticed I just don't think like a painter, I've always just seen it as still drawing lines but now with color instead, and I also just don't really understand color in general either unless it's white/gray/black values, so I think after having witnessed so many amazing artists on the internet and trying to understand how THEY color it just came to me that maybe two tone is just my pace, I can put enough effort into it that it isn't lazy and I can still prioritize my line art! Thank you for this informative video Joe!
Really glad you liked it and I feel the same way about painting. I just don't think that way. However, I just released a How to Draw hands tutorial so check that one out too.
Nice! As suspected, we have almost the same process, yet the outcomes are quite different. That just goes to show how much the artist's own input matters in this style.
Thanks for watching, Mike. Yea like you said, these are just the tools used in a sequence. It’s all about the artist behind it. In the lighting section... I talk about some of the idiosyncrasies.
Your are right. It’s definitely easier and less messy. But the fundamentals of lighting won’t change. So you may be able to take something away from watching the the lighting explanation I give halfway through.
I keep on coming back to this video because I absolutely love this style. I was super shocked to see that you don't ink and go straight to colours, but I REALLY love how it looks. Do you do your pencils traditionally and then scan in? Or are you doing them digitally?

I often trace snapshots of 3D models when drawing vehicles and weapons. I'm not ashamed of it, speeds up my work.
Cool. It's definitely efficient. I do trace a good amount too, but I actually enjoy drawing the hard surface vehicles and such. Thanks for watching.
@@GoodJoeArt Amazing artwork by the way. I love the looseness of it. So you don't ink your comic? From sketch straight to colors?
@@TKCPrime Yep. I really dig that style even though many pros would tell me it’s ugly and a waste. You gotta follow what you think looks right.

Sometimes the algorithm throws at me videos that I actually need right now. This is awesome, thank you.
I love that when it happens! Glad you are on board. Much more to come.
Man, I wish I saw this video sooner! Coloring is my biggest challenge, and this video me understand it so much better!

Sweet! I've been waiting for this.

Very happy that its helpful!

was just colouring a comic book cover when watching your video
That's a great way to do. Keep it non destructive as possible. Sometimes that method slows me down.
What a brilliant character design! Whoever made it must be extremely smart and good-looking.
And apparently has the midwest charm!
Awesome!
Appreciate cha!

Thanks! And I appreciate you coming by. New tutorials coming soon.
Great video. I actually really enjoyed the high contrast color palette of the flats stage.
Thanks for watching! And cool, I find flatting can be a good time to experiment.

Yea, thank you. Getting close to 1k now.
There is a native option in clip studio under edit. Turn brightness into transparency and Bob's your uncle, no plugin necessary.
Yea, you're absolutely right. I had forgotten that sweet tool after just clicking the action plugin for so long.
Thank you for this one!
Amazing video
Thanks Boss!
Thanks Boss!
Brilliant video, Joe. I can't wait to try this on a cover I am working on to see how it looks!
Thanks man. Make sure you tag me or feel free to shoot me any questions!
Good tips, and awesome result.
Thanks William. I tried to breakdown some the important points but there’s a lot to cover in one video.
There is a setting in the edit menu called "Convert brightness to opacity" and boom white pixels removed on shot
Yes! I was using the action for so long that I forgot the tool to point to. Thanks for bring it up! As long as you have your levels right its cake.
@@GoodJoeArt No problem and thanks for the great video and awesome work!
You've got there a really Cool character sweet
Oh, yea. That character is from an indie book of a friend of mine. Links in the description.
I fancy myself a penciler only still don't know how to color but let's see after this 😅
This video will surely get you on your way.
Fantastic!!!

Is the book about light you’re talking about How to Render HC: The Fundamentals of Light, Shadow and Reflectivity
Yes. His other book is great as well!
@27:25 Cold blooded. But it’s real. I bought the courses from Kurt Michael Russell and Rueben Lara.
hahaha, yea. I don't pull punches. How were their courses?

Thx !
Hope it helped out.
Great stuff. Unfortunately the bg music was too repetitive and made it hard to watch.
Thanks for that feedback. I'll change it up in the future!
