@John Peters where to start with... Well first of all: Portuguese living in Luxembourg speak 4 to 5 languages and that does NOT make them educated. You should be in Luxembourg to see how far from the Portuguese reality they are. I believe that you should redefine your standards... An educated person would know that Madeira even though is torwards the south of Portugal is not considered south but Islands instead. North and South in Portugal it always refers to continental Portugal. And I wish that you could have had the opportunity of meeting Portuguese people that curse a little less - by this I mean not to say a bad word in every 3 words spoken - you would be a better person. Cheers mate. No hate!

    • @hugofernandes4778

@John Peters I believe that you need to travel more. Following Kant's theories, we learn with experience and you have definitely lack of it. Just for you to know, my country is compose for the most mixed genetics in Europe. Also, culturally speaking, we are indeed very different. So even though you prefer to continuing preaching and saying that most Portuguese curse all the time, do it. But your ignorance will probably silent you... Cheers mate

As living here for around 4 years I agree with the most of the facts. But being more positive I will say that Portuguese people are very warm and welcoming. We have a old saying that says: in a table of a Portuguese we can accommodate more 2 or 3 people.
If you like to train your Portuguese, just say so, and everyone will enjoy to point at something and say it in Portuguese. Maybe even saying in English and in Portuguese, so you can learn faster. But we will insist that you have a great pronunciation, no shortcuts in there.

I found hilarious when you said that portuguese switch right back to english when tourists try to speak our language, it's so true. Because mainly, i think, we know that learning the language from a 10 second talk won't get you too far and people don't have the time neither the patience to speak the native language when, we know for sure, you won't understand a word unless we repeat it at least 5 times. So that's kinda pointless and that's why we switch back to english to get the conversation rolling and try to be helpful towards tourists.
Although, if you want to talk in portuguese to learn the language, people would be more enthusiastic about it if you do it when they are relaxing in coffees, restaurants or bars perhaps, especially if alcohol is around.
The fact regarding we talking about food when we eat at any time of the day it's really on point, maybe that's what makes us have such rich gastronomy

Having many names is in fact a way to honor and remember our ancestors. My son, for example, has 5 names: one individual first name and the other 4 names are each one the last name of each one of his grandparents. Remembering where you come from is important. Having many names has another advantage: it becomes unlikely that someone else has the same exact 5 or 6 names you have, in the same sequence. So, your name becomes a true form of identification. There are millions of John Smiths, so the name is actually useless as identification, but there are probably very few João Almeida Cunha de Sousa Brito Vaz. :-)

We speak English with other people because we don't have time or we think it's better. But when you ask us to speak portuguese so you can learn, we do it.
If you ask people, that don't know enought about the world they think Portugal is part of Spain and that is why we hate when the tourists speak Spanish.

Most Portuguese people have 4 names. 2 given names, the mother's last name and the father's last name (keep in mind some last names include particles like de/do/dos). Having only 1 given name (3 names in total) isn't uncommon too. Now, some people choose to give their kids more than 4 names but that's not so usual.

Most of the facts are true. No one should speak bad about a Country unless you are a Citizen . That ladies with moustache was a stereotype its like saying French Ladies dont shave her arm pits or take a bath, or all the Nordic women are tall , blond with blue eyes. Portuguese are bad drivers for two reasons : they all get a license (and some of them should not get one, ever!) second since cars are very expensive anyone with a Fiat or a Renault think it is a Ferrari . Here everything is for next week, take your time, relax, work is for the Nordics :) Portuguese football is a love / hate relation, you love your club but you hate even more the other teams (specially the major ones) , so if you change club you are a traitor and traitors should be killed ( Check Viriathus History and what the Romans did )

I have heard so many times that nothing else is good other than their bica or portuguese beaches. All great and amazing, but seriously there are so many beutiful places in the world, I dont like when people keep saying theirs is the best, because it really just depends on the individuals preference. Some people love mountaines, or a nice latte rather than a bica, noons should give you hard feelings because you love sthing else other than their own preference. Funny you mentioned leaving someone hanging on the second kiss on the cheek: we have that as well! It's usually done between the upper class, and it's common in more expensive areas: They only kiss one cheek! When someone from the middle class meets someone from the upper class, it's very common for the middle class person to be left hanging when going for the second kiss. When you do it on accident among friends, people tend to laugh a bit and (friendly) call a snob or, more specifically, a "Tia de Cascais", which translates to "Cascais' Aunt", because Cascais is a very rich area near the beach in the District of Lisbon and older people from there (thus the aunt part) tend to look down on the "poor" population of Portugal!

The Portuguese people are the result of a HUGE mixage of people from all Europe and from Mediterranean coasts. That's why we love everybody! The 1st, were the Iberians and the Celts. But even the Vikings used to come here. To take salt. And they intruduced here ... bacalhau! That's why it is a nacional dish but, we don't have the fish.
However, the true story is not so simple as this. It is really complex.

When I am having lunch and ask my grandma what it’s dinner she says “you are eating now, are u already thinking about the dinner?” And I told her that I need to know what is dinner because if it is a food that I don’t appreciate I need to eat more at lunch!!

This is nice. I also have big name but just for your knowledge is normal in Portugal for someone to have 2 names, then you have the last name of your mum and the last name of your dad. This was you carry both family names always and we have 2 given names because either it's because the parents like both names together for example "Ana Maria" or you usually is for example the dad gives one name and mum the other, the kid later on in life can choose how he wants to be called. It gives you choice.

About the 15min after giving you the menu is for you to take your time chosing/ not pressure you to feel rushed. In a way of saving time, they would then take the chance to serve others in the meantime as well. I like it lol I usually need my time to check the entire menu even if at the end I decide to order just a coffee! Lmao xD

Hej Amalie and Joen! I am a portuguese living in Copenhagen, originally from Lisbon therefore I always watch your videos and it's really funny for me to see how you guys experience life there, and compare it with the way we are experiencing it here in Cph. And also compare stereotypes. I would like to mention that it happens the same here about practicing the language: Everybody speaks really good english and they switch to english the moment they understand we're not fluent. Another funny thing is that we also came to the conclusion that danes are crazy drivers, not so much in the city center but in high ways, they get insane! And don't get me started on bike drivers xD Also, it is really strange for us that here is totaly normal to make plans on being wasted 'this weekend' and refer that you've been completely drunk like it was a good thing, absolutely no shame on that. I would have a lot of other interesting comparisons to add.. Let me know if you'd like my input on those :) Love your videos

A lot of Portuguese people have 6 names, (the most traditional) the first one its like the one the parents choose, the second one its usually Maria (old catholic tradition) the next two are the family names of your mother side and the last two the family names from your father side . Wen i talk to my dad about my friends he sometimes asks me their family names and he can tell me about their families, he knows their history maybe somo of them personally. One time wen i was young i invited a friend from school, wille we were having dinner my dad asked his family name and we found out that i was like my friends oncle, her mother is my cousin. (3rth or 4rth generation cousin). In my group of close friends in high school, my father new personally some of the family members of 3 of my friends and new about the family of almost every other. But that is because we are neighbors and hower parents were neighbors or from lisbon too.

The comment about parking the car everywhere mainly applies to big cities, like Lisbon and Porto, for example (but especially Lisbon). That doesn't happen in the rest of the country. I live in an average size city and people properly respect parking spaces. That's one of the reasons I hate big cities (especially Lisbon), I find their parking habits disrespectful and chaotic.

    • @Module79L
      @Module79L 4 роки тому

It doesn't happen in the rest of the country? Go watch some of my videos and see for yourself the "jungle" that parking is here in Torres Novas. And it's not occasional, it's every single day!

@@Module79L I saw just one of your videos and I didn't see one single example of bad parking, which was what was mentioned here. Bad driving is not bad parking. Maybe I didn't see enough of your videos but, sorry to say, I didn't have patience to watch a video of someone simply driving around. Anyway, of course that if you search deep enough you'll find examples of whatever anywhere. We're talking about typical behavior, not 1 case in 10000.

In each video, after the bad driving section there's a bad parking section, with situations that occur repeatedly in the same places, many times featuring the same drivers. If that's not typical behavior, I don't know what is.
Oh, and I'm not "simply driving around", each and every clip I include in my videos is captured during my daily drivings and show bad driving in general and all sorts of traffic violations that go unpunished.

@@Module79L What a strange activity you have... I wonder if there aren't more interesting things to do... Anyway, if you search deep enough, and only show what you want, you can prove whatever you want. You even say yourself that you capture the same places and same drivers... so, you're just proving that some guys are bad, you're not proving any trend or doing any "great revelation". What you're doing is called "cherry picking". I saw already twice bicycles on a highway and even 3 or 4 times pedestrians. If I had filmed it and shown it to the world, omitting all the other times I didn't see any of this, I could argument that our highways are full of bicycles and pedestrians. I googled some statistics of bad parking and saw that, for example, according to some studies, Stockholm, Madrid or London have worse parking habits that even Lisbon (which is the worse in Portugal). Are these studies valid? I don't know but probably they have a wider statistic coverage than yours.

About the way we cut a Portuguese conversation with foreigners, it is only a matter of priorities. We love a good chat. Sometimes talking Portuguese with someone who don't control our language is very problematic. Also, many times the other thinks that one thing was understood but, it was really another thing. Portuguese is maybe the richest language in the world, where you can find a very specific word for a very unique situation. I always recommend foreigners to have Portuguese lessons in an institute.
