  • I love finding Mid- Century Furniture Pieces for my own home, but with that comes the necessity to find accent pieces from the same era. As we all know, buying rugs, lamps, wall art etc. can be expensive, so in this episode I will attempt to restore a $5 Mid-Century Modern Lamp from the Thrift Store. I will disassemble, sand, paint and finish every piece of this project using Rustoleum Metallic Paint, Odie's Oil, and Howard Feed n Wax. Enjoy the nature sounds and the ASMR portions of this video.

Mega cool lamp shade, very mid-century, and not a common shape. Great job, but a word of cation: I had a solid brass lamp took it apart, got it shined up beautifully. There were so many little parts to it, then drove myself crazy threading it back together again. So advice, record exactly how you took it apart, or at the very least, draw yourself a diagram. Save yourself the grief. Great filming and editing Barry.

Thanks for this. I was disappointed this was not solid brass. I was really looking forward to polishing vs painting. Funny you would mention the assembly. I had to look back on the video to make sure I was putting it back together in the right order. Always appreciate your comments

I watched a mechanic repair a car transmission. He laid out the parts in order as he removed them and he took a lot of pictures to document it. Worked for him. There looked like hundreds of little parts...

    • @rockshot100
      @rockshot100 2 роки тому +1

@@lynnestamey7272 Shoot YES! I cannot imagine putting that back together without a diagram or pic even better. That solid brass lamp looked great in pieces, after 4 hours of "try this way, try that way", I just had to throw it away, such a shame, it was all my fault, what was I thinking?

Nicely done, the shade fits the lamp very well. Sometimes when doing those period lamps, the challenge can be to find a lampshade that looks good on the base. Especially in the 40's through the early 60's, some of the materials used for shades were adventurous, from fiberglass to sisal to one I found that had been scraped cow hide originally. Replacing to achieve the correct "look" can take patience. Your lamp has a nice timelessness to it, and clean design. Thank you for sharing.

My three living room lamps are mid century ceramic. The first one I bought came from an old ladies house, her kids were clearing it out and I paid ten euros. I was quite heavy, they had no idea what it was, didn't care and it was super dirty. It has three crushed glass inserts that show that it also had a bulb inside the base. I love that lamp. The second one is another heavy one, paid 8 euros at a charity shop and the third one has daisies painted on it, quite sixties, paid ten euros. I also have two mid century wall lights that I have on the wall for show, they are ironwork and signed and one offs. The other day I found an incredible ironwork standard lamp signed, in the style of Jacques Adnet, I paid three euros !!!!! Really simple design, well balanced and so well made. It made my day anyway!

Fantastic 1950s lamp. So glad you didn't paint the wood. The burlap shade is perfect. The background music is perfect; the emphasis stayed on the project without making me think about lyrics. About the time I wondered about narration, the captions kicked in. This was a shorter project and so the captions worked perfectly. On a longer project, captions-only might compete for attention with watching the details of your work. Excellent choice. I'm still amazed at your organization of supplies in the large cabinet. Being attuned to that level of detail sets your channel apart from many other UA-camrs. Thanks for another enjoyable peek inside your workshop!

Looks like Don Draper is missing a lamp. I clearly remember the sixties, it was a wonderful time. My mother was young and beautiful and I miss her every single day.

Well Barry that was a different format! Missed you walking through the process giving out details. However I do believe I heard sheep, crickets, a dog and a cow... I have run across a couple of stiffel lamps at yard sales and thrift stores always good for resale. Barry you do such a great an excellent detailed job, always going the extra step. Always look forward to your videos!🐑🐶🐮🐦❤ thanks again so much for sharing!

Thank you Neil. I tried not to add too many details, because truthfully, I'm not an expert when it comes to these lamps. I was hoping others would share stories because I love to learn. Thank you for sharing. The values aren't much of a priority for me since I have found much better mid century examples cheap. I know if i find really nice items, i won't destroy them by trying to refinish. I always appreciate your support. Barry

Wow Man!!! Always breathing new life into your projects Bud!! This came out fantastic. Without scrolling through the comments to see I think I head a Wolf howl & some Sheep. Along with the birds of course. But, I was more focused on how awesome the lamp was coming along. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!

Nicely done. One tip that you probably figured out after you were done, I have found that it is easier to reassemble all of the parts that are on the vertical threaded pipe (from the base cup of the socket down through the bottom nut under the weight) before you then thread the wire through in one smooth go. Then one thread out the side and seal up the base. I saw you threading each piece on and have fond (not) memories of getting 2/3 the way through a floor lamp with articulations and lots and lots of parts threaded one by one on to the wire and thinking that I had threaded waaayy too many things! Great work; always enjoy it.

    Absolutely loved watching this!
The sounds were so relaxing I caught birds and wolves but then zoned out on the transformation of it all which was fantastic. Love your thrifted version of the dremel rig it really shows people where there’s a will there’s a way. Great job Barry!

Hi Barry, In another video you talked about Lane furniture -i.e. end tables that can cost as much as $275. Today I went to a flea market and sure enough, there was an end table to match the one in this video for $275 (mint condition)!! Love your work - you have inspired me to do more restorations.

Beautiful lamp! I know your thing is brass, and believe me, I
understand. I collected brass for years. Alas, I'm old and no longer want to keep it up.
The thing is, when you polished that and discovered that it wasn't real brass, it looked really good as the bare metal. I was surprised. I do understand, though, that you wanted it to fit your asthetic. I have a lamp shade nearly identical to that one. Great job and for little money. You can't beat that! 🙂👍

Wow that lamp is so beautiful! I actually made up 2 table lamps buying all the parts including 2 wooden vases and two lamp shades. Honestly, I think these cost me more than if I were to buy them outright. Anyways, I love yours!!
