  • I-80 in SLC is now open (and they got done early!) Take a peek at what we’ve been doing the last couple days.
Our crews demolished the existing 1300 East bridge over I-80 and slid in a brand new one the very next day. The new bridge was constructed next to the old one, and was slid in using an innovative method of bridge work (called Accelerated Bridge Construction) that was pioneered in Utah and reduces delays and traffic restrictions for drivers.
Our contractor, Ralph L Wadsworth Construction, slid the bridge approximately 110 feet, making it one of the longest bridge slides performed in Utah.
The 1300 East bridge was originally built in the early 1960s and was due for replacement. The new bridge is 175 feet long and 172 feet wide, with a new 17-foot-wide trail on the east side and a new sidewalk on the west side. It will provide a smoother ride for drivers and will enhance safety for people who walk and bike.

I have a 3 year old construction and how-it-works loving guy, and he has watched this 3 times so far, and had me cast it to the TV from the phone so he could see it on the big screen! 🎉

Great videography. I do wish that the end was a little longer with some footage of the new bridge being used for a sense of completion.
    Overall 10/10 on the bridge.
Now can UDOT put my tax dollars to work on lines that are actually visible in inclement weather like Colorado has

Nice work by the construction crew. That was a remarkably speedy installation! That said: it sure would be nice if UDOT maintained its own in-house construction crew rather than contracting the work out! I'm sure that road construction happens frequently enough to make it worthwhile.

As a side issue, note that NONE of that heavy equipment used there could EVER possibly be battery electric. For several separate reasons.
