  • Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura played their first classical game after 4 years but it ended in a draw in 10 minutes. The second game was Armageddon and Hikaru Nakamura had 10 minutes on the clock with white pieces, Magnus Carlsen had 7 minutes with black pieces. Hikaru Nakamura took the risk and played King's Gambit against Magnus Carlsen.

Why do so many people comment on these videos not understand the situation happening. These 2 have played so many times the opening choice isn't about disrespect, there is no way Hikaru thinks he will walk over Magnus, it is about surprising them and making them think and waste time. Even a meta bad opening can be good in low time formats if the opponent can be made to think. Hikaru needed the win and tried an off beat opening and it didn't work. That's high level chess. (And yes I know this opening is well understood but it is not played often at their level and he tried and well yeah he failed as would all of us verses the GOAT)

KG was considered unsound opening already 80 years ago. Keres played it against Alekhine in 1942 Salzburg second round game. He needed to win in order to win the tournament, hoped to surprise World Champion. Well, he failed.
Alekhine kept his cool, kept his extra pawn until very end and converted it to win.
Sure, from time to time it had some surprise elements notably Fischer fell into this hellhole against Spassky. Spassky knew KG traps and lines better and totally destroyed young Fischer position in 29 moves. Bobby was furious because before the game he had said something not flattering about stupid players who still are trying to surprise his opponents with KG and after the painful loss he felt like an idiot. Spassky was generally considered as gentleman in chess but when he had a chance, he humiliated his opponent on chess board viciously..
