BE OPEN AND LEARN TO LISTEN - Homily by Fr. Danichi Hui on Sept. 8, 2024 on the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)
September 8, 2024 | Sunday
Readings:
Isaiah 35:4-7; | Psalms 146:7, 8-9, 9-10; | James 2:1-5; | Mark 7:31-37;
Story: Once there were two friends walking on the sidewalk of a business district. People were rushing along the sidewalks, and car honks and hurried engine noises filled the streets. In the middle of all these, friend (one) stopped and told his friend (two), “Did you hear that? ”Friend (two) asked, “Which one? ”Friend (one) said, the cricket!
Friend (two) got surprised and asked, “Where?”
Friend (one) brought Friend (two) in a plant box, pulled away some of the bush, and showed where the cricket was. “There it is," said Friend (one).
Friend (two) asked, “How did you hear that with all this noise and traffic? ”
Friend (one) answered, “It was the way I was raised... what I was taught to listen for. Here, I’ll show you something.”
Friend (one) reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of coins... and dropped them on the sidewalk. Everyone who was rushing by stopped to... listen.
Biblical: My dear brothers and sisters, this is the lesson that we could learn from our gospel and celebration today. In our gospel, we heard Jesus go into the District of Decapolis, or a Gentile territory (a place of non-believers).
When suddenly, people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. (Take note, they asked him to “lay his hands on him.”)
Bagamat kasi walang pananampalataya ang mga taong ito, marami na silang naririnig kay Hesus. Naririnig nila na nakakapagpagaling si Hesus. Naririnig nila ang paraan ng pagpapagaling ni Hesus at ito ang pagpapataong ng kamay ni Hesus sa may sakit.
That’s how their ears were trained. To know how Jesus heals.
But Jesus took him off by himself away from the crowd. (Inilayo niya ang pipi sa kanila) He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting (lumura), touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned (nagbuntong-hininga), and said to him, “Ephphatha!”- that is, “Be opened! ”
Immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.
Lesson: Narinig ninyo? Eh naintindihan po ninyo? Ibig sabihin, hindi natin kailangan sabihan si Hesus kung ano ang kaniyang gagawin. Dahil may sarili siyang paraan kung paano niya tayo didinggin.
God has his own way, different from our way. That is why he said, Ephphatha!”- meaning “Be opened! ”- so that our ears may be opened.
Reflection: In the story, it was not only the deaf who opened his ears but also those people who do not believe (the Gentiles). These people are the ones who told Jesus what to do. Sila din yung sinasabihan ni Hesus ng “Ephphatha!” (Mabuksan)
Kayong mga hindi naniniwala sa Diyos, “Ephphatha!” (Mabuksan)
Kayong mga marurunong pa sa Diyos, “Ephphatha!” (Mabuksan)
Kayong mag tinuturuan ang Diyos kung ano ang kaniyang dapat gawin, “Ephphatha!” (Mabuksan)
Jesus is opening our ears so that we could get used to listening to him.
Contemporary: Kaya tayo nagkakanda ligaw są buhay, ay dahil kung kani-kanino tayo nakikinig.
Kaya hindi ka umasenso-asenso kasi ayaw mong pakinggan ang nagtuturo sayo.
Kaya ka laging palpak dahil sarado ang tainga mo.
Lahat İto ay dahil şinanay mo ang sarili mong huwag makinig. Kaya kahit Diyos, gusto mo makinig sayo. “Ephphatha!” (Mabuksan)!
Celebration: Today is the Birthday of Mama Mary. Isang babaeng bukod na pinagpala sa lahat. A woman of obedience to God. Al these because she opened her ears to God.
Sigurado ako lahat ito ay dahil sinanay siya ng kaniyang mga magulang na sina Sta. Ana at San Joaquin na makinig sa Diyos. Kaya naman kahit anong hirap nang pinapagawa ng Diyos, siya ay nakinig at sumunod sa Diyos.
My dear brothers and sisters, God has his own ways. So never insist your way. Instead, be open and learn to listen.
