I have watched this several times and the one about Fancy Mae's Gear List. Our 1 year old rescued Norwegian Elkhound will be hiking the TRT with us this year. So I was taking notes. I appreciate the gear list as I have the same body shape as your mom. I'm always worried about clothing. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Love hiking with my dogs, I got 3 and they take turns hiking and coming to work with me. They are like my kids, it's nice seeing other people treat dogs the way they deserve to be treated!
Well happy 60th momma! You passed on your pretty genes to your daughter. So glad Fancy wasn’t sick too long. She cracks me up the way she hides under the covers like a kid who doesn’t want to get up and go to school. I grew up on Mt Hood and Lolo Pass, my old stomping grounds. I used to swim in Eagle Creek. Dixie, your videography is so fine. I love the details that you catch that most would just lumber right past. You really notice the intricacy of nature, and share the magic. Congrats on crossing The Bridge of the Gods! Finally!

Dixie you're an absolute inspiration to not only me but I've recently shown your triple crown videos to my gf who was convinced she was "not a hiker" to actually being open to the possibility of her doing these thru hikes and to not be scared of starting something just because she doesn't think she can do it we both love watching your videos and now she's even all excited over the gear and learning more and everything. She even had her first camping trip with me this summer that went great!

Just hiked that section three weeks ago. Took 30 different flower photos. It was fantastic.
@Jean-Louis Bourgeois it is amazing how quickly the forest comes back to life. Small pines already, ferns that were 3 feet high, everything so lushly green.

Happy 60th Birthday to your Mum!
I just wanted to let you know that I, like many others have been inspired by your many videos of your through hikes! At the start of this year, I decided to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc (in memory of my brother Steve), and when I haven't been able to get out and hike, due to work, weather, or the time it takes to get anywhere with any serious elevation gain (from London), I've been on the cross-trainer and the stair-climber at the gym, watching your PCT episodes with the Sierra Nevada hike programme on the machine! I just finished the 35th episode last week, and I start the TdMB in 10 days. I've hiked a couple of 26 mile routes in a day in the last month, and I feel ready.

And I Agree, since I caught the bug I spend a lot of my down time between hikes watching hiking videos on UA-cam. Dixie is one of my favs! Being a Southern (American) boy, everything is better by default, when presented in a Southern girl's voice ;-)
@Shane Lewis I hope so! I'm currently having last minute "but what if I do need crampons after all (in July)", "What if I break my ankle on day one" type nonsense nerves! Deep breaths! It. Will. All. Be. Fine.

I do love watching her musings, and particularly enjoy how comfortable she gets with being daft in front of the camera as time goes on. It's all good! Hello Dixie and Mom, The "rabbit trail" got me here tonight. I was reading an AT trail journal, and had started the journal at its last entry and then read selected entries, then figured I would start at the beginning. Anyway, one entry mentioned you, Dixie, doing trail magic and he went on to say you were apparently famous on UA-cam. So, I thought I would check up on you, as I do from time to time. Glad to see all is well with you. Glad you are out hiking, and your Mom with you. My two favorite...my only two hiking companions, are my two sons. One just turned 23, the other is 27. We are day hiking the AT together...OAB, no backcountry camping. Campground camping, (Loft Mountain, Big Meadows, Shenandoah River State Park, and our last trip we camped at Bears Den Hostel (tented).
We are probably opposite of you and your Mom. I am not sure if they would be hiking the AT if not for me. Literally, good sons as they are, they are doing it for me. I always ask the oldest son, did he enjoy the hike. He always says something like...I don't know if enjoy is the word. I always say, You know you did. We laugh. I tell him, I go to the movies with you. He does not think hiking and going to a movie is comparable. I am a lucky Mom. I will soon be 59. My greatest joys are being with my sons. I am glad you and your Mom are enjoying being together, even if the weather at times can be less enjoyable, the time together is. On our last hike, I did mention you to a family. We had hiked down to Sam Moore Shelter from Bears Den Hostel and back to Bears Den Rocks. Before we were to continue on to Pine Grove Road, Snickers Gap, I wanted my picture at Bears Den Rocks. There was a family there. It looked like a Mom with several teenage children. I told her we were hiking the AT. As they asked questions, I told here our hike today would be about 7.4 miles. They were in awe. They kept going on about me being able to hike 7.4 miles. When I told them our longest hike was about eleven miles, they were in unbelief. Having to turn the adulation away from me I told them of you, Dixie, who I thought had hiked 60 miles in a 24 hour period. I could not remember exactly, but, I told them you did 40 miles for sure, but, I thought 60 was what you really did. They were totally awed. She took my picture for me, and my sons, who usually prod me away from conversing to long, were ready for us to finish our hike. I watched the family who took my picture leave and hike back to where they parked at Snickers Gap. I was in awe of them too. They were out enjoying the day together too; a shorter hike for them, but, I expect, all the same as memorable. Glad to see you hiking, and you and your Mom enjoying being together. Many happy trails to you both.

Taking care of your mom's ankle! I'm 60 years old too and I love to spend time with my sons. I also find it challenging especially if I am with a younger person like when I go with my 23-year-old sons. When I'm walking at my own pace, they leave me behind and to think that once when I was a younger father and they were much younger boys, I was the fast one, stronger, faster, smarter one. Time changes everything, some for better and some for the worst. All we can do is enjoy the moments we have and the people we love. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR MOM!

I'm sure I'm 'preaching to the converted' here, but make sure those slugs keep away from Fancy - don't want her getting lung worm! (I'm sure you knew this already, you both seem like good, caring people). She is heart-meltingly cute :) Also, happy 60th to your mam, and thank you so much for the inspirational videos. I do day, overnight, and weekend hikes all the time, but you've inspired me to take on some long distance trails around Europe, and I'm thinking of doing a long section (or thru, possibly...) hike of the AT, PCT, or Trans Canada trail next year. Also, the backpacking forum is brilliant for tips and advice! :)

Yeah for you and your mom! I would love to go with my mom to do this stuff but her age (82) and health does not permit her to do anything. So, I am going to hike the AT and do a half and half. I will do half this year and half next year. And she will follow along with Facebook and my spot gps!! She’s excited for us and this journey “we’re” going on❤️❤️
I remember when my mother was about 77 or so she told me that she "climbed Mt. Washington (NH)." I stared at her in disbelief as she's always hated exercise and did as little as possible. When I questioned her she said that she "climbed the wooden stairs" that went from the parking lot to the Observation Building and Visitor Center that is on the top.

I love that you share your adventures with your family. I miss my mother terribly, but have taken up backpacking and my daughter (11) is getting more into it as well. Maybe eventually we'll convince my husband to come along.
Dixie, I have been with you on all three of the Triple Crown hikes, and want to tell you this one is by far the most impressive. Your vidiography skills are becoming 110%. I'm glad Fancy got well so quickly. I. Just hiked section "G" in June and did go across the bridge and stayed in the hiker camp for a night. Took tons of flower photos, was beautiful. But raining or heavy fog, damp and cold. Yep, I understand

I used to hike with my Jack Russell. He could be alot of fun or a real pain in the butt. Anytime we got near a pasture he would find some green poop and roll in it. When we were at a shelter he would insist on sleeping in my bag. Not fun on a rainy day. When we tented he wanted to sleep at the foot of the tent and growl at me. All said I miss him terrible. Everyone seemed to like him.
