Awesome! Just picked up a 2000 rav4 gonna be doing some lil fixes and new tires and what not but this is a great reference video for me. Love what you did!
People are always surprised with how much you can get in these things. I can take 3 people, all their clothes, gear, and food enough for a weekend snowboarding trip in tahoe comfortably.
I have a 98 RAV4 L 2WD. Surprisingly it is still very capable rig, I’ve taken it off roading and on snow and it performed well. For your oil burning issue, if it’s available in your area. Try using Valvoline Restore and Protect. It’s reduced my oil consumption, from burning a quart every 2k miles to burning half a quart every 5k miles, I still used 5w-30
love this gen rav-4. i ended up going with a cr-v for various reasons though, i would have bought a rav-4 at the right price too. 146hp (for the 99-2001) was a big part of it, because i wanted to tow a reasonable amount. i also like the way they look more and i think they make better use of interior room with their more boxy shape. if anyone's comparing the first gen cr-v to the rav-4, i did a fair amount of research when i was looking and here are some takeaways: rav 4 pros - *better offroad, this was a definite advantage for the rav 4. the honda is fwd until the wheels start to slip then the rear kicks in, somewhat slowly and never fully. this can be remedied by putting in a later gen rear diff, but the rav4 has a better system to start with and the manual has a locking center diff button which is way better than the cr-v. this system in the cr-v's case also requires a honda specific fluid. *better build quality. there are a number of issues with the 1st gen cr-v, to. name a few the door wiring harness is bad, plastic joints on the wiper linkage wear out quickly, handles and rear license plate surround are notorious for breaking, rear view mirrors dont adjust as much as they should, window motors and lock motors are weak, rear springs are known to sag. i know the rav 4 has some issues too but i believe the quality is better overall. engines i would say are a tie, although you have to adjust the valve clearance on the cr-v regularly. id say rust is about equal. i have 2x 1st gens, both manual, on has 200k(miles) and the other 350, they both run great. cr-v pros - *more power at least if you get the right year, the 97/98 is almost identical to the Toyota power wise but the 99-01 has 20hp over the Toyota and ive personally towed 3,500# without a problem. *parts availability, when i go to the junkyard there are always at least 3-5 first gen cr-v's but im lucky to find a single rav-4. the cr-v outsold the rav-4 significantly and they are everywhere. *better ride, the 1st gen cr-v has a double wishbone front suspension and handles better than the rav-4's mcpherson. *better travel vehicle. things like the folding table in the back in all 1st gens, the storage drawer under the passenger seat, the feature in some where the back seats can fold down and create a bed with the front seats i think make it a better travel car. i also feel like the space is more usable. either one is a great vehicle, probably tied overall as the best general purpose cars ever made.
Nice rig I’m looking right now on facebook marketplace for 1 the only thing I want a manual transmission but is hard to find 1 manual transmission and 4wd keep the good stuff good vibes from the Sunshine ☀️ state
@ yes true, I found 1 in South Carolina manual transmission and 4wd let’s see what happens. Here in Florida you can find only 2WD and automatic transmission and few other 4WD models
hey jimmy i love your videos. Your videos on the second gen rav4 you owned convinced me to get one my self, and it's the best vehicle i've owned. My question is how does the first gen and second gen compare to each other in your opinion?
They are both awesome! The 2nd gen I had was a five speed, and I really enjoyed that. I don't think you could go wrong with either of them. But this one is definitely slower 😁.
Are first gen full time awd?? I read a lot of contradicting info on that, I believe first and second gens are full time awd, I own a 4th gen and although I like it I wish it was full time awd.
I have owned one of these and I would not call it amazing or a beast. It was not a bad car but it was not terribly reliable, it is not safe in a crash and it did not drive well in the snow.
Keep up the good work on the RAV4, it’s looking awesome Jimmy 😃👍🏼
Thank you, Daniel! Much appreciated and will do 🤠👍

Thank you and congrats! They're very much fun 👍👌
I have a 97 with over 200 thousand miles and i love it.
They just keep going!

1.Gen RAV is basically the amount of space and 4wd most people really need.
Hi Jimmy! Every time I see all your vehicles I get jealous. Nothing like an older vehicle! Same thing with people! He he he🍺🍺🍺❤️

That's a great summary, and I appreciate the detailed pros and cons of both!

The manual is fun for sure! Plus, you can actually lock the center diff on them. Good luck in your hunt for one. 👍
@ yes true, I found 1 in South Carolina manual transmission and 4wd let’s see what happens. Here in Florida you can find only 2WD and automatic transmission and few other 4WD models
keep looking, they do exist just be patiant. the manual also has a center diff lock button which is great
@ yes you’re right the patient is the key. Thanks 🙏🏾
I’ve had a 5 door and currently have 2 3 doors. They are an amazing rig. Not much bigger than a side by side and dead on reliable.
I would love to find a good 3 door, looks like fun! 👍👍
I got a 98 2dr soft top. I’ve had it since 2010. 5speed fwd.
I'm looking for a 4x4 version. Awesome little SUVs 👌
@ same here. My runs great.

Yes, full-time 👍
Where is that image in the thumbnail from? The RAV4 looks too good for it to be AI generated.😂
No AI here, just rust free 😊
How long will a 99 RAV4 last with 125k miles on it 😊
Mine has 400,000 KMs on it, or 250,000 miles :)
too damn long
@@CowboyJuice I love that answer 😊😍
generally they rust out before they stop running, at least up north
@@JimmyMeatwhistle just getting broken in
Wow insurance was willing to give 7 k for a 2K car. Take it and run!
It actually was 7.5k if they towed it away.. I took the 4.6k and kept the car 🤠
@JimmyMeatwhistle that's crazy. Cars must be really expensive in Canada.
Please do not sell it! 😊
If it burns oil try 10W-30 oil and Lucas Oil Stabilizer. My RAV4 burns no oil after doing these changes 😊
I will definitely try that for sure! Thanks for that Victor 👌👌
@ My pleasure 😊😍

Hmm, this comment sounds a bit suspicious because it is truly awesome in the snow ❄️
What in the ADHD is going on with this video?
That's a cheap cat.
Chinees cat. I don't get checked on emissions. I just needed somewhere to put an O2 sensor 😁😁
