Welcome to Downtown.
This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.

The writing is so good and natural, it just feels like they recorded a conversation between friends and made animated show around it. There is a reason why I've rewatched this show so much.

I think it may be because alot of the dialogue between the characters are improvised so we're basically listening to two people having sort of a natural conversation.

I have no idea why people put such a wild spin on the 90s. I mean, it was an easier time, but so what? It was still drab and sad and drugs were just as prominant as they are today, there was a huge amount of pressure to have the "heroine chic" body, fashion was horrendous, every woman in the world decorated with stuffed animals, lava lamps and shag rugs. It was an ugly decade.

It sucks but you can't really blame MTV. They're a business and they have to appeal to whatever the majority wants to see, and unfortunately the morons that watch TV all day preferred mindless reality shows, and since those morons are MTV's main consumers, they gave them what they wanted.

@@TheAed38 As someone that's born and raised in NYC and was around during 9/11 I agree, there was an entire shift of energy after that day. But 90's culture was still present in music and cartoons for a few more years. 2004 was when it started to take a full shift.
All the conversations flow so nicely they dont even feel scripted they feel like regular conversations

Crystal Love They really Freaking could!!! Modernize it a smidge and if possible keep the animation the same! I can see this getting two seasons easily maybe more. So long as it keeps the style that has now.

well it makes sense since the creator of this show have founded the animation studio Titmouse and them being really good friends with adult swim. maybe they will do the same with Megas XLR as well

This has got to be one of the smoothest shows I've ever seen. From animation, to animation, to cinematography, to the soundtrack, to the voice acting. It all just flows

something about the grungy dark animation style of this show is comforting
This show was incredibly creative and ahead of its time. This influenced my own art style as a 9 year old.
If nine year olds did this garbage there might be hope with proper treatment. Anything older I'm afraid would need permanent care.

Still surreal how one cartoon could capture the gritty but mellow atmosphere of NYC during that era.
Would complain about how soon it was taken away, but gotta admit it's satisfying to see a show that nailed the vibe they were going for, then left with a flawless rep. All killer, no filler.

Expensive. MTV ditched their animation division. It was probably hard to get people in their 16-20’s in the 90’s to stay home at night to watch tv.

Well it probably came on late at night when you were at the limit of concieness. Hince probably one of the last things you watched before you went to sleep. So your mind equates viewing this show a a precursor to sleep.

I used to watch this whenever I couldn't get to sleep. I'd go downstairs and just watch this in the dark until I got drowsy. This show will forever remind me of late nights.

From what I can find, the majority of them did this show and never did another VA gig. Kind of sad and also kind of adds to its intrigue.
The thing is, they aren’t voice actors haha, almost all of them were random people who just did this show and didn’t do anything else like, ever...

I really enjoyed that back in the 90s when I was a young adult. Now after almost 20 years I've found it again and I must say it didn't lose the flow. Some shows are just purely universal.

Not to get all nostalgic but this show does remind me of much simpler times. Nothing is compared to 2020...such a weird and uncertain year and I've been finding myself searching for shows, cartoons and movies from the 90s. They bring huge rushes of nostalgia and extreme comfort, that at times I can't handle. It really does make me yearn for the years when I was a child.
lol I was like 25 ... but I was living sort of a similar slacker lifestyle in Chicago, so I loved this show.

Why doesn't that surprise me the slightest?
The art style, the writing, the voice acting is all great. The art style reminds me of doodles i would draw in the back of my math book in 7th grade, it’s very unique. The writing seems natural as if friends are actually talking to each other and the voice acting is the best part about the show in my opinion. I don’t know what’s about it but the voices just match each of the characters, even the side characters.
Honestly a great show that got cancelled way too early, i would rate it a 9/10.

Same, there’s just something beautiful in how human, and free they are.
They’re grounded but at the same time, one can almost fantasize about living in those shows.
There's something about shows where it's just people talking to each other with strange and funny things happening. Downtown and Home Movies hit just right.
This show and Mission Hill relax me so much...
Both did good showing the vibe of urban life back then. Sucks a lot of ppl from our gen don't care about these shows anymore, would be cool to have someone to watch these with

The dialogue on here is so visceral and natural-it's better than a podcast. I'm just shocked they conveniently found parking in front of the apartment for a van-one of those things you gotta make up for the story I suppose.

MTV will never be able to recreate a show like Downtown again. Part of why this show is so amazing is because it's like a unique time capsule of the times and those specific 90s/00s chill nostalgic vibes can't really be replicated.
This show would have such an easier time staying afloat today, it's unbelievable....
Been a fan of the show for years, this is legitimately some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, every conversation sounds so natural as if they're not reading off of a script, especially when there's multiple people speaking and the overlapping lines fit perfectly with what would be expected of a natural flow of conversation.
The dialogue is so satisfying, makes you feel a part of the show in a wierd way

@@carmen5686 There's an age difference of about 5 years at most, not enough to justify Chakas' rudeness. And although Jen is bad, at least her negative behavior towards Alex comes from her own self esteem issues, which isn't a good thing, but compare that to Chakas' motivation for being horrible being seemingly nothing but selfishness and narcissism and it's pretty clear that Chaka is worse than Jen, yet Jen gets all the hate.

This feels so natural and sincere and authentic, just like, well, the late 90s.

Watching this back in 1999 as a kid was eye opening. At the same time it was weird but at that same time it was quirky in a good way. Wish it had at least made it to a second season, that would have been cool.
Man I'm glad this series is gaining traction, but I would hate it if it became another one of TikTok's disposable playthings like Clone High.
