thats the one bad thing about riding behind another bike - having to make sure the camera lens stays clean.... but the footage always looks better, and gives you a better idea of the terrain when there is another bike in the frame.
just had to u turn at this pass. lots of lightning. lots of rocky terrain, lots of weight on the bikes, lots of crazy drivers. if you go, go early as jeeps and families in rental ATVs invade the afternoons, and the thunderstorms start at 3.
you are right, it is always best to hit these passes early in the morning. Especially after June when they get into the rainy season. The day I shot this, we did the entire Alpine loop, and rode over 100 miles - we manages to skirt most of the rain, but the trails definitely got more crowded later in the day. Too bad you had to skip Engineer, it is one of my favorites - although I think Imogene is starting to surpass Engineer now...
It was several years ago, but I want to say it was 3-4 hours from Ouray to Lake City, we did stopped a few times along the way, so not sure about actual riding time - 2, maybe 3 hrs on the bike. You can take Engineer from Ouray to Lake City, and then take Cinnamon Pass from Lake City to Silverton. There are a couple of different options to get back to Ouray from Silverton, either off-road or via 550 (assuming you are plated). This is usually referred to as the Alpine Loop. We did the loop (via the California Gulch route back to Ouray) in about 7-8 hrs (I think it was something like 110 miles). But that time frame includes stopping several times along the way along with a few detours on some of the different trails. If you were doing the loop nonstop on a bike, it would probably be around 5 hrs (about 7 in a 4x4).
Great scenery but i cant stop looking down at the line even tho i'm not riding!
Great riding there. I love how you keep thinking of us viewers and wiping the lens while still kickin it to keep up with the Kato! Well done sir.

How much time did it take you to do the entire pass from begining to Lake city?
