As a Polyphonic avid watcher, I was surprised Noah didn't know Cold Chisel. Sounds like it's right up his alley. Anw, glad to hear there are other non-Australians who enjoy their music.
Great list! Chappell Roan singing "Pink Pony Club" on SNL was SO good! I'd heard the song and thought it was okay, but it really hit for me at that performance.
Another comment from Australia here, and if you read this, I’d like to let you know there is another quintessential Aussie Vietnam song that came out a few years after Khe Sanh. I was only 19 by Redgum, whose were a folk/pop/australiana band that had one massive hit here with that song. As the Australian music guru Molly Meldrum said on Countdown every week: “Do yourself a favour” and have a listen to it.
LOREENA MCKENNITT MENTION IN 2024!!! That's so cool that you're listening to her, my mom played her non-stop when I was a kid. She really does have a great essence to her and her music.
Awesome, Loreena McKennitt mentioned, she's one of my favourite artists! She deserves more attention. That version of The Mummers' Dance is actually a remix, so that's why her other songs aren't quite like that. Have you listened to Blackmore's Night? It's Richie Blackmore and Candice Night's band. They have many albums but I think their debut, Shadow of the Moon, is a good starting place, especially the title song. You could also check songs like Queen For a Day pt. 1, Castles and Dreams and Somewhere Over the Sea (The Moon Is Shining). Then a little different recommendation: Emilie Autumn's Enchant album. It doesn't have the Celtic vibes of Loreena but has the fae and fairy tale aesthetic. And btw, it's different to her other music, so if you've either heard her newer stuff or want more like Enchant, there's really not. Specific songs I'd recommend are Across the Sky, Save You, Rose Red and What If.
My Talking Heads hyper-fixation happened at the end of 2023, but followed the exact same arc as what you described, triggered by Life During Wartime. Just a perfect song.
For my 2024 list, in every category, really, just number lines on a sheet of paper and fill in every entry with the Lemon Twigs. Also put the Beach Boys' Girl Don't Tell Me in there somewhere.
Hey, there is no sound for the first 2 song discussed (Eilish & Carpenter). Contrary to the latter songs discussed, no sound is played during the excerpt moments, it just shows album art and silence. Same thing on Nebula.
Love seeing Hollerado in the background there. Also Al Green is my wedding song, and I was not alive when it was released. It is also an always song for me.
I like the retrospective! I also don't listen exclusively to new music each year, but I do latch onto some new albums while I retreat to discographies of old favorites and artists I'm curious about from years or even decades before. This year I had the new Linkin Park album on repeat, and the latest album from English prog-rock duo Sad Night Dynamite (look out for their song Sugabby to hit alt-rock stations). Bands that I've been listening to for a while at this time of the year are Cage The Elephant, Grouplove, Foals and The War on Drugs, and songs that I listened to frequently this year were Talk Too Much by Renee Rapp, Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten, Hooligang by Joey Valence and Brae, and Smile by Wolf Alice.
Hey, big fan, Great Video! Personally been listening to Fishmans non stop 2024, particularly Long Season. It's become one of my all time favourite songs and i saw on tiktok that you also loved it. The video you made on Echoes is honestly one of the best music related videos on UA-cam, but if you were to make a video in that style for Long Season, that would be the best thing ever. Would be so glad if you considered it!
Honestly, thi is the kind of end-of-year list i enjoy the most. I dont get to listen to new (for me) music all that much so having a retrospective from someone who i like to hear talk about music and share at least some vibes with is great.
Was NOT expecting an AJJJ shoutout but especially in the wake of November's election, their album _Good Luck Everybody_ from pre-Pandemic 2020 has been hiiiiiiiitting
I really like your categories for people that don’t keep up with releases. I don’t either, but every once in a while a new release really hits. This years was English Teacher’s Worlds Biggest Paving Slab
Machine girl album has to be my favorite this year. The songs that hit the hardest for me were ass2mars and hot lizard. Highly recommend if you like a hectic over produced sound with a lot of angst
Thanks for your thoughts on music in 2024. I find it very hard to narrow down songs but I found certain new 2024 albums that I really enjoyed: St. Vincent's ALL BORN SCREAMING, Beth Gibbons' LIVES OUTGROWN, The Smile's CUTOUTS, Moby's ALWAYS CENTERED AT NIGHT and Solstice's LIVE: RETURN TO CROPREDY. In terms on albums I bought new this year for the first time - better late than never: Isaac Hayes' HOT BUTTERED SOUL, The Doors' THE DOORS debut, Goldfrapp's FELT MOUNTAIN, Santana's CARAVANSERAI, and Neu!'s debut NEU! album. In terms of albums that I have owned for years but can't stop playing: Elton John's BLUE MOVES and CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY, Joni Mitchell's LADIES OF THE CANYON, Steve Miller Band's BOOK OF DREAMS, Fleetwood Mac's TUSK and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram's LIVE IN LONDON and Fleetwood Mac's TUSK.
The Mummers’ Dance was an absolute staple for me in the late 90s. If you're looking for more things like it, there's plenty of filk (geeky songs about high fantasy, parodies referencing geek culture) that would fit. A prime candidate if you enjoyed The Mummers' Dance would be the band Blackmore's Night. Ritchie Blackmore (founding member and lead guitarist of Deep Purple) teams up with Candice Night for what can only be described as medieval rock.
For me: New artist- Cassandra Lewis: “So Bad” New album by a band I like- The Black Keys: “Ohio Players” Old artist I did a deep dive on- Gordon Lightfoot, such a proliflic songwriter! (Wrote over 800 songs!) Old album I rediscovered: REM: “Monster”(“Crush with Eyeliner” such a wicked guitar tone being run through a tremolo effect.) Old song new to me: Black Sabbath: “Warning” (perfect way to end their first album.)
If you like Mummer's Dance (which I'd never heard before, thanks for the rec it's awesome!) I'd suggest The Amazing Devil. They're an incredible folk duo - not as medieval but they've definitely nailed that sort of fae vibe. Specifically The Horror and the Wild, Old Witch Sleep and Good Man Grace, Elsa's Song and That Unwanted Animal.
I know you basically said you don't make action on recommendations, but I think you would appreciate Church of the Cosmic Skull. And in line with this video, Evil In Your Eye is one of my returning favorites.
A couple of songs that do the same sort of thing to my brain as the Mummers' Dance, both from my childhood, both from Eurovision (i.e. I wish they were twice as long), both feel like sounds that can't be described seeping into reality from worlds that can't exist - Tii by Neikõsõ and Visionary Dream by Sopho. For years, likewise, I've wished more things came close to their vibe. It might be a bit difficult to find good-enough-quality versions of them online; I always used to listen to them on CD.
Song of year for 2024 1. billie eilish Birds of feather 2. maggie rogers in the living room 3. rapsody look what you've done 4. kendrick lamar heart part 6 5. sabrina carpenter bed chem 6. good luck babe chappell roan 7. schoolboy q blue slides 8. sugar in the tank Torres julien baker 9. idkhow sunnyside. 10. The Last Dinner Party Burn Alive
Dig this more casual form of video. Wouldn't mind seeing this kind of review every year. I'm that way with Please please please when it comes to Sabrina Carpenter. only song I really like. Excellent as always! Edit: Check out Faetooth if you haven't heard of them
Mummer's dance reminds me of Edemah Ruh by Nightwish (also as a fantasy fan if you've read the Kingkiller Chronicle it'll be extra special). A lot of other Nightwish songs for me have that fey vibe, between the older stuff and Tarja Turunen's ethereal voice, and the newer stuff with Troy on the pipes
I dont really listen to new music either, but by far my favorite proyect I found this year that actually new is "In the Sun" by YUUF. Highly recommended.
oh damn yeah i love that congos tune. gunna put that back on again. Also despite you never listening to recommended songs i'd highly recc the record that came out last year by 'liam bailey x st francishotel - Enfant terrible' a brilliant dub/soul album.
Mt Fog does sort of fairy like music but with slight electronic feel. They have three albums, the third album slightly more mushroom core if that makes sense.
Based on The Queen's Rebuke, I think you'd like King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard's album Murder Of The Universe (specifically the second chapter, Lord Of Lightning vs Balrog, which has a music video). It has the big epic fantasy storytelling, along with spoken word and heavy, "ugly" guitar sounds (in a very good way!)
Please check out Right Place Wrong Person by RM. The world isn't just usa and uk artists pushed by big labels, many people in the world make even better music.
You mentioned that you got really into Oklahoma while writing your book? PLEASE check out Roadrunner! by Kaitlin Butts. I’ve never heard you speak much on Americana music, but if you like concept albums, I think you’ll really dig it. She’s my honky tonk Chappell Roan
Check out Evolve by East of Eden. For rock check out Band Maid Real Existence live. For Metal check out Lovebites. For stadium rock check out One OK Rock son Mighty Long Fall live. Rock is dead in the USA but lives in Japan.

Hello polyphonic from polyphonic
Hello polyphonic from polyphonic, this is commenter from the comments.
As an Australian it's really awesome seeing someone from overseas appreciating Khe Sanh, it's an Aussie classic
I think he would like Redgum - I was only 19 as well
@@jasonoxley6125 came here to say this

I'd LOVE to see a video focused on Australian pub rock
Vote that up please
Is it music that drunk Aussies listen to when they fight over some sports game?

As an Aussie Kha Sanh is a staple in the Australian music growing up. I strong memory is dad playing it every morning on Saturday’s.
Let's Stay Together was the song for our first dance at our wedding and 12 years later we are, indeed, still together 😊 What a great song
Victory for Australia. Saw cold chisel this year, khe sanh is an all time classic. Good for aussie music to get recognised
I absolutely love Mummer's Dance! Great choice!
Holy shit I gasped when you said Khe Sanh!! Cold chisel is such a good band-my fave song of theirs is Flame Trees. Well worth checking out!
Decemberists are my favorite band they popped off this year with the new album :3
Thank you for introducing me to the Adrianne Lenker. Sad, beautiful, profound songs is exactly what I need right now.
LOREENA MCKENNITT MENTION IN 2024!!! That's so cool that you're listening to her, my mom played her non-stop when I was a kid. She really does have a great essence to her and her music.
You honestly might as well make a Curtis mayfield series with an impressions video, a Curtis video and a superfly video
Ikr. Saw the poster and searching his songs now.
If you search for the word "cool" in any online dictionary, his music should play. Should be mandatory.
Was just listening to Me and Mrs. Jones this morning on my walk to class. Such a beautiful song.
Finally someone who appreciates Ram On as amazing. I've seen so many videos on ram and no one has given it the credit it so deserves
I discovered Australia’s Middle Kids this year and while I love the new album, Needle from their 2019 EP has become the song I return to the most.
Awesome, Loreena McKennitt mentioned, she's one of my favourite artists! She deserves more attention. That version of The Mummers' Dance is actually a remix, so that's why her other songs aren't quite like that.

which album do think is better: Harvest or After The Gold Rush?
