Painted World was designed as a "vertical slice" of the game when it was originally pitched, designed to showcase what the game was largely about, because of that it had an insane amount of care put into its level design to try to showcase the interconnects its of the game and had great enemy/item placement

I think Anor Londo is overrated tho, I never really liked the level design that much and O&S has some extremely strange design decisions that keep me from parading as one of the best bosses in the series

thank you! o&s was just a bs rng boss fight. can't stand that ornstein can basically just spam his dash attack and get stuck on pillars and still somehow hit you. that whole area is just meh and doesn't fit in super well with dark souls' aesthetic. also, are people forgetting about that awful platforming section when you cross narrow beams on the roof with assassins throwing knives at you? or the part with the archers which is just tedious as fuck.

      1. O&S, BS rng boss fight? Also, attacks going through walls is a common theme in all of 'Bloodsouls' , its a glitch more or less.
      2. How does it not fit? Due to it being too light? Kill Gwynevere, you'll realize the light was only an illusion by Gwyndolin and find out how Dark the area really is....
      3. Rafters? I don't see it being 'oh so bad' at all..You take out the first one directly on the left, take out the other one like across the room. Walk towards the middle, take out the Painting Guardian, which is fairly easy, just lock on, slowly walk towards it and it might just jump towards you, then try to headshot another painting guardian and the final one can go down the ladder. Its not hard at all, Infact I've never died to that area or found it tedious, even on my first playthrough. I don't see why the hate is there.

      @FreekinEkin2 5 років тому

But it was just a shitstorm slug through heavily repeated enemies with very bad item placement. The item jump next to the dragon required you to run all around the map every time you missed it. I missed it about 14 times, so I had to run around the whole map about 14 times. For some reason, the area below the jump offers no way back up. There is literally no reason for this. That experience alone would put the Painted World near the bottom of my list, but combined with the trash boss and generic snow atmosphere...

If the framerate wasn't utter shit on consoles, the weird lighting filter wasn't so overdone that it made anything in the distance really difficult to see and if the poison swamp wasn't so annoying with the flying insects, I feel that the area would get the credit it deserves. The design is actually really solid otherwise.
I wish they would hav made the area a little smaller and instead focused on Lost Izalith more, though.

Oh noooo I wanted ash lake as #1. I still never forgot that feeling when I accidentally discovered by checking if that chest behind an illusory wall and finding another illusory wall that lead to a great tree and then that area. It's so... haunting and different even for dark souls areas. The colors and the music are so foreboding it's as if you've stumbled upon a place where you feel very small and you've seen something you're definitely not supposed to be seeing. No other area has replicated the feeling for me in any other soulsborne games not even the workshop in Bloodborne.

Painted World has quality level design up the wazoo. The way all the buildings, narrow paths, walkways, spirals and undercrofts continually twist and bend over and under each other in such a dense, tightly interwoven space is perhaps the best level design in the entire series, and it's definitely the best on offer in Dark Souls 1.

I personally found Sen's Fortress to be my favorite area. It was the unique challenge of it that really set it above the others, with both enemy placement and level design being very prevalent themes. It took me a very long time to ascend the tower, from what I recall, but each time resulted in more knowledge in the area. I liked having to adapt to the area and change the way I actually played the game in order to succeed in it. Rash actions would result in death, so everything needed to be careful and precise. It was definitely my turning point in the game, when I went from hoping that whatever I did worked to actually thinking about how to approach the situations. If Sen's Fortress had be placed later than Anor Londo, I doubt I would have had much success there. Its presence was one of my favorite facets of Dark Souls, as the area felt truly unique and exciting.

It was dying 1000 times before getting the lightning spear - then the are became a joke.

I think the Painted World is praised for two reasons
1- the world is a huge reward for the trials of getting there. You have to fly back to Undead Asylum, find the peculiar doll in the cell you started the game in, and then going to the painting and entering the world like Super Mario 64. It is a lot of work and to have a secret like this is amazing!
2- the level design is probably at its peak, as it really stacks a lot of verticality into a small space. The stairs, the sewer, the dragon, it all is really tight and makes for a lot of exploration.
I think Priscilla and the snow is overrated, but the design of the level and the amount of work to get the area really makes it stand out in my opinion. If you see this, maybe it will give you a new look at the painted world.

blighttown is the most underrated area in dark souls, the place has one of the best level design in the game and it also hold some of the best loots in the game like the light armor crimson set and wanderer set(when fully upgrade) and some of the best pyromancy like power within and fire tempest. Most people hate the area because it is very frustrating and keep getting trouble of being toxic by the blowdart zombie guy, but this can be prevented by keeping yourself cover and prevent fighting off enemy in open which provide some very interesting yet tactical challenge unlike the invisible road in the crystal cave.

To me, Painted World of Ariamis is one of the best areas of Dark Souls. This is partly because of the typical reasons: it's snowy, the area paths are well designed, it's hard if you casual through, but speed-running it is easy with the shortcuts that make it easy to pass, just like Catacombs.
I also like that it is not required. I recently went through it again for the first time since my first ever play-through (this is a couple of years difference). My experience was that Painted World is spooky and creepy (which I like), and I had my shield up the whole time, as I didn't remember where enemies are, and there are many corners they are hiding around.
So, I think playing the area every once in a while, so that you somewhat forget where stuff is, is the best way to experience it. Painted World feels like DLC to me (as in, different and cool) more that any other area in Dark Souls (besides the actual DLC).
The only thing I don't like is that all the loot in Painted World is useless, except to very specific builds.

We had to face an army of the Silver knights both normal and Gravelorded and trying to strategically manipulate them in such a way that we didn't get wrecked truly felt wonderful to best. Both Oolacile Township and The Painted World are extremely atmospheric locations in my opinion. Whereas Ash Lake and Anor Londo are awe-inspiring, the township and Painted World are creepy and unsettling, partly thanks to the sound design. I also think the Painted World is an exellently designed level. While Anor Londo is pretty linear, the Painted World is like a microcosm of the entire world design of Dark Souls.

  • @tonytestosteroni2273
    @tonytestosteroni2273 7 років тому

For me, the Painted World stuck out so much because it was really complex-ish, and felt like I was exploring a castle to an extent. On top of which, it felt like a treasure hunt, and leading hosts through the world to get all of the treasure before we finally took on the boss was extremely rewarding. Literally the only part I don't like about it is the bonewheels, even though I like where you fight them. And I guess the poison-on-death guys if you're not using fire, who shoot shit at you, but still.

  • @thomasstadler3279

For people wondering why The painted World is so high it is because it is the level fromsoft used in there playtesting. It is literally the first area they made in Dark Souls to test out the new engine.

  • @DevramAbyss

Absolutely love the list. My favorite thing about The Painted World is how secret and hidden it is. There's something amazing about discovering this area that you requires you to first somehow find your way back to the asylum, which includes a beefed up version of the very first boss as well as some black knights, and then after finding a mysterious doll interacting with a giant painting in Anor Londo.

I just want to share my experiences with Firelink Shrine. Prefacing this with the fact that this was my first experience with the Souls series and, arguably, my first experience with a game that is actually out to get you.
When I first got to Firelink, I didn't think much of it. It was the hub, I would be coming back here from time to time. However, I grew to enjoy the sense of security that it provided, the fact that it wouldn't try to kill you on sight.
Eventually, I found Lautrec. I didn't expect much of him, he was an NPC, he wouldn't do much. I beat the Gargoyles, then headed back to Firelink, because I thought the New Londo Ruins would be the next area. I get to the Shrine, and, as a matter of habit, go to rest at the bonfire. But then I can't. I didn't draw the connection for some time, because I had never seen Lautrec at the Shrine before. When I learned, revenge against him was one of the things I wanted most.
So, I continue on, making Andre's bonfire my new home. I braved the Depths, defeated Quelaag, found my covenant, and opened Sen's Fortress. On my trek back, I noticed something as I passed through Firelink, something I hadn't felt before. Loss. At this point, I realized how masterfully crafted the story of this game was. I felt actual emotion, some of the most I'd ever felt in a game, from the loss of a checkpoint. But the game, just through the way it worked, made it more than that.
    I ****ing love this game.

  • @chriswinner2096
    @chriswinner2096 7 років тому

In all honesty Painted World should have been first because the reason for its love was because of the fantastic level design, it was the first main region the developers started with and was originally supposed to be a tutorial region and potentially a boss arena for Gravelord Nito, concept was scraped over time but the amount of work was still there so they included the region as a side area. The enemies are mostly unique to that region, the look is nice and the weapons/armor are new and cool and fun to find. The level design is basically like a smaller scale dark souls game because everything in it is interlaced finely and when you play through it one sees that and enjoys the connectivity it has to offer. The boss fight itself is a 'neat' concept but doesn't work as well but hey you gotta get out amiright?
Anor Londo should have been second because while it feels like an epic feat to get there once you realize the region can be described as 'a flat expanse' with few enemies and a lot of walking. Its just uneventful and no really interesting enemies.
That's just my 5 cents on the matter though i respect the communities decision would have been nice if you had known why though, cant WAIT TO SEE THE NEXT ONE!!

Anor Londo is just downright frustrating for me most of the time. The archers and the run back to Gwyndolin fight make it far more tedious than it could have been otherwise. The archers might have a pretty easy cheese to execute once you know about it, but the run to Gwyndolin is just inexcusable. Assuming you kill Gwynevere and all the light goes out, then the Fire Keeper becomes hostile and you're forced to kill her before you get to Gwyndolin, which makes her bonfire useless whenever you die. This coupled with the inexplicable fact that you warp back to the starting bonfire whenever you die means you need to go through the trouble of either going through the annoying gauntlet of painted guardians and narrow walkways to move the centerpiece twice, or run all the way across the map to the chamber of the princess bonfire, and warp to the bonfire in front of Gwyndolin. If there's an easy way to get around this, then it was not made clear whatsoever and getting back to the boss fight becomes just a chore when they could have easily spawned you right in front of the fog gate since there's a bonfire right there.

I really am not a huge fan of Anor Londo, the way I'd describe it is how you described PWoA, I don't hate it, I don't even dislike it, I just find it to be just pretty good but nothing more, maybe it's because I prefer more ruiny places like Oolacile Township and Undead Burg and really naturey areas like Royal Wood and Darkroot Garden than ultra-grand, man-made majestic areas like Anor Londo, but I just don't really get the hype. It looks fairly gorgeous, but what's more mesmerizing is how little there is to do there imo. My top 5 would be:

How did Sen's Fortress manage to place so high? It's pretty much what you would get if the BoC was turned into a level. Walking in a straight line is tricky enough but having to manage axes and enemies on a narrow platform is irritating, especially since when you fall and die you get to start right back at the start. On top of that, once you do get to the top you get to fight a very lacklustre boss that a NPC summon can kill on its own. And unlike some of the lower ranking areas in the game, there's no way to do it faster. There's the back entrance for Blighttown, you can easily run through the Catacombs/Tomb of Giants, you can run through most of New Londo, and you can run through the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith but there's nothing for Sen's. No back entrance that lets you skip the annoying platforming and good luck running past enemies on narrow pathways. It's an area I always loathe going to because I know that there's no way to make it go faster so I can get onto the areas that I actually enjoy. It also doesn't even look that good.

Dark Souls 1 was amazing, definitely the best Souls game in the series. I am recently replaying DS2 on the PS4 and I am enjoying it quite a lot more than the 360 version, DS3 is definitely second best though despite the DLC being kind of disappointing and Bloodborne is to me still the most unique game in the series with easily the best bosses, seriously no boss in this series even comes close to Ludwig and his EPICCC theme!

Eleum Loyce is one of my favorite areas in Dark Souls 2, and I hope it ranks high on the list.
tbh I don't really care for any of the levels at the end of the day in this game, but Undead Asylum is one of the most well crafted tutorial areas in the series and beyond.

I actually really like the Painted World. It has some of the best level design in the game in a small package and finishing it felt quite satisfying to me.
To me Priscilla is an unfulfilled NPC rather than a boss. She is one of my favorite characters in the Souls games and I really wish she had played a bigger role in the game perhaps joining you against some bosses or just available to talk to at a bonfire. She's a sad and lonely girl. That's where her invisibility power stems from. She doesn't want to fight you. She just wants you to leave her alone in peace.
Personally, I wish you could become her friend. I wish there were more options than murdering her or just leaving.
Case and point, Priscilla as a disappointing fight ties into who she is as a character and really should you feel satisfied for murdering her? She didn't do a thing to hurt you. Unless you are really triggered by her description of the denizens of the Painted World.
Those are just my thoughts on the character. Oh, and shame on you for not including her on the waifu list.

I'm honestly kind of surprised that Sens made it so high. Granted, there are worse areas by far, the enemies could be much worse, the traps are a nice touch and the struggle to navigate the pathways can sometimes be tricky...
But the fact that if you fall off one of those pathways leads to instant death and that you have to start all the way at the bottom to repeat everything all over again is mind-numbingly frustrating. I am skilled enough at the game not to worry about that anymore, but it was still a pain in the dick.

I think that there are 4 major "git gud or quit scrub" breakingpoints in the game. I think they make dark souls I what it is. Blighttown is the first, because the undead church can be a bit hard the first time around, its nothing too difficult, but blighttown is literally the place where you need to git gud. Its a 100% (annoying, but fair).
Second breakpoint is Sen's funhouse. You learn useful skills here, like looking around for a way to solve the puzzle and stop the traps, instead of waiting stuff to solve itself and pulling levers that are placed right in front of you. This place teaches you how to think, to explore for solutions instead of banging your head on the rolling boulders.
Third are the archers in Anor Londo, you get lucky, or you learn how to trick them out and then take advantage of their mistakes, like badly timed arrows giving you a chance to attack them and such.
Last is deffinitely O&S. They cheat you how to fight 2 very distinctively different enemies, while making sure its all fair. All fair, because this teaches you to look for advantages, turn the tides in your favor, and keep that advantage, 3 essential traits. Like, examinging their moveset, exploiting the fact that one is always going to be in your face, landing attacks that are easy to dodge, givign you a chance to counterattack, while the other is lagging behind and making sure to punish you if you miss your attack or stop moving.
Dark Souls I is deffinitely the best RPG i have ever played, fuck the witcher, fuck the rest, this is my place.

So I guess I'm the only person who DOESN'T like Painted World? I must just have a sour taste after accidentally ending up there in my first playthrough but I just think there's nothing special about it, Priscilla is a pushover and not to mention the absolute hell you have to go through to get to her (if you don't use the shortcut obviously). Yes I'm talking about the wheel skeletons, yes they are the absolute bane of my existence, shield or not. One thing I will say about it is that it's a hub for soul farming, I think half of my level ups in 100-150 came from the Phalanx.

I fucking hated anor londo. I found it was a bit of a giant gank city, plus it sucked seeing one of the better bosses become a normal enemy, (the gargoyles of the undead church). I agree it looks phenomenal and is a beautiful sight after sens bullshit but I think it could have been done far better had the just thought it out a little more with enemy placement. Also, kind of a side note, but in Twilight Anor Londo, you wake up at the first bonfire if you die to Gwendolyn, (I stupidly got hit with his soul spear) and there’s no lever to call the tower up to you when you wanna do the fight again. So I had to trek back across the bullshit rafters to get there again, only to have the bonfire actually work that time, outside of his boss room. Also, I do appreciate the archer placement and it adds some serious difficulty but they are so cheesable that I actually did it accidentally one time cause I backed off and the followed me to their death. I did like it sort of but god was I ever glad to never go back when I finished with that stupid boss fight. I won’t even share my unpopular opinions on O&S cause I think this comment will get me crucified enough by all the Londo Lovers and I totally respect the people who like it. I just really wasn’t catching the vibes of best area. To me my favourite was Oolacile as a whole, for its own set of reasons. Feel free to respond just please don’t hate on me for it, it’s just my opinion.

I have mixed feelings on anor Londo for one reason. Running. If you suck at the game like me you will spend more time running to the boss fight than actually fighting the two. Now I do still love the area but it loses its charm after a while when you spend so much time running. (Yes I’m that bad)

A Link Between Games Majula is IMO the worst hub area the series. Not bad but the others set the bar higher for me. Frozen Eleum Loyce (The Old Chaos is just the boss arena) is an extremely good area but it's DLC content, not in the main game. I'm pretty sure most people, even those who don't like DS2 agree that the DLC areas are great.

Let's talk about what a shit hole the Iron Keep is. Nevermind that the area makes no sense (seriously, what's a lava-submerged castle doing *above* Earthen Peak/Harvest Valley?). No effort was made into its design; it's completely straightforward with catwalks and platforms that lead to fuck all. The only thing resembling a shortcut means you have to defeat the Smelter Demon, who's the hardest boss in the base game. I would be okay with that, but the whole area is gank central. Just to get to the Demon you have to fight wave after wave of Alonne Knights, dodging projectiles from no less than four archers, and finish that stupid furnace/bridge puzzle. And I've tried running past the knights on that bridge; it's fucking IMPOSSIBLE. Your reward for scraping through this area is a battle against the Old Iron King, who's useless. Seriously, fuck the Iron Keep.

After this I fully realize how meh the individual areas in DS1 were for me. I mean yeah, at least I remember them all (wish I could forget a few, though) not like DS2 where I have trouble to remember 80% of the areas, but the areas are not even close to Bloodborne or DS3. The way everything was connected Really made this game, I can't imagine even liking it if this areas had to be accessed by a hub or were all set in a straight line like DS3 does most of the time. The only areas that stood out for me were Anor Londo, the Painted World, Blighttown and Firelink Shrine, and the latter only stood out because of how it connects everything. Also, it seems Valley of the Drakes was so meaningless you forgot to put it in the rankings and nobody is even complaining.
