Dude i'd say it is because of image maintainance and target audience of nowadays.
Didn't bollywood have actors nowadays from other parts of india too rather than UP, Delhi or Mumbai?
I had forgotten it's name but hollywood produced a movie which has storyline in India and for that they had a white man colored to potray as an Indian.
So yeah world is changing due to cummulative efforts of multiple decisions.

I’m from Chhattisgarh, despite being part of Hindi belt we have zero representation in Bollywood. When I saw Malayalam movie “Unda” I cried my heart out. It was for the first time I saw my state and people being represented so beautifully. They even casted one of the local actor to play an important side character. Music of that film was culturally rooted. And most importantly the movie successfully depicts the struggle of tribals in hands of armed forces and militants.

What has been portrayed through a movie character does leave the perception in people's from other region about the people and their culture which was showcased in that movie.

Wait till you see a South Indian person stereotype you as a “labourer”on your face, the other stereotypes fall short. I don’t mind the stereotype of Bengalis being smart or loving Tagore or even food but just because you have migrant workers from some place calling that place poor and the people who clean our places and do manual labour are from Bengal hurts more :)

Start a grassroot organisation and create public awareness. It's much easier in this era of social media. You can create a video talking about your problems, for example.

As a Maharashtrian recently married to a Tamilian, I can say I had the same stereotypical understanding about South Indians. And its fair to say not only Bollywood every North Indian has this kind of thinking. But now that I'm living in Chennai I must say this is the best place in my view. I have been in Mumbai, Pune, Noida and many other places. But Chennai for me stands out because I had no clue that it is so amazing. I have had most fun here and also discovered I love beaches. I do miss Maharashtrian food but I'm amazed by the variety of food we have here... and the beauty, cleanliness (in comparison to other cities in India), people, architecture, history of this beautiful place. I really had misconceptions about South Indians, I'm glad I married my husband 😁

Only a handful of them (in Bollywood movies) we have seen and we appreciated them too. Usually the story or the content in Bollywood movies doesn’t showcase the unity in diversity as they call themselves Indian cinema.
