- First of all...to all purists:
I KNOW the sound does not match the locos.
I Know that the sync is not perfect.
But I have been four days snipping and clipping, trying to match the sounds as much as I can.
All I can say is...it has got to be better than the copyright free music.
If it hasn't worked for you , then just turn the sound down...I have tried my best to do something different.

A very enjoyable video from 1967 and nice memories for me from that era when I use to visit Manchester Victoria to see the steam locos while visiting an Aunt in the area during my summer school holidays. Thanks for sharing. Regards - Allan.

Dear David
It went eastward to just outsidef Guide Bridge where 26052 took over for a run over the Woodhead line to Sheffield Victoria.Meantime 70013 was turned and engines were changed again on the return.It took the train to Hellifield via Bolton and Blackburn.The train had started and finished at Edinburgh.Return was via Carlisle, Kilmarnock, Stirling and the Forth Bridge!

Bah Humbug to the purists, Dave you have done a brilliant job and I know how hard it is to add the sound afterwards - I always do with my videos. I watched this on the TV and the projector sound threw me a curved ball. I am just loving these as it was my growing up period and back in South Africa we just lost them and this takes me back to what I was reading about in various train magazines that I was spending precious pocket money on - smiling; as a developed a childhood layout. Bring them on mate they are great. Have a wonderful weekend and take care.
Once again.....a stunning comment for which I thank you very much. When I first started to add the soundtrack, I had bits all over the place, and getting confused as each minute passed. At one time I wished I had never stated it, but I walked away from it for a while...then went back did a bit more. I was like that for about four days, until eventually things seem to fall in to place. Thank you for your comment on the projector sound, it is surprising what you can find on the internet, and thought it was an ideal intro to the film.

Fantastic job Dave! Theres a huge amount of effort gone into putting sounds to these wonderful old clips. A little bit of mismatching actually adds to the authenticity of it all. Sometimes theres a line, wobble or jump in the old cine film that makes for imperfect pefrection so to speak, 9.1 Dolby prologic surround sound would ruin it completely!
Again, some superb clips and shots from an era now lost to history, and thanks to your good self, we can all enjoy it. Thank You very much for taking the time to weave it all together...the results are captivating.

I do agree though, as you pointed out....a lot of effort and concentration went in to the final edit. Also a lot of other details which are too long to mention here. The main thing is, thankfully you (and a few more), have noticed and appreciated the work done...that is all that matters to me.
The video is now out there, anyone in the future wishing to research the railways back in the 1960's, hopefully will find my film helpful.

David, I was transfixed to my seat. Basically in admiration of adding some loco sounds to what would otherwise be a silent film. You pretty much managed to match the sounds to the manoeuvres on the screen - no mean feat. Enjoyed watching very much. Cheers, Brian
PS: I'm hoping to visit the sheds at Old Oak Common next weekend on their open day. Hope they've got the odd King and Castle to film.
Thank you Brian for your very kind words. It was a task at times I wish I hadn't started. I downloaded 5 different tracks, then cut and spliced them to try and match the scene. It is nowhere near perfect, but pleased at least one person (you) enjoyed it......thank you Brian.
I did very much. You certainly had some fantastic opportunities to film these last days of steam. I recall passing the Barry scrapyard in 1963 (at 11 years old) on my way to Fishguard to catch the ferry to Rosslare in a force 9 gale. The sight of rows of silent chimneys and rusting locos that we passed that day stays with me. If you have more footage like this I look forward to watching it.
There maybe some, but it means me plowing through all my 50ft. spools, I may get round to doing that when I am in the nursing home (with nothing else to do).
Anyone here have good knowledge of Doncaster Station between 1965-1968 (+ - 1 yr)? I use to spot there roughly in that timescale (I seem to remember us lads trying to spot all the Deltics at the time which in the end I managed to do). One engine I have fond memories of was I think at the end of its useful life and shunted backwards and forwards. It was so old you could see it wobble left to right at from the front when you looked down a straight. That sticks in my mind and for some reason I thought it was Lord Rodney (30863) but I have never found any evidence this southern region engine ended its life in Yorkshire. One of those memories that keeps coming back and never gets resolved!
not very likely that Southern LN would have ended up in Doncaster. The LN's were all withdrawn by 1962 I think the only LN i copped was 30850 Lord Nelson when it was in store at fratton and Stratford. There was a Jubilee 45643 called Rodney..
Yup, sure do. I used to travel from Leeds Central Saturday mornings to Donny for a days spotting. Walked to the shed 36A and every time got round without any hassle whatsoever. EX WW11 servicemen now on the ralway were great figures, and loved the kids spotting, just like surrogate fathers after what they had been through.
Saw my favourite (60105 Victor Wild) dead on the scap line at front of the shed, waiting to make its last journey. The non stop rattling through causing a hurricane of litter as the A4 chime rang out.
Lost my return ticket one day and kind people gave me money for a ticket back to Leeds and the bloke in the ticket office made up the rest. Great days, Great people. Memories etched in my mind forever. :-)

All those teenagers standing on the tracks saying "Wot's elf and safety ?" I have photographs I took at Victoria twenty years after this in 1987 and it doesn't look a lot different.
raynet21 For anyone visiting Manchester today, it is very different; but it’s worth a short detour as the impressive frontage still remains with the lovely canopy outside the front entrances. Inside you can still see the famous old, tiled Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway mural of the company’s routes.
It looks have changed over the years and only a former shadow of itself and I remember the subway that went under the platforms and wonder if it is still there hidden away and blocked of or filled in.
I've just come on this.Im wondering about the date as I was on a special behind Oliver Cromwell which passed through Manchester Victoria on 1 June 1968- the day before my 20th birthday and45156 was in the station that day as well!
Where did 70013 go from Manchester Vic., as I went on to Guide Bridge to film it passing through. Sorry to be so vague on the date, but cannot be sure it was the same time as your charter.

Don't do yourself down . Without the far-sighted people who took these films , we would all be the poorer. Synch sound or not , it's better than awful musac !
