I love how the kelpie's true form is reflected in the water. Also, I don't know why, but I love that the kelpie murdered and probably ate the camera man. It just gives it a pretty classic horror feel to it all.
It's hard to say. Truth be told, most kelpies were known for luring people through their horse form and drowning them in the waters to eat them later. They could also shapeshift into handsome young men mainly seeking women for companionship--but somehow or other, they were usually recognized for what they truly were and the romance would fail.
Pebble Pellets True, there is a breed of dog called a kelpie, but in the case of this video and mythological folklore, a kelpie is a violent shape-shifting water spirit who usually takes the form of a horse in order to lure people to ride on his back (generally kelpies are male) so he can drown and eat his victims. Kelpies could also shapeshift into handsome young man in order to seek the companionship of young women.
I don't know why, but this animation just feels so natural. To me, it doesn't paint the kelpie out as a horrible monster, but rather just a creature living it's natural life in it's natural habitat. Kelpie are such amazing mythical creatures. A lot of old mythical creatures seem to have lost their place in mythology, and just become plastic interpretations of childish creatures dancing on rainbows (or have been forgotten completely, like the piasa,) but the Kelpie remains the same haunting, terrifying, yet still beautiful beast it always was.
Agreed! Plus it's able to blend the horror elements with it being an animal in it's natural habitat beautifully too - like the kelpie is a predator of humans, but it's not out of malicious intentions and moreso because of it's nature. If this short was the precursor to a movie, series, and/or videogame at some point, it'd be cool if the theme of the overarching story would be about humanity's hubris in thinking that they're cut off from nature just because we live in "civilizations"/cities - when what makes us an animal species has never truly left.
@@MariaDigs Kelpie are monsters from Sottish lore. On land they take on the form of a beautiful white horse luring humans to it to ride them. Once on, they trap and drown them returning to their original very terrifyingly hideos form in water.

The Kelpie is my absolute favorite thing/creature/mythical creature in the world. I can always be found talking about it or drawing it in different ways (fish tail, four legs, horse skull, normal head with sharp teeth, gills, no gills, etc). For a science presentation I made an educational presentation all about the facts of the kelpie and how to "keep safe" from one (how to tell by the wet mane and never climb atop a strange horse by some water). I've gone so far as to draw plans for an imaginary fish tank with bullet proof glass that could keep a Kelpie from escaping and not eating people but still have one as a pet.(Most girls want a unicorn but my dream is to own a equine that turns into a creature of nightmares) obviously that is just fun. But my sketch books and short stories are filled with kelpies. Thank you SO much for making this. It's one more link about kelpies I can spam my best friend with.
Utterly stupendous! I can tell that a lot of love and dedication went into this project (the cameraman possibly becoming Kelpie Chow was genius), so I have placed it in my British Ghost Stories and Dark Faery Lore playlist.
Fun fact: You can eat Kelpie, its meat tastes like a combination of beef and tuna, which tastes better when it's grilled. Its mane is actually aquatic plants, and preparing is similar seaweed which gives it a nice crunch.
