Hello everyone, hope you’re all well and have had a good month so far!! Apologies for the lack of uploads recently! (no I haven’t given up with UA-cam or given up the allotment plot lol!) I’ve been so busy with work & my business lately I haven’t had the time to edit & upload anything! 🥲 Short video for you today, but promise we’ll have a proper catch up in the next one! (I actually filmed this one on October 2nd, a lot has changed since then 🫣). Longer video & October tour coming up on Monday 👀 Hope you have a good weekend! See you next week! 🥰💖✨
Seren, as the Nettle Queen 👑🌿 you may know this already, but if not: nettles are super healthy to eat as they're very high in vitamins and minerals, most notably iron! 💪 Their young growth also goes BRILLIANTLY into autumnal soups - leek & potato & nettle soup is next level 🤤 Defo something to take advantage of! 💚
Those carrots looked beautiful on camera. Such a shame they were affected by carrot root fly. Those dahlias have been spectacular for you. The yellow one particular, it’s just stunning.
Seren if there's someone nearby that is raising chickens, those carrots will be a good addition to the chicken feed. Some people make a pesto out of the carrot leaves. Haven't tried it myself but some people love it. The parsnip leaves, dried, are good for making veggie stock or flavouring soups. I have made green tomato relishes, some with hot peppers added. That manure looks quite "green" so I suggest you put it somewhere to decompose more before adding it to the beds. First thing is to plant a few bean seeds in it to test for "Grazon" which is an herbicide that ruins veg plants. You can tell by the leaves that curl up very tightly.
I have had success just hanging the tomato vines in the greenhouse when I removed the plants. For next year I have bought some Longkeeper variety, will be interesting
Toms will ripen off the plant slowly without a banana, when I use a banana to speed the process I us a fresh one and put the toms in a fruit net/bag on top to keep the circulation of air. Those mushrooms appear to be Honey Fungus but never accept an internet identification.
Seren, I wouldn't have eaten the carrots either. It's okay to compost what you don't want. Yes carrot root fly can overwinter in the soil. Also, my research told me it actually is not recommended, particularly if you are in a group of people with impaired immunity, to eat veg that has been nibbled by rodents, in your case because you don't know exactly what nibbled it. You rationale is completely valid. Dahlias should continue to bloom until the tops freeze if you have enough daylight hours. They are lovely paired with the snapdragons.
Got this from another UA-camr....she had an allotment and she was planting her carrots....interspersed with onions. Seems that onions and carrots each have a particular type of fly....BUT! the onion fly is repelled by carrots....AND.....the carrot fly is repelled by onions. So, plant them in alternating rows! Hope it helps!
I’m with you on the spiders that are out this time of year….desperately need to get in the garden to tidy up but there are sooo many I just can’t bring myself to go out there at the moment! 😂
I was thinking you need to buy a wagon, there are all sorts but it would help in toting things like treasures from the scrap heap and loads of veges. 🙂
Hello! I've always found with tomatoes that they need to have a little bit of 'blush' on them before taking them from the vine in order for them to ripen at home. I don't think I've ever seen a totally green tomato ripen after being picked! I've loved seeing your journey with the allotment so far and I've just gotten my own (very overgrown) allotment :) xx
I think you are right! They need a lil bit of a head start before being picked otherwise they just will not turn red 🥲 Thank you so much for watching!! Ahhhh that’s so exciting 😍 good luck with your new plot, you’re going to love it!! 💖
Fried Green Tomatoes have a similar texture to fried eggplant. I was not a major fan of them due to my dislike of tomatoes, but I was pleasantly surprised. Considering they are both nightshades.
Hello Seren, are your potatoes 'Pink Fir Apple' variety ? Small, but the flavour will be worth it. Cover your carrot planter next year with the really fine insect exclusion mesh that looks like net curtains, can be bought on Amazon etc, and that will keep the adult flies out. Real shame as you had a huge harvest of carrots for your container. Happy gardening and enjoy your dahlias until the first frost. Best regards, david
Thanks so much for watching David! Yes, better luck next year with the carrots 😅🫣 oh well! Yes they were the pink Fir Apple! I have not tasted them yet 👀 I’m very excited to taste them though! I’ve only heard good things! I was just surprised as to how small they were 😂🥔
I think the stuff that was growing with the carrots that looked like parsnips may have been leaf celery(?) not sure what it's called in English but it's a variety of celery that makes mostly foliage and not the big stalks, it's used for garnishing soups and stuff. Not absolutely sure but it kind of looks like it and in my garden it grows like a weed and I have no idea where it comes from
I have some friends who take green tomatoes, remap them in newspaper and store them for a month or so and they ripen in time for Thanksgiving (in the U.S.). They do say however that they don’t taste the same as a freshly picked tomato from the garden, they are more like tomatoes from the grocery store.
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Oh my the cabbage is being eaten badly. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.😊
Always a pleasure to see a new video from you, Seren, whenever you have the time! You might have me convinced to grow potatoes and leeks next year as it is my favourite soup.😊
I wouldn't eat those wormy, aphid infested carrots either. You could use the compost from that container on the garden somewhere, but definitely not for carrots. Since you don't have a compost hot enough to kill the carrot fly lavae, I would take them off the allotment and put them in the rubbish. Ah, the things we gardeners are faced with! Anyway, great to see another video of you in your plot ❤
Next season bury the carrot seeds with radishes and chives. The chives help keep away the carrot root fly and the radish is in and out in 4 weeks giving the carrots a hole to grow in to. Great work on your plot too. From NZ.
Small container = smaller potatoes. But that's a good harvest I think. Pink Fir Apple are a great potato (assuming that's what they are) - main crop but eats like a new potato. Apparently they store well too without sprouting so you can save a few for next year. I think a 30 litre container or bigger is best if you are going to grow potatoes in containers. For me my pink fir apple were easily the best of my potato harvest this year.
I'm from the southern United States where fried green tomatoes are really popular, and they hace ZERO appeal to me too. Also, when storing tomatoes that aren't ripe, a few things: Make sure they aren't in a warm or humid spot. (It's not as much of an issue for tomatoes that have started to color up to be warm, but you don't want that for green ones.) There needs to be good airflow, like with anything else you don't want to rot. Also, if you can, store them in the stem end. Tomatoes ripen from the blossom end going up, so that end will get soft sooner than the rest. Be careful not to drop or squeeze them as the bruising will cause them to rot.
They’re Dr Martens boots in a shade called raspberry I think! Look on eBay / Vinted 👀 I didn’t plant Christmas potatoes, but have noticed I am gonna have a few plants to dig up in a month or so 😂 unintentional Christmas spuds! Hope your harvest is successful! 😋🥔💖
Disappointing to see how much of your allotment produce is damaged or inedible. All the hard work for nothing. As you say, lessons learned for next year.
It's not really nothing, but there are always things to learn with any gardening. Soils are so different from place to place, water tables are low or soggy. Next year will improve.

looking at junkpiles and seeing the value of things, my kind of human 😏
Someone has never had a good fried green tomato. That’s tough
So many treasures in the junk pile!!! 😍 That bbq looks a bit like a cauldron. Lucky find!

The weed growing with the carrots is common buttercup. 👍
Get the poop!!!! ❤❤❤❤
The poop has been acquired!! 😂💩

I ripened my tomatoes in a large paper bag with a banana in it too. Must’ve been 100 tomatoes and only 3 or 4 rotted.
Great job

Thank you so much for watching! Yes of course, plenty more to do at the allotment = plenty more videos to make! 😂
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Oh my the cabbage is being eaten badly. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.😊
Thank you so much for watching & subscribing 🥰 it’s lovely to have you here! Ahhh yes.. my poor cabbage 🫣😂 I’ll have better luck next time … 😂
I was once given green tomato jam, and it was SO good! I think I will try make some of that with my green tomato.
I too went to harvest 2 carrots and ended up pulling all of them. :) So satisfying. I loved seeing yours all in a row.
Always a pleasure to see a new video from you, Seren, whenever you have the time! You might have me convinced to grow potatoes and leeks next year as it is my favourite soup.😊
Make salsa verde from your green tomato’s

Oooh that’s very interesting! Thank you for the tip! I will definitely try this combination next year 🥰 thank you so much for watching!
Maybe they are fingerling potatoes and they should look like this. Your using a stick to get the fork made me laugh. I hate spiders too. ❤
Wow look at your leeks, love leek and potato soup!!
Ps I love the dahlia that looks a bit like an egg 😂 do you recall what the variety is?
I am sooo happy with my leeks 🥲 leek & potato soup is the best 😋
@@doras.allotmentegg 😂😭 I think that was one of the mystery random seed dahlias I’m afraid 🥲
sawdust is meant to help with smelly/over moist compost bins
its also because compost needs carbon.
Sawdust, paper, cardboard, leaves 🫡 all currently being acquired for my stinky compost 😂
@@serensgarden you forgot the peg for your nose lol
Great to see you back and full of busy

For stinky compost: ash and charcoal.

Peppermint oil for spiders
the bugs are just extra proteine.
You and I are of the same mindset I wouldn't eat bug infested anything ❤❤❤❤
ooo where are your pink boots from please, love them! I need to dig up my Christmas potatoes this weekend, hopefully haven’t left it too late whoops

Hi new sub here great video shame about the carrots they looked realy good
You mentioned your tomato plants were blighted, that might explain your tomatoes going mouldy next to bananas
I watched someone make a green tomato pie recently. She said it tasted just like an apple pie. It might be worth checking out.
Woahhh! That sounds bizarre.. but I also really want to give that a go? 😂
Thanks so much for watching! 🥰💖
@@serensgarden If you do end up making a pie, please let us know what you think of it.
You are very pretty and your garden is wonderful
Need bigger containers for your potatoes.
Is that parsley?
Yes carrot root fly will be in your compost so dont grow carrots in it again!!!
Grow something non;rooty where the carrots were.
Dont reuse the compost
Just use gloves and harvest what is ripe. The spiders can't touch your hands that way. They are eating nasty stuff.
You need to make friends with someone who has Guinea pigs - trade dodgy veges for poop
boil the carrots and they would be fine.....such a waste
freeze and then boil. plus soda water for cleaning.
