  • Emmaus. Time travel
    Emmaus was first mentioned in the 2nd century BC. in the Maccobean book in connection with the Maccobean victory over the Greek army. Then the Maccobees liberated the Temple Mount and Jerusalem.
    Josius Flavius ​​mentions Emmaus many times in his writings and reports the destruction of Emmaus by the Romans in 4 BC.
    Devastated by the Romans, Emmaus turned into a small village. In this capacity, he is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, which describes the meeting of Jesus with his two apostles.
    In the II century. Romans and Samaritans settled in Emmaus. Emmaus flourished. During this period, Emmaus was renamed Nicopolis by the Romans.
    During the era of Byzantine rule, Emmaus turns into a developed city. Here, at the place where Jesus broke bread, a temple is being built.
    In the 7th century these lands were conquered by the Turks and Emmaus received the Arabic name Amwas.
    In the era of the Crusades, the Christian presence in Emmaus resumed, the Byzantine temple was restored.
    In 1879 the site of Emmaus was purchased by the Carmelite monastery. And now it is a place of pilgrimage.
