- The notion of light tanks emerged during the First World War as a cost-effective alternative to their larger, heavier counterparts. Initially designed to offer a lighter, more economical option for the front, their reign was short-lived. Technological progress and the emergence of the improved heavier tank models swiftly rendered light tanks obsolete in primary combat roles. As they were mothballed or relegated to secondary duties, new avenues for their utilization were explored. One such light tank adapted for a niche task was the British Light Tank Mk.VII, commonly known as the Tetrarch. Despite being declared obsolete and recalled from the front in 1941, three years later it began to be employed once again, in airborne assaults.

Better than nothing and considering the technology of the time, probably the best they could gets.
The real question is : was the light tank a good idea, to start with?
@@chefchaudard3580
Ask yourself, which would I rather be, Light Tanker or Infantry.
@@KARLMARX56 a tank is a magnet for antitank weapons. And with a paper thin armour and a pop gun… well…
The Phrase in the thumbnail, 'Could You Please Oblige Us with a Bren Gun' reference?
Indeed
M46 Patton I video when?
Alecto was build on Tetrarch as used in India after WW2
Alecto was based on the Harry Hopkins (Light tank, MK VIII). It remained in prototype stage and never entered service.
The name Tetrarch is also used to denote the head of a Macedonian cavalry unit, which is why it was chosen as the name of a racehorse called "The Tetrarch". The Tetrarch became famous in the interwar period and is considered today as one of the fastest horses of the 20th century. A horse so famous it had a race named after him the called the "Tetrarch Stakes", which is still running to this day. I believe that most people of the day knew that this tank was named after a racehorse. so much so that in 1954 a descendant of The Tetrarch was given the name Purdah! which was the name given to the prototype of the Tetrarch Tank.
Can you do something about the sound level? Every single video you do I have to turn the sound up!
😂😂😂life is so hard
This was an interesting video
The Locust’s cousin across the pond
They could have been of more use to the Paras as 3” close support CS versions but the weight could have been better used in Hamilcar gliders by a Universal carrier and 6 Pounder towed anti tank gun. The Tetrach was a tank in search of a role.
For reconnaissance the British army chose to abandon tracked vehicles for wheeled ones and used the Stuart in the role for armoured regiments but found them equally unable to cope with enemy tanks so employed the normal medium gun tanks for which they were equipped to maintain and use whilst infantry ones stuck with the wheeled armoured cars.
why is this so quiet? i have the volume up to max to be able to hear it :L
What about American M3 Halftrack
What about it? This is about the Tetrarch being an Airbourne light tank.
Hey There will there be vidoes about new things at EUROSATORY 2024 ?
"rendered light tanks obsolete in primary combat" not so! While pre-war light tanks were obsolete, the concept was still sound. Just mount a modern gun on a chassis with a modern engine and just put the minimal turret armor and you've got an effective light tank. After all, if you can stand 25 mm shells smacking your superstructure and you have good speed, you have a niche in combat that a fully armored tank won't fit in, while conversely you wouldn't want to 1 vs 1 your heavier counterpart.
During wwII they put modern guns in light tanks in the form of lots of casemate tank destroyers or the american ones with turrets. Armor was used very aggressively during wwII so more armor might have been seen as a worthwhile way to protect the crew. To make a light tank with a big gun it needs a bigger turret so the designers at the time might have just opted to make it a medium tank instead
@@jebreggie4225 A medium tank minus most of its armor will move faster. That won't be good for head on tank vs tank fights, but it can fill the niche light tanks served in 1939 and 1940.
This comment has all the intelligence of Binkov's video saying turtle tanks aren't crap (ie none at all)
I agree but my interpretation of what he said was compared to more modern MBTs.
British Scorpion was probably the best example, they are awesome.
✌️🍀
A great tank ... for 1930, not 1940
Yes, the concept is sound ; Tanks suddenly appear in my backyard with no sound, until too late to stop them . Todays wiesel is highly effective...we think.
ANY tank is a threat to unsupported infantry.
Bricks and sandbags are useless against a 37mm.
It looks like a toy, with all the wheels being the same size.
As a general rule , the para's didnt like them , as they attracted too much fire .
NO SOUND.
