One thing that didn't occur to me until recently is that the shadow is what is completely unknown to us. Therefore, to acknowledge and accept those parts of ourselves visible only to others is what is required to work with the shadow. This is what necessitates relations with others. As much as some of us would like to be able to go utterly alone in this world, connecting only with nature and spirit, one cannot see one's shadow at all unless looking into the mirror of another.
