My father stayed here in 1943 as a british army serviceman. After the battlefields of North africa, his memories of the clean sheets and plentiful food remained with him all his life.
Great hotel, must stay there, at least once in my life!!!

How thrilling! Was your father a spy? Because the Avenida Palace in Lisbon was one of busiest spying hubs in Europe, being Portugal a neutral country during WW II. There are several books and films about that. All the best, I hope you fulfill your wish.

A true gem of a hotel that provides excellence, and an eye for detail coupled with a unique experience to clients.

Hi, unfortunately he wasn't a spy, he was was an ordinary artilleryman, who was suddenly transferred home. A diplomatic flight had an empty seat so he was pushed aboard. He thoroughly enjoyed the long flight home right across Africa, and long stop overs in Lagos and Portugal. He couldn't believe the luxury the real diplomats travelled in but did not resent them. They were all pulling together during the war and doing their bit.
The waiter in the Avenida hotel took pity on Dad and gave him huge helpings. He always told us at home after the war about the huge slices of chocolate cake he was served in the hotel.
Dad was really impressed with Portugal and Lisbon and the people but never had the chance to return.
I promised my wife that we would have a holiday in the Avenida....until I saw the prices....but we will stay at least a couple of nights.
Thank you for your interest. Dad would have appreciated it.
