When people feel a longing and desperation for love after being rejected, it can sometimes fester into a very dark selfishness and disbelief fueled by insecurity (i.e. "Don't tell me, don't tell me no"). This can result in inconsiderate behavior towards the love interest and victimization of one's self, placing blame on the other person for making them look like the 'bad guy/girl' ("Now I'm looking like the bad cop"). Phoenix did say this album was coming from a "dark place", after all.
