  • If you are tired of broken or junk lawn broadcast rotary spreaders and want the best this is it. See why this spreader is largely unknown and top pick from PGA and lawn and turf care professionals. It costs a bundle but you can see why it's worth it and maybe you can find one cheap!

Just bought a single family home with a yard and had to pull the trigger on this. Paid $1.1k but lawn services charge $600 a year to fertilize/seed here. I know this will last a lifetime and I’ll make the money back (or at least telling myself this will make me feel better 😅)

I just picked up one of these for $15 used. It in rough shape and was used to spread salt in the winter 😥. It's old as the hopper is fiberglass but I am hoping I can bring this back to life. Thanks for this great video and review.

When i first watched this video a few years ago i was shocked. Thinking finding a $1200 for $150 isn't real. Then this Saturday i was driving home and i saw this spreader on the this of the road in my neighborhood. I thought that someone really care about their lawn care, because of this video i knew the spreader. As i drove past there was a sign that read FREE. I jumped out to car threw it in the back and drove home! Told me wife what i found an of course she didn't believe how much it retails for. Although its in working order I'm currently in the process of finding a few parts to restore it to its former gory!

Great video and review. I’m on the hunt for a new spreader. My older Scott’s got damaged in moving last year. So, I purchased a new Scott’s with the edge guard. The larger model. Anyway, it is a poor design, the rotor is slightly below the wheels and what this does is, it prevents the material from deploying properly. Using a 4 foot gap (5 feet is recommended) between passes the yard now has a 2 to 3 foot pail stripe and a 2 foot or less really dark stripe because the material hits the tops of the wheels and drops in between them making for a narrow and highly concentrated placement of fertilizer. I like to acquire good tools within a mindset of usage and budget, but this spreader has really got my attention. With 17,000 sq. ft. of zoysia grass and somewhat rough terrain, this spreader looks quite attractive. Thanks for the video.

Great spreader but homeowners and landscapers should go cheaper. This shines with greens grade granule sizes . Unless your cutting at .500 or lower your not going to need the small granule sizes as much .

Looks like an awesome spreader. That price tag though, ufff. I bought a 50lb Lesco spreader about 5 years ago and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'm just DIY. It does everything I need it to, plus it's far far far superior than box store spreaders. Very well made as well, just missing a lot of the features of this one, but I'm just doing my yard, I don't need it to be dead on accurate like the pros do.

Also, are the internal gears plastic on yours? Thanks!

Thank you very much, I was very lucky to have found it, and I drove a LONG way too. I have owned some Lescos and they aren't terrible but the Anderson models are much better. The SR2000 is the ultimate in this video. They now have that LCO-1000 that I received for a review which you can see on my channel. It is just as nice as the SR2000 but the two difference are no cone and no side deflector. But the price is almost 1/2 so it's really a good value for someone that wants a top quality unit. The gears are identical in both models.

Great video. I am considering ans Anderson Lesco & Spyker spreaders. They all have their unique issues. I have read the Anderson gears are terrible compared to the Lesco. Also the open/close lever rattles, moves and does not completing close the holes letting material flow out when transporting. I agree with finding the Anderson t price and condition you did was a great find, but at full price I think it has issues that should not exist at that price point.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  3 роки тому

I have seen some of those comments. Keep in mind every golf course and high end pro. Almost worldwide uses the Sr2000. Gears wear out over time maybe a very long time and they are under $20 for replacements but I think when people see worn our gears the thought is they are junk. There is no better spreader anywhere than the sr2000 it’s also the most expensive so it should be. I owned a Lesco I found it mediocre and accuracy is not as good because of the patented cone the sr2000. Does all of this matter, maybe not but if you want the best it’s not the Lesco

@@SilverCymbal Thnaks for the reply. I want again to say if I found the deal you did I would have bought that Anderson too, but to pay the exonerate price they want for a new one and it still has quality issues is a bit much. I don't mind paying for high equipment, I have many commercial grade items and will pay up for high quality, but they must be high quality. I mentioned several issues with the Anderson, but the one with the gear box is they a plastic, yes a high grade plastic and greasable, but still issues with slipping, not meshing well, causing problems with spreading, etc. And some have replaced the gears with new and still ave issues. Perhaps bad bash, thing is imo that is a weak point especially for the price they ask. Yes you can buy new gears, how often, do you really want to do that. Sometimes there is a good design reason to have one plastic gear and that is that is the designed weak point to break before damaging the whole gearing and motor. That is how a high end kitchen Aid mixture is designed, It has one plastic gear among its metal gears that is designed to break if the machine is overburden. I personally know this because I did it and fixed with a new plastic replacement from KitchenAid. The Anderson is all plastic and no motor, no reason for it to be all plastic or even one plastic gear. I shouldn't have to pay such a high price to have to replace the gear box every so often because they didn't want to use high grade metal gears that will last a lifetime if properly maintained. I don't have a golf course, ballpark level smooth yard. I have mountainous rough terrain, so this spreader will have to handle that abuse and stress.
After all that I still may end up with a Anderson if I come across a used one that is reasonably priced as you did, but as for a new one, it is not justifiable at that price. I personally know professional landscapers, nurseries, etc who use all 3 spreaders mentioned and each has its issues, so to state that the Anderson has no issues or problems is not factual and misleading. If not properly maintained your nice SS Anderson will rust just like the cheap big box $100 steel spreader. There are all grades of SS and they still need to be properly maintained to prevent rusting, but the cheaper SS may look shiny, but will still rust as well as the bolts and screws.
I'm a scientist so I research and look at data objectively and in doing so with these spreaders I am weighing the pros and cons against, cost, durability, maintenance, ease of use, clogging issues, etc. I understand the Anderson cone system is a pro for many professionals, but that pro does not outweigh some of its faults especially for my intended use. Also the patent has expired and is now open for public use, which allows other brands to use it if they want too. That will nullify one of the advantages of the Anderson.

I also routinely load this thing all the way too. Sounds like you are on your way to finding something that works.

Thanks for the honest review. I am the Product Manager at The Andersons and I get a lot of good information on our products when I find unbiased reviews on UA-cam like this. I've worked closely with these spreaders for about 18 years. You got a great deal and did a real good job on fixing this spreader up. I can tell you that that spreader is at least 4 years old or more. You can tell exactly how old by the lot code punched on the bottom of the hopper. It should be a date. I just visited EarthWay yesterday. They have a new CEO and they are doing a lot of great things. Any suggestions for improvements on this model would be greatly appreciated. When ever I get the chance to talk to an end user I like to get feedback on what could be done to make these even better. The design is decades old with only a few changes over the years. There are new technologies that might help use reduce the costs a little without having any effect on their performance or quality. I've included a link to our website. We don't sell to end users but you can look for distributors on the site and if you need any information on spreaders or copies of the manuals they can be found here. If anyone has any questions just call The Anderson in Maumee Ohio and ask for me. andersonsplantnutrient.com/turf/sports-turf/products/spreaders.

      Clair,

@@TMG363 I understand. These spreaders were designed for professional use on golf courses or for lawn care companies who use them on many lawns on a daily basis. Most home owners don't need a walk behind spreader this big or this expensive. We do sell a less expensive model called the Yard Star. I believe it's still more than $200. It is a completely different design though. It's more comparable to the EarthWay 2150 then to our professional spreaders. It's still designed for medium sized or larger lawns. My lawn is only 3,000 square feet and it was too big for mine.

Clair Engelbert Thanks for the reply but I’m looking at the competitors like Chapin/Agri-fab who offer machines for $150-$250 for the person who has about an acre of yard to do and doesn’t have the need for a pull behind unit. I’ve used both of their units and they don’t spread evenly nor handle slightly wet material.
Most of the technology this unit is showing this unit is made of plastic which would help keep the pricing reasonable. I understand stainless steel is expensive, What’s your alternative materials for the expensive pieces that would bring this more in line with the consumer in mind.
I have an old Lesco which I purchased on craigslist with a permagreen agitator. This set up is phenomenal. The manufacturer like you or Lesco should consider bringing something in the price range I said earlier to market. You will dominate!

@@TMG363 Thanks for the feedback. The division of The Andersons I work for manufacturers fertilizer and pesticides for golf, lawn care, and the agriculture markets. The spreaders are a compliment to that business which is why they are mainly designed for professional use. We have recently ventured into Amazon which has exposed us to more home owners. It's not new to us, but it's historically been a smaller part of our business. I can say there are no current projects in place for an Andersons consumer spreader but things constantly change. EarthWay has done a lot of work with designing spreaders that apply with more accuracy. The Yard Star I mentioned is made by EarthWay for us. They have different models at different price ranges. They might be worth a look for you. They also have a model line called Prizelawn that might be something close to what you are looking for. www.earthway.com/product-category/prizelawn/

I have no issue spending the money for high quality tools, I have many commercial grade tools for home use only. I like quality and will pay up for it if indeed the quality supports the cost. But this spreader does not have the quality to demand such a high cost. It has several quality issues. One being the open close lever, which rattles and moves so the drop holes will not remain closed in transport.. Another is a weak agitator which breaks. The grate is screwed in place, which makes it difficult to remove especially in the field unless you carry the necessary tool. But the biggest flaw is an all plastic gear box, which has issues causing erratic gear motion. For the price demanded it should have high grade metal gears that last a lifetime. Not cheap plastic gears that have a lifetime guarantee because they need to be replaced. Proof of that is that the gears only cost $20 so what do you think the manufacturer pays for those plastic gears and then charge a exorbitant price for the spreader? It is a BIG weak point to make a larger profit. The gears may hold up better on golf courses, ball parks and the like on smooth well groomed level landscapes which don't stress the gears, but but that in a sloped rough terrain landscape and you will see the faults and have an issue sooner rather than later. UPGRADE the gears, fix the open/close lever, provide a higher quality agitator, a stronger spreader gauge system, and make the grate tool-less and you'll be closer to manufacturing a spreader worth it's asking price.

I was lucky enough to find one of these on Facebook Market Place. The asking price was $175.00. I noticed from the pictures it was missing a few things. However, I like to tinker, so it wasn’t a deal breaker.
After pointing out that it was missing the agitator pin, gear housing half’s, wheel bushing, screen, rain cap, calibration key and a dis functional deflector shield, I was able to talk him down to $100.00.
I loaded it up faster than a jackrabbit on a date and called Anderson immediately. I spoke with Jennifer who was more than helpful ( ext. 303 ) 10 minutes and $57.00 later ( shipping included ), the parts were on their way. The faulty deflector turned out to be an improperly installed spring.
Can’t wait to make some cash with this work of art.
I see some people have trouble with gear slip. The instruction manual says to keep the gears properly adjusted using the gear collar.
    We’ll see how it goes.

It's NOT the perfect spreader. ( I have 6 of them). Being in the Lawn Fertilizing Service for 35 years it's good BUT it could be better IF Andersons stopped using those gears which become sloppy, skip & pop & slip through regular usage. The Andersons Spreader (Now Made for Andersons by farm manufacture EarthWay) have yet to replace those awful gears with metal enclosed gears. (just because they have covers over them does NOT make them totally enclosed). I don't like the Lesco ones but at least their gears are totally enclosed and never slip. Spyker spreaders do have totally enclosed metal gears and they have a new line which I am going to try once they get their side deflector made for it. It will no doubt be a great spreader for a home owner like your self however. ( I mean no offense here, I just cringed when i saw your video and think about all the trouble I've had with Anderson Spreaders)

Very interesting info. I can't say I owned 6 of them by any stretch so I will take your word for it. Good points about the metal gears though, not sure why no one use them, I guess it must be cost. I think the big point about the SR2000 is it's accuracy. I don't think another spreader has as exact of a spread pattern due to their cone delivery patent.

Your 100% right on the gear slippage(thought I was the only one who experienced it) hopefully the change that very soon. aside from that issue the two sr-2000's I own are awesome, awesome adjustable spread pattern (Helicone system) and the side shield for going along sidewalks and paved areas the sr-2000 is my spreader of choice for our lawn care company.

Just like a Mercedes Benz. You buy it new for $1200 and you can't sell it for no more than 10% of that price. $1200? Where's the motor? A Honda mower brand new can be had for $400. A Honda mower has a motor that had to be engineered to do what it does. A Honda mower also has a transmission just like a spreader but it can be had with the motor and blade to cut your lawn for $400? Everything about a Honda mower is metal where it needs to be. Cheaply engineered linkages and cables that you find on a spreader is robust on a mower. Why is any spreader over $200 without any kind of motor?????? Either spreader manufacturers don't know how to source for their parts or they are just ripping off consumers. And "Made in USA" ain't getting it if you have to rip off your customers to be in business. I don't get it!

I know people love those but I don't see how you can get even results when you have to turn around with a large radius and in my yard which has lots of beds and turns I couldn't get it right. It takes me some time with these but I never end up with fertilizer stripes and it's easy. I really love the Andersons unit, their patented cone makes a huge difference. At first I thought it was fake but so many landscapers and golf courses use these and they can't all be wrong.

The thing is fantastic. With cheap spreaders I always ended up with lines and uneven amounts. This thing seems to never have that issue and pros say it's the most accurate spreader there is. You will be very happy. Earthway owns this spreader now and they still make it the same but if you need parts you will need to call them. They ship direct and were great to deal with.

@@SilverCymbal i think that adjustment you are talking about is to control distance thrown (thrown further out makes a wider spread?) thats why they number it, so that you can still retain control of how much product/1000sqft it makes it measurable, but means that the spreader is still useful in tight spaces?

Not at all, I owned the Lesco and it's not as precise. The difference is the cone dispersement thats patented.
