      I love Shannon Sharpe and respect him dearly.
      But he is wrong.
      Let's look at this in the big picture.
      Remember when people were working in terrible conditions without protection in coal and asbestos mines?
      They got black lung and asbestos-related disease.
      Obviously they had the same mentality like football players. This was maybe the only way they could provide for their families.
      But the job was terribly dangerous.
      We have of course improved working conditions and technologies in that regard so that the people working there are not unnecessarily exposed to hazardous elements. It is not worth it.
      One might look at a Ray Lewis or Shannon Sharpe and see that they have made millions of dollars in earnings and with average saving skills, are set for life.
      But think about the thousands of kids and young men who don't make it into the NFL and with all the head blows and concussions incurred from youth up, will suffer debilitating effects later on with little or nothing to show for it. Think about how much suffering this has on their families and community. This is one of the causes of marital violence, drug abuse and crime.
      Is the human suffering worth it?
      Is football in it's current form worth it?
      We are better than this as a society. We need not expose our young men to unnecessary dangers like gladiators for a buck, for the entertainment of crowds and for the rich owners and TV executives.

    • @andrewhagan8885
      @andrewhagan8885 7 років тому +3

      People go through stress and depression everyday trying to pay their debts that are just as or just about as dangerous as playing football on the body and mind. Football players get paid millions doing what they love almost stress free so almost everyone would do that if they could to make a better life for themselves and their families.

    • @southernapeman8737
      @southernapeman8737 7 років тому

      Andrew Hagan
      I feel you didn't really understand what I wrote.
      Of the millions ( *the NCAA estimated there were around 1.1 million high school football players and nearly 70,000 college football players in the United States in 2012* ) that play football from elementary school till the pros, how many get to have a career making millions of dollars?
      Now how many of these get repeated head blows, therefore risking Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)?
      Is the price work it?
      I am not saying the fault is at the level of an individual.
      As I wrote above, people will do anything to have a better life for themselves and their loved ones.
      This game at least needs to change. It's unsafe. It's unnecessary. It ultimately enriches the owners, the media, the sport's apparel companies and NCAA.
      Please watch the movie Concussion if you have not seen it yet.

      Alot of fire fighters are suffering from uncontrolable rage do to damage to thier brains. Some are punching thier wives in the face because of brain damage. I bet if you would have asked them before they signed up, they would not have listed that as a risk of the job. We need and salute fire fighters but need to do a better job at protecting them. I highly reccomend a SPECT Scan or functional scans to adress brain health, same for police officers and other high risk jobs.

    • @omarmahmood5011

      Eazy DuzIT That is a really ignorant way to look at it. Have you played in the nfl?, do you know how it feels to get blows to the head play after play?, no exactly. Players suffer great consequence from playing football and it had nothing to do with playing soft etc. It is simply the game of football itself. It's a dangerous sport and people are now discovering how playing it can have detrimental consequences. The NFL all around is very corrupt anyway, players have a lot of other problems other than CTE.

    This is why I love football. I wasn't born with super athlete football skills but if I was I would think the same way. There is more to football than just tackling. It's a sport of friendship, cohesiveness, and coming together. No superbowl winner has won without having 53 of 53 possible players buying into their system and doing whatever they can to win. Jamal feels thankful to have this opportunity to play in the NFL (although he didnt get there by luck; he is a fantastic player) and these comments show he doesnt want to waste it.

CTE can affect a person that's played HS football let alone college and beyond (which is the path a lot of professional football players take). This is a very physical game that takes a heavy toll on players bodies which is why one of the demands for the new CBA is free healthcare for life.

    Ive come to this conclusion on CTE. As long as you know the risks of playing football, and are willing to keep playing for the love of the sport, if something happens to you dont blame it on the NFL. The facts are out now and you are well aware of the risks that go with it. Just like any other dangerous job you take on. You like what you do and the money that comes with it, except the risks that go with it. No one now can say that didn't know about CTE.

  • @Kevin-jd4dc

    I think what maybe Shannon doesn't realize is that he's not really in a position to say whether he would make the same decision. Effects of CTE are late onset. When your not able to remember your name, or do basic activities, or remember your loved ones you might feel differently about the decision to play football. Other aspects of football, like breaking a leg, torn ligaments..those are immediate consequences that you can 1. be fixed typically, and 2. you can prepare better for in the future. But CTE isn't. Everytime you take a hit your contributing to your risk of CTE when you might not even know it. And you don't have a way to protect yourself from it moving forward, there's not specific exercises you can do to strengthen muscles to protect against it for example. Or different techniques...Playing football is the risk. Also there's currently 0 treatment. So once you have it's not going away. I also hope Shannon doesn't think that he had to play football to be successful. He's incredibly smart and thoughtful and could have done many other things. I also hope really hope he doesn't have CTE and that treatments do become available. Also the whole thing about chance...very few things create a 100% chance of something happening, there's always variation. But, I think the data is pretty clear on the massive risk of CTE from football. Would I stab myself in the head with a knife for 20 millions dollars knowing that it will greatly increase my risk of dying and debilitating mental disease knowing that if I didn't there's perhaps still a small chance I could get something like dementia?

    People go through stress and depression everyday trying to pay their debts that are just as or just about as dangerous as playing football on the body and mind. Football players get paid millions doing what they love almost stress free so almost everyone would do that if they could to make a better life for themselves and their families.

    I do not know much about organized football. My father would not let me play it so I took up soccer. I know some soccer players have CTE and maybe that fate will get me. But I do know how to make soccer safer and that is the reason for this post. Besides being a NCAA D1 player I was a coach - 40 years ago. And I played 10 years after college in various leagues. Now I would not have a team practice heading. Soccer should get rid of goal kicks, corner kicks, and goalie punts, where a ball travelling at a high rate of speed is headed. Maybe get rid of heading entirely like they do with kids. What can they do with football? Flag football for kids? Less contact in practice? When there is a legitimate test for CTE in the living they we have some decisions to make. I think it is going to be more common than we realize.
