TIPS AND FAQ: Bonus Tip: Hit up your local hardware store that cuts wood and ask if you can fill up a bucket with sawdust. My local just ended up giving me a huge bag that hardly fit in my car. Enough for a life time or to start a small business. Bonus Bonus Tip: In order to avoid the awkwardness when they ask "what for?" say it's for "Hobby stuff, like model trains", everyone knows a weird guy who collects model trains. FAQ: When I mention quality paints, I'm referring to 'artist quality' paints (as opposed to 'student quality' paints). You want strong pigments and fast drying times if you want your flock to dry fast. Some paints are designed to dry slowly, some are designed to dry quickly. Do a quick google search and find out what paints are avalible to you and their drying times. I'm using Jo Sonja paints because they're fast drying and have strong pigments at about $6 a pop. Winsor and Newton paints have strong pigments and are designed to dry slowly. You can use house paint as well - generally strong pigments and fast drying. You can buy house paint in sample pot sizes, and while it's more expensive upfront, you'll get more bang for your buck long term.
I went to a Lowes and asked for some saw dust, even offered to scoop it off the floor because it was everywhere, when the guy called his manager over to ask she acted like I wanted to steal something lol Drove across the street to home depot and got more than I could ever use and they wanted to give me more.
What I absolutely LOVE about your videos (besides your amazing skills and even better creativity) is this little "philosophical" touch you add to them. Its really mind-opening (at least for me) and motivating.
Can this be done with acryllic paints? It sort of looked like you used oil paints, which i sadly dont own any of. Im really new to this sort of stuff, so i might be a stupid question :) Thanks in advance :D
Great stuff I have found ink and methylated sprites drys really fast for homemade flock and looks really vibrant, also if you make blue/yellow/red ect and sprinkle on static flock you can make great wild flowers.
I have done this for a while now. Its so easy and the after an afternoon I can have an insane amount of tubs with every colour and scale imaginable. Also, I use cheap paints and if I need to I even water it down. I also do a little woodwork so I use the shavings from that. It looks great!
Some ideas for future videos: - a wizard's tower - autumn trees - alien landscape with crystals/weird plants - mushroom forest - a small village with 2-3 different houses and a well or something
Found you the other day and immediately watched all your videos! Excellent stuff! I'm not sure if you still take video requests but I'd love to see some Tau terrain if you are!
Real cool... im guilty of buying cheap myself but i really enjoy seeing your methods as much as you message.. "go with the flow!... youll make better next time."
Your video just gave me the confidence to make my own as I can see how easy it really is. And thank you for just getting straight to the point. You have no idea how much I appreciate that haha
Ok, a "how to," an explanation of "the reason why," a bit of "philosophy," some "inspiration" and over the top, high-quality production in less than 3 minutes? Yeah, this video is perfection!
That last line is such great advice! "If you can't replicate it, so what, you'll make something better." Great video and thanks for the advice. I'm just getting into the hobby, thanks for the content :)!
Thank you. Since watching your video I’ve really had fun making my own flock. I was so uptight before trying to get it just right. So stressful but now it’s really just fun.
I was about to throw out a lot of old herbal tea bags of different kinds and put them on our compost pile. When I tore the bags open I realised that they were not to be thrown away. All different textures and earthy colours. I used them 'as is', just gluing them down. No need to paint them. I dabbed chalk powder in places for more light/shadow.
Well, considering there's a carpenter workshop in my neighborhood with, I'm guessing, an almost unending supply of sawdust, there's no reason not to try this.
How there. I wonder if you can help me. I came across your video because flocking kits were a bit expensive here in UK. I have a pair of black flock boots which were quite expensive and still fairly new. They are supposed to be faux suede. I spilled something on the toe of one so I sponged it with a damp cloth and now the toe is bald of flock. Will your method work if I seive it several times and what should I use to stick it on with please? Many thanks in anticipation, Brenda
Loved your video. And it looks like I’m not the only one- I had to read all the way to the end of the comments to find a single negative one. Thanks for the great flock advice- I have never used it before, but now you’ve got me eager to try making my own. Have a great weekend !
I'm a smoker (never start it's not good) but I used my ash from my smokes mixed with glue to make some stone from a volcano it's not bad I had no black paint but plenty of black ash from my smokes (again never start smoking it's not a good idea ) but if you already smoke there's an idea really you could use ash From a camp fire pit
Muy buen vídeo. Que chulada lo que se consigue. Que buena idea lo de rallar lo s corchos. Gracias Por cierto, no tienes un vídeo de cómo has echo la mesa y con qué materiales donde pones el césped en este vídeo?
Your spirit is consistently inspiring. Like I love your creations, but I think the reason your chanel is so good, is the fact that you show how you enjoy the process, how you embrace your creativity, and how you take what could be seen as mistake, as a way to progress or as "happy accidents". I love your videos, man.
Haha, trust me, this was the hardest part for me too, I used up all my resources first, my own saw dust, my dads saw dust, my friends saw dust before I had to bite the bullet. So I picked a day when the store is a bit more quiet and just asked the friendliest looking person closest to the wood cutting section not doing to much. The guy I talked at the hardware store was really excited to help out and any anxiousness I had washed way. The worst they can say is no.
And here I thought I had "invented" the idea of making flock with sawdust. Seriously though, I find that using alcohol-based wood dyes make for quick color that isn't "wet" from the beginning.
Thanks for this... I need some flock and after a recent session cutting some bases I have some sawdust... nice. (PS, I like your artistic sub-conscious represention of the UK, Ireland and Iceland with your flock at 2:50 😉😈)
I make fantasy terrain, if anyone ever questioned my grass blending choices the answer would be "Magic". I prefer the ascetic of custom blends over standard purchased colors I can find. The local hobby shops only sell Earth Blend and a green blend with yellow flecks in it anyway, much cheaper just to make my own than order Woodland Scenics and much more fun.
WOW THAT WILL BE SOOOOO good to use i have never used flock and now that i now how cool it looks then cool, i well use the dark side of the flock master
Got a huge bag of "flour" sawdust from a kitchen manufacturer. Because it's effectively sanded dust it's super fine and works perfect for n-scale. Such an easy way to make loads of ground cover with endless colour combinations.
I just wish you had more videos! I love the way you shot and edited this. There are very few if any tutorial videos that I watch multiple times. And no other tutorial video that I have ever enjoyed rewatching as much as this. Pure gold! Keep it up and keep making content!

Miscast Terrain I did the same. Didn’t quite get that much but most places will just give you the dust
"what for? well i gotta feed the slaves in my basement *something*"
The 'What for' question is answered with, "My kid has a school project, we are going to use it to build ."

Would this work at Lowes?
That apron gives at least 10 points for credibility
hahahaah thanks!
As always simple, clean and clear brother. Good work 😃
"If you can't replicate, you will make it better next time" Amazing Learn!
Thanks mate!

Thank you for the kind words, that really means a lot
I was gonna say the same thing!
Agreed
After 40 years as a Model Train and wargamer, this is the first video that actually makes me contemplate making my own flock rather than buying it.
What's it like being a "Model Train"?
@@johnmcgahern3946 If anything I bet when it comes to projects he always "stays on track" 😄

Still have yet to make my own flock. Great vid!! Enjoy your process and editing man.
I hope you give it a go, let me know if you do! Thanks a lot :D
Can we get a look at the finished table you are working on in the end of the video?
Keep it up
I was hoping someone would ask! 100% yes, stay tuned, I'll be covering how I made it.
@@Miscast cant wait 👍

Aw thank you mate!
no, thank you for doing it.
Great stuff I have found ink and methylated sprites drys really fast for homemade flock and looks really vibrant, also if you make blue/yellow/red ect and sprinkle on static flock you can make great wild flowers.
This changed everything for me. I'm annoyed with myself for not finding this video 4 years ago when you posted it. Thank you!
Just the mentality of "so what, you will make something better." is a huge statement about how you view the creative process. I love it.
The sifter taped to the bottom of the cup is freaking genius!

Really helpful as I've been spending lots on flock!

Sorry to bother you Miscast; Did you use acrylic paint or oil? If i see a tube i automaticaly though that was oil, but i had to ask :D.
Acrylic :)

That's great to hear! No problem :D
awesome video, someone shared this on reddit & i'm glad to find your channel!
Thanks for letting me know! Welcome :D
What tyoe of paint can i use?
As a beginner. I love the concept of being able to make decent flocking out of something like sawdust
Excellent - been holding off flock making thinking I needed a blender. This technique is for me - cheers.

Best flock video I've seen in a long time
Thank you. Since watching your video I’ve really had fun making my own flock. I was so uptight before trying to get it just right. So stressful but now it’s really just fun.
just filled a 5gal bucket with sawdust powder.............. cant wait to make me some flock...........
thank you!!!
Not sure if you still check this or not, but I figured I would ask. What kind of paint are you using? Acrylic?
Game changing video sir thank you so much nothing is left in my mind about flocks😍😍😍
I knew this channel was chaos propaganda. Bring the flammer, Sextus, the heavy one!
I know this vid is a year old but thanks for the tip. There's a old saw mill near me wherevi can get buckets of sawdust for next to nothing or free.
When I try this method it just turns to big clumpy nuggets. Like rabbit droppings or something.. Is my paint wrong? Or my sawdust? xD

Trying to make a small wall covered in green ivy( 5x5 inches) any suggestions on what material would be ideal to using the grater method? Thanks
Would this flocking be fine enough for a velvet-y texture, like a suede-tex?

PVA Glue to glue the flock down
Tutorial for the table coming soon :)
Hopefully that answers your question, you never know with google translate haha!
Miscast Terrain yes, thank you. I will wait. Regards. But, i was referring to the material for the tablet.
Is this the same as DYNAFLOCK FIBER POWER
My acrylic paints make the sawdust stick together in chunks! :( any tips for that?
That cork flock looks perfect for making cherryblossom trees! Thanks for a great video.
I don’t understand what exactly you use I see cups and paint what’s that light brown thing you mixed with the paint

Подскажите кто-нибудь, пожалуйста.

Someone any other ideas besides the wood and cork on what could be used aswell? :)
My dad thought i was cooking some weed brownies 😂😂
Can i use a dehumifider instead? Would it work since were looking to get rid of himidity?

What was the second ingredient that you used at the start of the video? Water?
Ps. Love the video. Great idea
I tried and its just so easy and interesting. I had a hard time creating not so vibrant color
Wow, impressive, looks simple and effective, have to try it!

Great video! I always struggle with getting the same colors for my flocking. It never occurred to me to just embrace it. Great work!
This is one of the BEST video in de UA-cam.

Does the flock last a long time if not used straight away

The video: 3 minutes

4 years late to the party, but making 4 parts green, 2 parts red, and 1 part yellow, gives a nice colour to the grass/flock.
I don't have fuckin saw dust tho
Only problem is where do you get sawdust? People don't just sell it.
Any your local hardware store that cuts wood, they throw it away, or just ask anyone you know with powertools!
The question is....why ?????
Why not ?
Woodland scenics employee detected
what material do you use to make flock ?
You mentioned you would put your flocking in the oven on the lowest temp until dry, with the small batches you make, how long does it take to dry?
A few minutes
Brand new to terrain building and was godsmacked when I saw the price of the green grass looking stuff in my local hobby shop
Fantastic! There are different sawdust’s out there. Is pine ok to use?
Yes, absolutely
I am loving your UA-cam
